CLOSED: Take our survey and have your say in shaping the future of flight simulation (plus there are prizes to be won!)

Well, you guys seem to not know or realize the 'new' sim is simply an updated version of FSX. DTG has opened a topic a week ago in which they ask help for squashing the FSX bugs which makes it obviously clear this is not a totally new sim. They even said so themselves ("Dovetail Games Flight Simulator is based on an updated version of the FSX engine"). If they had build a complete new sim they would have had bugs of their own. So my guess is that the 'new' sim will have pretty much the same content as FSX. And FSX has been beta tested for 10 years already so I am not surprised DTG is beta testing 'already' too.

While that is partly true, it is 64 bit, which by all accounts listening to many talk about 64bit conversions before sounded like quite a bit of work. It really shouldn't just be a bug free FSX. That's what P3D was/is. There has to be some differentiator other than the price, licencing and distribution between P3D and DTGFS

I think the reason for the "bug squashing" exercise is because they basically want to cease active support of FSX Steam. They don't see it as being much of an earner once the new sim comes out.

Actually, JV's beta testing comment made me smile at the time I first read it. Having used Dovetail's Train Simulator for about three years it was news to me that they beta tested anything.

Yes, but 64 bit is only just a part of it all. 64 bit is a big change but the core of the sim seems to stay the same, like how it works with tiles, textures, autogen, etc. I'd like to have a sim that works more like 'next gen' games when it comes to scenery. Yes, I know a flight sim will (probably) cover the entire world and can't be compared to a very limited game, but still: I do think the real next gen sim needs a next gen engine. I really love P3D but I don't need yet another FSX spin off. I was hoping the DTG sim would be something new: that got me interested, but now I know it's 'just another FSX update' I am not that interested anymore. Specially not after watching Flight School.

I know where you're coming from to some extent, I feel the same. But we're stuck with it. It is obviously not that easy, nor cheap to create a global model sim from scratch. There is Xplane, but....it's Xplane. I tried hard with Xplane, but it was not for me.

I think the future is still bright for us pixel pilots.

O yes, certainly. I am already quite happy with all the new activity in the flight sim world during the last few years. After FSX (and MS Flight) I thought flightsims were sort of dead. But they are more alive then ever now. Good times. But well... there is still so much that needs improvement... and I am not getting younger... Everytime I see real life footage of (GA) flights I can't help thinking 'Boy, we still have a loooooooong way to go'. But until then I am a happy simmer nonetheless.  And even if the DTG sims doesn't bring me what I want it to, I of course applaud and welcome the effort!

"pixel pilots" - I like it.

If DTG Flight Simulator turns out to be nothing more than "64bit FSX", then what is the point of it? It needs to be a dramatic improvement over FSX to be worth anything at all. Sorry to be blunt, but "yet another version of FSX" is not really what the flight simulation community is looking for.

Agree, but for me there will be some value in flying into a high density airport with a complex addon on VATSIM and not have to worry about a VAS crash.

I was happy to complete a survey that could possibly help the future of Flightsim. Only issue I had was the drag and drop questions. Rather than dragging all of them over we should be able to drag only those we care about. On one of them there was over 20+ drag and drop answers. 90% of them I had no opinion on. The random way I dragged and dropped them could have a impact on the future of FS? Poor design if you ask me.

Yup.  Thought the same.    I reached a point where i couldnt be arsed and dragged random ones over in no particular order

You should have read this thread first, then you would have known that one does not have to drag and reorder all items...

...you need only drag and reorder the ones you consider important. :hi:

So rather than go and take the survey as posted by Dovetail I should have read the forums on how to take a survey? Yeah that fixes the problem of the survey itself being poorly designed.

I'm not suggesting that the survey was "well designed," as it is quite obvious that it was not.

However poorly worded the instructions for those "drag and reorder" boxes were re-written, the fact remains that only one or more items need be dragged into the right-hand box to satisfactorily "answer the question."
