Ask Dovetail Games about DTG Flight School & Flight Simulator

Martin

I know you answered a post regarding the sale of your sims but having read this thread http://www.avsim.com/topic/484438-why-the-windows-store-is-bad-news-for-pc-users/#entry3381716

I am a bit concerned about both your current choices of seller

So are you at least considering an option,to buy through one of the many reputable flightsim sellers as an alternative to your current choices.

Thanks

For DTG Flight School:

- will the student pilot be able to make his pre-flight inspection of the aircraft ?

- what about the end-of-day back to hangar tasks...

- debriefs ? Will the virtual instructor debrief his student pilot ?

- are written exams along the course going to happen ?

- will there be a final examination, written and flown ?

- will the first solo flight depend on the progression along the course ?

Thx!

I am just chasing up on some details for you in relation to your questions. Please stick with me.

That's an interesting point and maybe that is something Martin can provide some clarity on. Does working with the 'core FSX engine' have any inherent limitations for the development team? If so, what capability will the core FSX engine NOT allow. I think quite often people assume that working with the core engine is a specific major limitation in some way without actually understanding why they are saying it.

P3D and FSX have already managed to achieve (via addons) most if not all of Jose's wishlist in various ways over the years, so I'm not sure a programming limitation applies in this case.

Our biggest limitation is time. There are lots of things we would like to do but we also want to get the new sim out some time before 2050. This is why have been very open about how not everything we plan to do will be there day one.

t is meant to gather interest in flight simming, to make it exciting for the novices, to capture them within the simming hobby & then to lead then to the actual sim.

110% correct Sir.

One more question on the facebook page https://www.facebook.com/dtgflightschool. This was filled with contents until 18 February, but didn't receive any new entry since then. I recall this was already asked and the reply was it had to to with the German version. I certainly wouldn't mind getting additional info, maybe in German language, but don't like to be decoupled from info and even images my English/US friends can access.

To comply with the Q&A thread:

- When will German users get new facebook contents?

- Would it be possible to loop through the EN contents to the German facebook site?

Thanks and kind regards, Michael

We push all content out on FB in three languages - English, French and German. If you are viewing the page using either Facebook's French or German settings then you will see the content in that language. Everyone else sees English. Regardless, we are putting out the same content in all three languages.

In fairness we have been running a little behind with the German and French content. This is because our translators have been off for a few days. Everyone should now be up to date though.

You can switch languages on FB, this can be done on our page by using the options just below the "liked by this page" box on the far left. However, this will change your language settings for the whole of FB, not just our page.

Martin, I have to admit neither am I a registered FB user nor do I intend to become one. Despite, I got the English language content til 18 February, but nothing since then.

I think passive reading of the contents (in whatever language I don't care) should be possible even for non-FB-members as on all sites I know, shouldn't it?

That is my question..

Whichever platform you choose to use your purchases will be registered with them accordingly. This means that content for one platform will not work or transfer to another.

Think of it like this, you have game A for your iphone, you can't use that same game on your Android phone. Likewise if you have game A for your Xbox One you can't use it on your PS4.

This is because there are a few key differences between Steam and the Windows Store, including the big one - DRM

That makes sense then Michael. We introduced German and French versions of our content around the 18th. This is done with FB's internal language filter. Because you are not logged in FB does not know what language to show you. Therefore you are not seeing any of the more recent content.

Martin,

So basically our first addon purchase locks us into a particular software eco system if we want to use all our addons in the same session, I don't fancy Windows store's chances in this fight to be honest.

But what about 3rd party content from the traditional web stores, will this be possible ?

Will there even be content from sources other than Steam or Windows store ?

Would it be possible to show new content to everybody on FaceBook rather than just members?

I'm not a facebook fan. Constant nags "do you know x?" and "Danny likes cream sofa's" are not my scene.

I have covered third parties in various other posts Glynn so please see them for all of the details. Long story short, we are working with a range of third party developers and the exact details of how the infrastructure around this will work is yet to be decided.

Sorry but that is not the way FB works. You can also find us here though:

Hi Martin,

I have a problem with your answer.

We are not comparing operating systems here, we are comparing distribution outlets for a game, so, a comparison between 2x on-line stores will be more applicable?

Another concern is that will there be the exact same content available from the two outlets you will be using?

It will be a pity if developers choose one outlet over another, or will it be a condition that all content will be available from both?

That brings us to freeware. As you said, the distribution 'platforms' are different how will this impact the freeware guys? Or will all additional content be vetted by DTG?

Perhaps you can clarify more on this a bit further, but some of your responses over the last couple of pages have left me feeling somewhat less enthusiastic about the upcoming simulator.

You say that we will only be able to buy through 2 stores both of which are incompatable with the other. And have as yet, not said anything regarding freeware development and sdk to general public.

Here is a scenario based on what you have suggested is going to happen

I buy DTG flight simulator from Steam and hopefully study level aircraft from them also.

I want to fly in a particular part of the world using high detail level scenery available only on the windows store.

My question is this how is that going to work?As you have said that it is not compatable

Are we heading towards the scenario of a DTG windows version and a DTG Steam version?

And neither will work together in harmony

If the idea is to have 100% content available on both stores then thats fine as this then becomes the individuals choice, but what are the plans regarding freeware development and that distribution

Thanks

Pete Little

will it be CPU dependent or GPU or Both ?

Martin, are you going to tell us something more about those scenery changes you mentioned last week/early this week? :)

That is exactly how it will work. There will be a Windows Store versions and there will be a Steam version. They are both simply a means by which to purchase the sim. Like you say, it comes does to personal choice and which method of distribution you prefer. Some people like Steam, some people like the Windows Store. It is up to each simmer to decide which one is best for them.

In terms of third party content, be it free or paid for, I have spoken about this in a number of other comments. Here is a quick recap of the main points.

Over the past 2 years, we have made our intentions clear with respect to welcoming and working with developers, both big and small, on FSX: SE. We fully intend to continue those relationships and looking forward will be welcoming both existing and new developers to the Dovetail Games Flight Simulator platform. We also recognise the passion that exists in the flight simulation community around enabling players to create user generated content. We will have more information to share on this as we get closer to the launch.

We are still developing the sim! Even when released it will take time for the infrastructure around it to settle into a pattern. Over time those patterns may change depending on what developers and simmers alike want.

- Martin

Mmmm, & all those freeware guys that have made our existing sims so immersive?

Ok, so, if distributed by Steam, I'm sure they would have their own forum.

I wonder what Microsoft will do & where their forum would be?

So, the mind boggles:

Will we have DTGFS:SE forum, a DTGFS:MS forum, the same for the Flight School?

There will be a Steam forum. Steam automatically creates one for each game. However, we are just putting the finishing touches to our own custom made forum. It has some really nice feature in it too. Once launched we will be using that forum as the main one for all Dovetail Games simulators.

- Martin

That mean that only selected few will be able to expand the simulator; No public SDK and NO Freeware.

correct ?

No, that means you will be able to buy DFS through either Steam or the Windows Store.

- Martin

no law against free speech. Well, not yet.

Anyhow, it was my speculation that caused Martin to answer that we will be locked into one of the two distributors.

Is that true?

In terms of how you can buy DFS yes, it will be available through the Windows Store and Steam. You will not be able to transfer your purchase between the two as they are two different companies. Just like if you want to return something you have bought you have to take it back to the shop where you bought it or one in the same chain of shops. You can't take it back to a completely unrelated shop as they didn't sell it to you in the first place.

- Martin

Martin, are you going to tell us something more about those scenery changes you mentioned last week/early this week? :)

Sadly not, we are still waiting on something to go through. Sorry but once we announce what it is we believe it will become clear to everyone why there was a delay.

Hey Martin,

I did think of a questions-Missions and Adventures were popular in FSX and MS Flight is this something that will be in Flight School or FFS?

Yes, DTG Flight School will include a range of missions. We haven't reached that stage of development with Flight Simulator yet but it is likely there will be some in there too. I just can't say for sure at the moment.

- Martin

will it be CPU dependent or GPU or Both ?

Martin said that DGFS will take advantage of modern CPU and GPU tech, so both.
