DoveTail Games: Vague, But Hopeful, Details on the Next Flight Simulator

Featured Replies

I'm all for the different flight sim iterations being developed!  Whether it's P3D, DTG, Xplane, or these guys...

Nice pics anyways!

Hopefully one of these flight sims will fit our needs!

Don't forget Aerofly!....... I think they do some nice work!

And this is just the Ipad version.

We are all connected..... To each other, biologically...... To the Earth, chemically...... To the rest of the Universe atomically.

No worries, I do recall the autumn of 1997 when I must have called every software store in the city asking 'Do you have the new Flight Simulator 98???'I must have drove people crazy. I am older now an

Dont put your money on this. Their fatal flaw is that they are using and spending time and money on Unigine 2. Unfortunately, without the technical expertise, they didnt realize that the Unigine engine generates on flat plane only. It cannot do a round earth simulation. So the current flight demos that Unigine has developed, not these nexgen guys, can only map 262x262km at a single time. Then you have to unload and reload a new simulation. So maybe ok to fly some small planes around in, but say goodbye to jets.

Let me guess.... you want 64bit.

HiFlyer, when you say...Current sim scenery is pretty much etched in stone without skill in the use of very specialized tools, and even then the option for real change is severely limited....

I'm a bit confused with that statement. Just have a look at what the freeware & payware guys have done with add-on scenery. Bill Lyons with his 'Golden Wings', &, even here in South Africa, we have the freeware Aeroworx guys changing our scenery for us, in FS9 & FSX. So, real change is NOT limited at all. Oh, from http://www.ford-tri-motor.net/ comes an airport within a mountain!

But on the feature list, they write:

"Round Earth model – enabling “Polar Operations” (90° N to 90° S) preferably in a WGS84-EGM96 standard with an elevation model from -40.000 ft (mariana trench) to +30.000 (Mt. Everest)"

Is it actually being developed by UNIGINE Corp or is this group of individuals http://www.avsim.com/topic/468499-next-generation-flight-simulator-sim-posium-is-now-open/

I think we might be talking about different things. For instance, say you want to add a missing lake to FSX: what's the process, and what are the steps? Say you want to add a missing highway, how long does that take? Say you would like to add a missing airstrip, or add the missing park along the edge of a river, or that the pre made grid-pattern of the sim is totally incorrect, and you would like to recreate the real street layout for a given area, such as New York city: What do you do?

Essentially, you pull out a series of specialized tools, and even then, without getting into quite a bit of depth you can only change the scenery so far without essentially creating something new from scratch. Orbx primarily doesn't bother trying to alter current fsx scenery, it creates new scenery. Aerosoft creates a type of cutout and simply places it over the existing scenery, and then blends a bit at the joins. It's not a particularly organic process.

Contrast that with the area construction in something like Cities: Skylines. Raising and lowering the level of the land, placing lakes and rivers at will, moving buildings and roads with a few simple clicks, then think what individual users could do in a sim. Think of the explosion of creativity.

Not all that long ago, I tasked myself with making FSX Hawaii a bit more interesting, and using a specialized tool, began the job. Eventually, I stopped, because it was taking forever, and given the nature of the sim and tools, I would have to go into way too much depth to make a real difference. Later, I added Aerosofts New York (and a few other cities) to X-plane 10, but again, while I succeeded, I found the tools convoluted and clumsy. Because of that, I think the vast majority of users probably never get involved in any concerted way in scenery design, as it's simply not an inviting process in our current sims.

DTG on the other hand, added tools directly into trainsim to encourage users to dig into the design process and it works well. It would not go amiss to see similar easy to use and intuitive tools in whatever new flightsim offering they come up with, but using "Microsoft Flight technology" how far can they go?

I hear you. Thanks. A few years ago, we decided to download photoscenery from one of the map servers out there. What a mission... with odd coloured tiles, remapping of coastlines etc. We gave it up!!

Tileproxy?

Tileproxy it was. Geez, took ages to download, tiles were a bit mismatched & we decided that it was taking up far too much space. We wanted to do the Western Cape, here in South Africa. Far too many coastlines that had to be sorted out!

Thats their ambition, but the Unigine engine doesnt support it.

Its the latter. Unigine is not developing the sim directly.

Yes. Before the former iteration of the NGFS was shut down (restructured?) this new initiative of theirs, in cooperation with an unnamed partner was broadly discussed.

They are calling themselves NGIS now... Next Generation Interactive Software.

Basically this what UNiGiNE  states about their engine that interest me.

https://unigine.com/en/products/engine/unbounded-world

Exciting times for the flight sim world!  Whether it be DTG or P3D or whoever, I'm looking forward to the one that can run on our modern computer systems.

Are UNiGiNE putting any resources into NGIS?

I think NGIS developing their sim around the UNiGiNE 2 engine.  Don't think UNiGiNE is directly involved. See no reference to NGIS on their site.

I occasionally check their forums on the old NGFS site for info before the change, but the new site the forums are not active yet.
