Funny how my simple post has gone upside down.  Could the admin of this forum either change the author to SteveW or just close the thread.  I no longer have a need or desire to participate in this thread.

Thank You.

  • No, The 4790 has 4 cores and 8 threads, that's the same as mine (although mine is weaker). If you have HT off, most would agree you should not use any AM with a 4 core processor. This is what I use at

  • This statement is totally incorrect.  There are enough threads with enough info on HT and AM that prove that using HT with a correct AM gives the best performance and with the smoothest experience...

Had me in stitches vic.

"fps gain"

If we want more fps, we can drop our LOD a notch. If we want the sim to react to changing loads we need to ensure it's running right. Lassoing other apps may also not  create the intended result.

Always use the .bat method to start addon exes, then migrate to lasso if need to and be sure it still works the same.

LOD has an effect on FPS?! I have been always under impression and I've seen it in my tests that LOD does not affect FPS, rather VAS usage.

Not as much as changing autogen density perhaps but why the defocus? I was saying that fps is not what we are looking to gain, as you say you don't see change, we want the system to support the sim to its best advantage as the loads change.

I'm currently using AM=14 with HT=OFF on my i7-6700k (4.7) and I'm relatively happy with v3.2 performance.

Meanwhile, I have read in multiple sources that i7-6700k was designed to do miracles with HT=ON. In case with P3D it comes with the price of excessive overheating (greater than 75C even with good cooling) and VAS extra-usage.  Can someone confirm this?

Yeah my 6700k hits 88c HT on only in P3D. Still safe though. But the miracles in HT seems over exaggerated.

I just spat some drink out at that rocking chair comment.

Hmmmm - I am 79 - built my first computer (IMSAI8080) from a kit and programmed it in hex using 16 rocker switches on the front panel. I have shoes more than 50 years old.

I think you will find that a majority of the 50-60 year old youngsters in this forum are more tech savvy than you would imagine.

Knew I was going to killed for that...lol. I know there are many tech savvy older simmers. In my 40's myself. Just read a lot of posts saying "I'm too old to figure this out" or "I just wanna fly and want a smooth flightsim" So was just looking out for those guys. Many are in my VA.

Actually a rocking chair sounds great although I think the nose pitching up and down would be a problem.

Hi Steve-

What's the.bat thing? I've been using PL for about 2 months and assumed that it was/is working correctly.

Point me to the .bat!

Cheers,

Mark

Hi Steve-

 Point me to the .bat!

Hey Mark, please refer to: Start an app with Affinity batch file (.bat)

Lasso is a great product but some apps need extra care if being lassoed, like P3D and FSX. Although it can work OK, it's best not to lasso an app that handles its own affinity unless we know the probable outcome. Using the .bat method for prototyping is safer than going straight to lasso is what I'm suggesting to save chasing problems.

Hi Mitch, seems cool. As I said it would be hard to see any real differences between 116 and 244. Only when in certain heavy scenery circumstances would 244 become a problem as the last core is shared by jobs four and five. Using just four should pan out as better most of the time, in more varied scenes.

Good post, but beware that FFTF can be the cause of wild effects or do very little at all depending on system. Whereas changing AMs when they all meet the criteria of a good setup is difficult to judge. Going to 238 from 85 can help if the system is running a heavy load of plug-ins, dlls specified in dll.xml, and exe's started from exe.xml, these run in the affinity of the sim. Spreading the sim out more may not be helpful with systems using lots of networking where LPs unspecified for the sim will see more use.

Irrespective of these AMs, we're talking about four cores, 8 LPs or not we've only got four cores. More cores are coming and it's a duty of software to worry about that. My antivirus scanner creates twelve jobs with HT enabled, six competing with another six, two per core on my six core, kills the system. With HT disabled there are only six, and the system works much better with only those six. Problem is, turning off HT makes that six core system slouch along a bit. I don't even think about switching HT off for that reason.

There is no correct AM, we can get close on the HT four core with 116 or 85, and we can get close on the HT six core with 340 or 1360. Understanding why 116 and 340 came about is what counts. It does not matter who 'it' works for and who it does not work for, what matters is how it works, what it does and what options we have - that's the point of these discussions, I'm perfectly happy spelling it out.

Yes..I was getting good results, but with the time and effort you made to explain to me the actual going's on with the core/jobs..I thought to add 116 and let it sit for a week or so. I certainly see no less or degradable sim performance, so what the heck..I am going to use A.M. because I only run with Hyperthreading on.  Thanks for your input, Steve. You state your reasons for what you post..and don't push it into another's face, as the forum expert-from-on-high.  You are low key, and that is class.

They can read, digest, partake, or move on.  That's the way I like to post.  Here is what I found...or not found...etc. blah, blah, etc....  :)

Cheers,

Mitch
