GTN 650-750 update

When I switch to the world wide after swapping this file, it stays on verifying for a long time, like it has stalled. Is that normal?

Okay I just reinstalled the new GTN 750/650 1.16 and Garmin Trainer to the latest version, now when I load up the plane, the GTN units are non-functional, they are completely black.

You need to go on the GTN support forum and download 2 files that you will place in your FSX or P3D Guages folder.  This fixes the black screen issue.

No, definitely no. It means that your database is corrupted (wrong renaming, unexpected format, whatever) ot that there is simply no such file in the expected folder.

My advice is to download again.

I have to be honest here. I have updated many of my add ons, and while I love the GTN 650 and use it on every flight, this upgrade has been the most confusing thing I have done in months. I have downloaded everything at least twice, followed the install instructions, sparse as they are, to the letter and still don't have it working as before. I hardly fly in Europe anyway, so I am just going to go with the latest version which I have working fine for North America, but it will be a cold day in ( you know where) before I ever upgrade the GTN again. Even their forum seems to be a mass of confusion .

It's just best if you only use their files . In other words, do a reinstall of their software and uninstall, then reinstall the GTN trainer via Windows.

I have downloaded "their files", multiple times. As I stated, I fly in the US, so I don't really care about GTN working anywhere else, but I feel sorry for people that want to fly in Europe and install this "upgrade"....

So is everything working for you or not?

For flying in North America, it works fine.

It's been two days, but I'm pretty sure this is what happened to me.

At first, after reading all the hoopla at simforums about what was going on with upgrades, I almost was scared off from upgrading.

But.... I un-installed the trainer and installed the new one, Then I installed the new GTN750 without un-installing the old GTN 750, then I did same process with the 650. I loaded default scenario in P3D then loaded a plane with the 750. When the 750 and other instruments went hot, I got a box asking where the trainer was installed, I located the folder then box closed and the 750 went black.

I thought "Oh boy" (or something similar) shut down P3d, restarted P3d, went through process of starting plane with the 750 and the Garmin started right up.  Haven't had time to try a plane with the 650 yet, but I'm pretty sure it will work.

Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-10700F CPU @ 2.90GHz (8 cores) Hyper on, Evga RTX 3060 12 Gig, 32 GB ram, Windows 11, P3D v6, and MSFS 2020 and a couple of SSD's

Worked flawlessly for me. Even renamed my real world database and exchanged it for the US one and worked without fault.

Can someone please explain in detail the filenames so that we can fix the db issue ourselves? I would like to use a worldwide db without any restrictions for airports with runways less than 4000ft not appearing. Is that possible? I fly all around the world, and I don't want this limitation. So what files exactly do I need to change and to what filenames. I'm kind of confused from what others have said.

ASUS ROG Maximus Hero XII ▪︎ Intel i9-10900K ▪︎ NVIDIA RTX 3090 FE ▪︎ 64GB Corsair Vengeance RGB Pro ▪︎ Windows 10 Pro (21H1) ▪︎ Samsung 970 EVO Pro 1TB NVME SSD (OS Drive) ▪︎ Samsung 860 EVO 2TB SATA SSD ▪︎ Seagate 4TB SATA HDD ▪︎ Corsair RMx 850W PSU

The 4000 feet limitation is a real world limitation recently implemented by Jeppesen on their worldwide database. I think it was to manage the database size or something. I would have to go back and see in which cycle it started, so it is "real world". It doesn't apply to their regional databases.

EDIT: I just looked it up and this applied from cycle 1602

So for worldwide package we will have this limitation? And if we want to include ALL airports, we would need to get the database for every individual region and install them into the garmin trainer if we want access to all airports?

So it's either one or the other, either worldwide package that will limit airports to runways with 4000ft or more, or have regional databases which include everything.

Finally, waking up at 4 am this morning, I figured out this data base situation  In ProgramData/Garmin/GTNTrainerData/DB  there are 8 files after you install the latest GTN Trainer.  The one that causes the problems with short runways not in North America, is named 006-d0170-00.bin The file 006-d0170-30.bin  is the North America data which works fine in North America. You can switch between these two using the FS GTN Config program, but you lose the shorter runways in the worldwide version.

Now if you have the data file from the last GTNTrainer which is  AVTN_WW_DB.bin    This is the data that contains the shorter runways for the world before Garmin eliminated them in the latest version. Now all you have to do, if you have this older data base ( I had it on a backup drive, but if you haven't installed the new Free  Trainer yet, make sure you copy this and store it somewhere. )  is copy this older DB into the DB folder for the current trainer. The next step is to back up the current Worldwide database in the new DB folder, by renaming it bkup006-d0170-00.bin (just in case)

Now the last step, is to rename AVTN_WW_DB.bin to  006-d0170-00.bin.  So basically you have replaced the 006-d0170-00.bin with the AVTN_WW_DB.bin..... Data, so the GTN program can find it. You will get endless verifying if you don't rename AVTN_WW_DB.bin and you won't be able to start the GTN 650/750.

Now all you have to do is go to the GTN config and select the data base you want, either North America which will be the  new data base that you got in the update ( 006-d0170.30.bin) or the one you just now made for Worldwide .

Final check to see if you have this set up correctly.  Set world wide with your GTN Config, and then start the GTN and go to System Status / Data Base Info /Current Database in the GTN Menu, and you have selected worldwide, you should see World Wide 1504 effective 02-April-15. If you go to GTN config and switch to North America, then restart the GTN 650/750 and go to System Database current info it should say NorthAMR  1607  Effective 23-Jun-16

Hope this helps.
