FlyTampa Airports in P3D - The Glitch

Featured Replies

I own KBOS, KBUF, KMDW and KTPA and with the exception of KTPA, the others are only for FSX.   I however own the migration tool and have used it to install all of FlyTampa's airports successfully but there is a little glitch I wonder if anyone else has encountered and found a way to fix it.   Given those airports are rather old, it is understandable that they would wig out in the P3D environment but I want to know if anyone has solved the mystery of "The Taxi Lights of Many".

Basically, when taxing around the airport, either after having landed or getting ready to depart, the object they use for their taxi lights will appear all over the screen, in the air, on the ground, dozens and dozens of them, flying around like angry gnats.   Then they'll suddenly vanish and all will be normal for a moment.  Taxi a little bit more and then BUZZZZzzZZz.. .Taxi lights all over the place again.

It makes me wonder if these 100+ extra taxi lights are what is causing a drain on the VAS and hitting the FPS slightly.    It happens every single flight, day or night, that begins or ends at KBOS, KBUF or KMDW.   Anyone know what is causing this anomaly in P3D on these FSX airports?   Any fix for it?

BEHOLD!   The invasion of the FlyTampa taxi light monsters!  RAR!

I think this may be a common problem for some sceneries that are designed for FSX but installed in P3D. I checked a website that I have bookmarked for a group that has done some fixes for this but I did not see any FT airports listed.

Have you asked FlyTampa to see if they have a solution?

I looked over their forums and saw nothing even mentioned about this problem and also noticed it takes them an exceeding long time to reply to threads sometimes, especially on older airports, so I came to the largest community of simulatorheads, AVSIM.       I am aware it's a FSX to P3D problem I am just wondering what would cause this problem?   DX9 models making DX11 code freak out or vice versa?   FlyTampa secretly hates P3D and put in malicious code to attack airplanes with thousands of taxi lights?    It's just odd and my computer literate brain can't figure out what would be causing this.  Even the great GOOGLE comes up with no real discussions of this problem.   The bulldog in me has latched on to this problem and wants to know why/how and find a solution for everyone.

Brian,

Here's a link to a group that has tackled this problem with mostly European airports. It's in German so be sure you have a translator plug in for your browser. Maybe they can give you some idea on a fix.

I have had this issue as well! My other issue is with their KBOS scenery in that the runway lights will turn off and stay off... not very good on final approach! They don't seem to have an answer to that one!

I tried to install an Aerosoft scenery for Toulouse that is P3Dv1 compatible. Same issue with the runway lights. There weren't any. Other than the site I posted the link to, I don't know of any other work arounds. We'll just have to wait for scenery that is designed for this sim and current version.

Brian - of all the FT airports you mention I only have KTPA. But I don't have that problem with any FT airports, KTPA or otherwise.

I wonder if it has something to do with the fact that you're using migration tool. If the installers for the older airports are anything like the newer ones (and/or KTPA), they will tell you that they can't find FSX (since you're using P3D) but they'll at least give you the option to browse to your flightsim directory. Try that instead and don't use migration tool.

Do your best to delete all of the prior attempts (I'm afraid migration tool could've tossed some FT files in who-knows-where) and then reinstal. Also, if you're using AI traffic (I see some in your screenshot), be sure to disable any and every AFCAD that could be in conflict with your FT airports.

If none of that works, try uninstalling GSX since I think GSX also adds either AFCAD or some other sort of airport data so that the vehicles can navigate around.

Aside from some z-fighting amongst some of the trees, jetways, and other objects, KTPA works great in P3Dv2. Amazing how timeless FT's design methods have proven to be... and impervious to P3D changes...

The FlyTampa guys say it has to do with AI traffic being turned on within P3D so you have to either turn off AI traffic or there are a couple of 3D edge light files you can delete.  I left things as they are as it only happens once in a while....for me at least!

I'm not sure that was the same issue. Brian's looks a little different.

Regardless, that exact issue arose from the use of specific types of AI. I can confirm that there are no problems at either KTPA or LOWW (the airport referenced in that thread) with MyTraffic.

I'll take a look at some of these possible solutions you mentioned above.   FT airports are wonderful airports and they run good on my setup.   People above think I have a problem with the runway lights not appearing.  That is incorrect.  My airport night lighting is just fine.  The problem is the random assault by hundreds of Taxi Light 3D objects swarming my airplane as I taxi around.   It is the oddest behavior I have ever seen in P3D.   I ran the Simple Airport Scanner tool and it only found one conflict which was in fact KBUF.   The UTX 2.0 USA airport elevation correction layer had created the new AFCAD.   That might explain KBUF (which is where the screen shot is from) but does not explain KMDW or KBOS.   KTPA is not a problem because KTPA is the ONLY FT airport that has a native P3D installer.    If I recall, FT once it does not detect FSX does not give you the option to continue the installation.   I know some add-ons do that.    I may be mistaken.  I'll give it a shot and install manually.   I design airports myself and it shouldn't be all that complicated really either through manual or Migration tool.    You basically have a Scenery and Texture folder for the main airport and for AI traffic you stuff a BGL file in the World Scenery folder.  IF you have any special FX you need for your airport it goes in the Effects folder.   Pretty straight forward.   I don't think FT diverted from this age old installation tradition so I can't think of why the Migration tool would interfere with that but I'll give it the old Manual Install try just to be thorough.  Thanks.

Brian - Did you check out the link I posted above that references the floating lights?

I did and it matches all my symptoms.   When I sat and thought about it, the times when I don't turn AI on, I don't see the glitch.  But when AI are driving around doing their thing 'Attack of The Taxi Lights' begins and lasts for a few seconds.   Rather than FT just talking to LM about it they should probably also talk to other airport design teams and ask them about it since this problem is EXCLUSIVELY a FlyTampla airport problem with AI active.  What are other teams doing different that keeps this glitch from occurring?   This does not happen with Flightbeam, FS Dreamteam, LatinVFR, TopicSim, ImagineSim or any of the other airport companies that grace my SSD drives, only FlyTampa.   It's a minor glitch but looks tacky and unprofessional when I am doing live stream flights for my fans and suddenly get assaulted by the Taxi Light Mob Squad.  lol.

Again, this problem doesn't occur with MyTraffic. So it may very well be traffic programs that use old flight plan compilation methods...

I fail to understand how one thing has anything to do with the other.  Taxiway lights and AI traffic should be two separate entities.  So, we are constrained to flying into an airport with no AI active, so we're acting out a scene from a zombie apocalypse and everything looks correct OR we add AI to help with some good old fashion immersion and we have what Brian states as the attack of the taxilights...pretty screwed up.  I mean, is it a conflict between two developers' scenery not playing nice?
