Something strange happened to the trim controls in Lesson 2 (UK).

Tried it the first time, didn't get it right and failed the lesson.

Tried it the second time and I had no trim control at all. Buttons '7' and '1' had no effect (tried numlock on and off).

Will try it again in a while and see if I can repeat the fault.

I set up my Saitek Pedals, CH throttle, and Logitech 3D Pro with no problems at all. I just go through the control menu, and it's the same process as FSX and P3D.

  • I've had zero problems setting up my CH Yoke and CH Pro Pedals, as well as the various buttons and rockers to my preferences, even though by default they were already working 100%.   It's just that

Maybe it's just me, but in the piper cub, you cannot select or change the left digit on the transponder while in "avionics" view. It is working while in the "front seat" view. Can anyone confirm?

Welcome to the world of Dovetail products.

  Please spare us of your helpful contributions to this discussion.

That being said, as was previously suggested in this thread, I had no problem setting up my MFG Crosswind pedals. I just assigned the toe brakes and then reversed the axis and it worked just fine. My Saitek pedals worked without this reverse step, but give it a try.

Let me guess.... you want 64bit.

Josh Daniels-Johannson

I found the controls setup a bit confusing at first (I have separate stick, pedals and throttle like Daniel above). I didn't know at first the drop-down lists would scroll so I was not finding the Axis assignment screen. A quick look at Jordan King's video sorted me out and I also applied, then modified his NVI profile. A few free flights to get my control calibration right and tuning the settings and now it's running like a champ and looks really nice overall. I'll start flying lessons tomorrow.

Positives:

  • Ground textures are really good. Very sharp and appealing
  • Aircraft modeling and textures are stellar. The worn and beaten up metal surfaces on the Cub look real!
  • 1-click install was very nice compared to the traditional FSX setup slog
  • TrackIR just worked automatically. Great that support for this was in on day one.
  • Very quick and easy to set up free flight and get in the air

Negatives:

  • Atmospheric scattering effect is way overdone. Does not look natural
  • Looks like same old FSX airport building and surface textures. Could use an update
  • The GPS skin is quite blurry. Looks a lot worse than it does in FSX actually
  • EDIT: Adding that I had to get Jordan King's NVI profile to bring visuals up to snuff, then had to tweak to fix screen tearing in full-screen mode. This should be addressed for newbie simmers to have a good out-of-box experience.

Bugs (all GPS bugs):

  • The GPS is really buggy. I crashed the sim about 4 times this evening while working with the GPS
  • The GPS screen that shows the airport layout is blank. I think I saw other blank info screens too
  • If I pop up the runway list in the airport info the popup goes outside the GPS screen and is clipped by the window!

Hello Martin

Did you guys test this with just a Keyboard and a mouse?

(This is on my laptop, it has a full keyboard with keypad.)

I have spent more than an hour trying to steer the plane!

I have tried all keyboard keys, mouse as yoke, etc. I just wont turn.

Two issues winging their way to your support crew. Thanks.

I Update and complete my Buglist here, also sent to DTG Support.

1.Controls
For me the biggest bummer was not being able to setup my controls to get it flying.
I`m not a beginner but i didn`t found the "axes" dropdown and i was overwhelmed after years of FSX absence  by the magnitude of controls... hundreds... and you need maybe 10-20? Some events aren`t even simulated.
So i needed 30 minutes to figure that out, and went flying. Then anoter 20 minutes to fine tune and some extra assignments and to elminate interfering commands that were auto-binded.
In addition the controls setup menu is confusing. Calibrate, calibrate keyboard, i still can`t figure out what this means. The name of the controller is not fully displayed, making it hard to configure the correct one.
For info: I use Logitech Extreme3DPro - Throttle was not binded and i couldn`t find axes dropdown first. Saitek Rudder Pedals -they were binded to aileron, elevator and other stuff, messing other controls up.

2. Graphics
As you may already noticed the graphics are more than outdated. Please improve this. (Aircraft is ok, but scenery/objects and sky/clouds really ugly.)In addition still same issues as FSX and derivates have, autogen popup etc.

3.Trim controls
are not fine enough to adjust. Just SLOW and FAST isn`t good enough to fine tune trim.

4. BRAKES
Brakes indication always showing in left lower corner. Tried to increase deadzone and deleted all assignments for brakes, did not disappear.

5. Radio Panel
Can only adjust last two digits most of the time. The first 3 before the dot only few times if you hit exact the "clickspot"

6. Flight Training Lessons
a)For a real beginner hard to understand. How to read airspeed, compass etc. Looks like Aviation Slang and basic understanding is supposed to be known. (My wife tried it)

b)Approach & Landing Lesson, the headings are screwed, he says 90° but it`s actually 80° and 340° vs 330°.

c)Training Lessons can`t be paused or quit during training.

7. Mouse Look and Mouse controls
Could be made better use of. See MS Flight for example. Works perfect there .

8.Cockpit Window looks like dirty, it`s kind of disturbing and doesn`t look good. (See MSFlight for better glazing efffect)

9.Shadow on glareshield of PA-18 from 2 diagonal rods look weird. They don`t match with the rods (end to end)

10. Aircraft Symbol in GPS is not matching real position and heading which make it hard to navigate.

3.Trim controls
are not fine enough to adjust. Just SLOW and FAST isn`t good enough to fine tune trim.

I found that the keyboard trim is much finer adjustment than trimming by joystick button, so I'm using both. Still not as good as FSUIPC though, where you can control trim inputs very precisely.

4. BRAKES
Brakes indication always showing in left lower corner. Tried to increase deadzone and deleted all assignments for brakes, did not disappear.

That sounds like you need to invert your brake axes

The mouse looks seems the same as FSX to me. I'd love to see something like EZCA but built-in to the sim

10. Aircraft Symbol in GPS is not matching real position and heading which make it hard to navigate.

There are 2 nav pages on the GPS, one shows correct information, the other is way off. Yes the GPS is riddled with bugs, and it crashes the sim if you mess with it.

Barry Friedman

In the VOR Navigation lesson, the instructor makes several references to an autopilot and tells you to use it, but neither default plane in the game has an autopilot!

Also, the margins in the Approach and Landing lesson, especially on finals, are way too tight. You get failed for "going too slow" even though you're only SLIGHTLY too slow, and more maddeningly still, the instructor will praise you moments later for being on speed and glideslope just before you get the fail message! At the very least, you should get a warning or two about your speed without being failed instantly. And apart from skewed headings, I reckon the RPM recommendation is slightly off too, and that 1500 or 1600 would be better than 1400.

The instructors are very "naggy" in the lessons. They need to give you more time to correct your speed or altitude, rather than constantly telling you to make the desired correction. But at the same time, either the instructors or a written script should warn you if you're on the verge of failing, and why.

The ATC and pilot voices in Free Flight sound absolutely dreadful - very robotic and not at all human.

Performance is very choppy with anti-aliasing on. It seems to be much smoother when that's turned off.

My Logitech Extreme 3D Pro seems to work perfectly with this game though. I was able to manipulate the throttle, rudder pedals and so on with no problems at all, without doing a thing to the settings!

The HDR style effect is way over the top. Have a look round the cockpit of the cub. I can't even make out the face of the outside temp gauge because it is over exposed. With that turned down both interior and exterior lighting would be improved in my opinion. Any chance that can be reduced?

+1

To tutmeister and MadDog.

Where are you guys flying from?

I was experimenting a little more with the sky graphic images last night and noticed the closer you get to the equator the brighter it got. Intensely bright.

Lighting that looks really nice in Britain and Chili looked shockingly bad in Bermuda. Flying from Miami seemed to break the sim and give yellow waterways, lime green sea and a bizarre grey sky.

Appreciate this is my sky graphics at play but it does suggest the Flight School engine changes the lighting towards the equator.

Last time I was in the cub was the check ride in the UK. Everything was badly overexposed in that.
