How to manually add scenery/addons into P3D v4 the right way

Featured Replies

Hi

Firstly I would like to thank Oliver for the idea and implementation of this useful tool.

Being relatively new to this XML concept, I wonder if you can help?

I have successfully (I think) copied all of my personal scenery files over to my "add-on.xml" file.

My question is what do I do with the "0000-1107" folders in the main Scenery folder?

Do I have to convert them individually to XML format?

Seems like an awful lot of work.

Is there an easier way of getting round this?

Many thanks.

Hi Al,

leave the default scenery be, it is covered by the scenery.cfg file of P3D V3/V4. Otherwise, if LM is updating the scenery package in a point release, you will either miss it or have duplicates.

Only use the external configuration for what is supposed to be external - 3rd party content.

Best regards

Hello @ll,

all those who have been using the Addon Organizer for a while to change the Layer sequence of the scenery library will probably appreciate this change...

Best regards

I do appreciate it Oliver. I just installed the first Aerosoft Airport from my collection "Simware Valencia" and your tool did the job.

The only manual intervention was to place an Alt file in Scenery\World\Scenery, and remove the airport entry in the scenery config using Notepad +.

Your tool is essential, and sure saves a lot of work. Thanks again

So when I manualy adding sceney, I have to creat a "texture" section too? Or "scenery" section is enough for P3D to recognize textures too?

Now that Henrick has patched the AI Ships package for P3D v4 I have installed the full package into a folder in my Add-Ons directory.  I am using the addon manager to add them but wonder if i am doing it correctly.  I have added them as SimObjects and pointed to the SimObjects folder but there are hundreds of ships in there....will they all be added as a package?  I tried to use the package tab but could not figure it out.  This AI Ships package also has effects etc. and again i wonder if these are all being added correctly.  The file structure is as follows:

Global AI Ships

       Effects

       Images (these are non FS related)

       Route Maps (as above)

       scenery

        Simobjects

                       Animals

                       Boats

                                  All of the AI Boats

        Sounds

I set mine up in an external folder with the following sub-folders

Effects

Routes\Scenery  (This is the world folder renamed)

Simobjects \Animals

Simobjects \Boats

Sound

My code - and it works fine

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8"?>
<SimBase.Document Type="AddOnXml" version="3,3" id="add-on">
  <AddOn.Name>AI Global Ship Traffic</AddOn.Name>
  <AddOn.Description>AI Global Ship Traffic</AddOn.Description>
  <AddOn.Component>
    <Category>SimObjects</Category>
    <Path>G:\P3Dx\AI ShipTraffic\Simobjects\Boats</Path>
  </AddOn.Component>
  <AddOn.Component>
    <Category>SimObjects</Category>
    <Path>G:\P3Dx\AI ShipTraffic\Simobjects\Animals</Path>
  </AddOn.Component>
  <AddOn.Component>
    <Category>Scenery</Category>
    <Path>G:\P3Dx\AI ShipTraffic\Routes</Path>
    <Name>ShipRoutes</Name>
    <Layer>126</Layer>
  </AddOn.Component>
  <AddOn.Component>
    <Category>Effects</Category>
    <Path>G:\P3Dx\AI ShipTraffic\Effects</Path>
    <Name>ShipEffects</Name>
  </AddOn.Component>
  <AddOn.Component>
    <Category>Sound</Category>
    <Path>G:\P3Dx\AI ShipTraffic\Sound</Path>
    <Name>ShipSounds</Name>
  </AddOn.Component>
</SimBase.Document>

I have just added all of the components individually and will test.  Does it matter if I call them all SimObjects....some categories did not fit what they were.

You must specify what each component is, so Effects must be identified as Effects, Sounds as Sounds etc.  You can name the folders what you like, the critical point is what is inside them.

Thanks ,

The updated full package is not released yet, you need to install the old full package and then install the patches linked in the long AI Ships thread.

One thing that puzzles me a little...

Robert from PMDG wrote the article about only installing addons specifically for v4, and yet, I notice the PMDG747, although obviously changed for v4, still installs using the same old method, into the P3Dv4 root folder.

Isn't this something of a contradiction?

I thought so. A bit of scare mongering ? Trying to lessen the load @ support level ?

Martin from Fly Tampa posted on his forum what he thought of PMDG's stance, and he nailed it.

He wrote:

"The short answer is no and if you want to follow the "notice" as gospel I recommend you don't install anything from anyone for a quite some time.

Most airport addons are composed of files from various SDK versions, ranging as far back as FS2004 for ground polygons with seasonal features. No SDK after FS2004 supported that feature so every airport that has this, has been using that SDK for at least those particular files. This is not to say that other Models within the same Addon were not compiled with a newer SDKs. What I'm saying is that devs generally have to use a mix of SDK versions for various things. This is also in part why FSX and P3D always keep some backwards compatibility, they can never just dump backwards-compat because every new SDK lacked something.

V4 appears to have a pretty complete SDK which re-introduces important features that were lost since FSX, but at this point I very much doubt there are even a handful, if any Addons which are 100% made with the new V4 SDK.

In fact, the time when you can rest assured that an Addon is fully made using the V4 SDK, is when the Addon is no longer compatible with FSX and V3 at all, or when separate versions for those older Sims come out at a much later date, after the V4-only release.

We are moving towards P3D releases with a strong possibility that FSX and older versions of P3D will no longer be supported at all in the not so distant future."
