Will a 4K monitor kill my frame rates?

Recommended Posts

I'm about to pull the trigger on an i7 8700 with an 11gb 1080ti mostly for P3D V4. Will a 27 or 28 inch 4K monitor at 3840X2160 kill my frame rates? Should I back down to a 2560X1440?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated, as reading various reviews around the net is confusing me a bit.

With a monitor of 27"-28", I don't really think you would see much of a difference in image quality going to 4K. When you start getting into a 40"or bigger monitor, and you sit close to it, will  4K become more noticeable. Although the 1080Ti will certainly drive a 4K monitor without any problems. I run a 47" 4K with a GTX 1080 and a second 24" HD monitor with decent framerates.

Just my 2 cents.

I think you'll do just fine. The 4k with reduced need for antialiasing will look fantastic with that hardware.

I agree with @Dave_YVR, I have somewhat similar specs and I'm running a 50" 4K. Depending on scenery and other various addons the worst I've seen is about 25 FPS.

Got to agree with rickjake on this one - 4k is wasted at 27". Although your 1080 Ti should run 4k without problems, the visual difference between 4k and 2560x1440 at that screen size will be almost imperceptible from a normal viewing distance

I went from a 28inch monitor to a 32 inch 4k monitor and I could definitely see the difference. It was unbelievable.

I run a 55 inch 4k on a single 1080 (regular/standard 1080 with 11GB) under an i7-4770K at 4.5GHz, and the single video card is also pushing three 23 inch LCD monitors at the same time.  In addition to Prepared V4.1 (Dynamic Lighting On), I run a HD Stream, monitor the HD stream (web browser), chat monitor of 5 live stream services I output to, Aivlasoft Electronic Flight Bag, SPAD for my three Saitek Hardware Panels, Yoke, Dual Throttle Quadrants and Rudder Pedals, Navigraph Charts or Aerosoft Charts, Little NavMap, VPilot, and a few other minor programs.

I get 30-40fps most everywhere when running a high-end thirdparty airliner, third party airport scenery and FTX Global and Global Vector. My frames could be a lot higher, but I have VSync turned on which more or less locks them at 30fps (though it will shoot up to 40+ fps here and there).

So, I wouldn't worry about it, at all!

Best wishes.

Thanks everyone for a lot of really good thoughts. The ability to step away from high anti-aliasing and still have a sharp picture is very appealing. Perhaps in that regard, the 3840X2160 would be ideal.

Yes its small relative to most other 4k setups around here but having a sharp picture AND using less AA is what makes the difference.  I have a 1070 locked at 30 inline with 30hz and for the most part it stays there. Your 1080TI is more than capable.

1080p...

Yeah I guess what I'm trying to say is that I think it's wrong for anyone to say that there won't be a difference in clarity and quality because it's a smaller screen.

Your sitting close enough to it to see the difference.

It was an awesome experience when I first powered up the sim with the new 4k monitor.

There's no doubt you'd see a massive improvement going from a 28" 1080p monitor to a 32" 4k monitor. This is the difference:

1920x1080, 28" screen - Pixel Size: 0.322 mm, Pixel Density: 78.675 ppi

4k, 32" screen - Pixel Size: 0.184 mm, Pixel Density: 137.681 ppi

You'd probably have seen a big improvement just going to QHD at 32" - Pixel Size: 0.276 mm, Pixel Density: 91.787 ppi

I have the same equipment and I would say yes, 4k beats hard on performance. Of course it will depend on your settings, addons and tweaks. And I don't think it's worth upgrading to 4k in such a small screen, I went from Full HD 27 inches to 4k 55 inches (about the same resolution/area ratio). Now that I went from the 4770K/4.5 to the 8700K/5.0 I was even more convinced that even a "super" 1080TI is not enough for P3D v4.1 running 4k, in my current rig it's for sure the bottleneck.

I'm not a sliders all the way to the extreme right kind of guy. I always try to find a balance. I decided to go for the 28 inch 4K monitor with a 1ms response time and 60hz. I am currently awaiting the new build and I'll post my results here.
