Aren't nVidia GPUs made in Taiwan? There was also talk of a partnership with Samsung, which would be South Korea.

I am eagerly anticipating the release of new processors, however I am wondering what the performance gain would be going from my current 6700K @ 4.7 to a 9900K. Anyone care to guesstimate?

I used PassMark Single Thread Perf to compare [my] [email protected] against [email protected], except I added 100 to the 8700K's result for what I9-9900K might do at the same clockspeed, but that is just a wild guess.  So my result was I will see a 42% increase in single thread performance which will be a very respectable bump up in performance.  And then there's the other cores.   Now if my 3930K would just stop working!  I guess it's time to start ramping up the overclock but I think I will wait until parts have arrived for the new build before going down that road.  It's given me a huge number of hours over its 5.5y service life so far.

I'm curious to know when they say 9900K can hit 5.0Ghz on two cores or something like that, what happens to the clock speed on the remaining cores?  Can one set that in the BIOS or is this all managed by the BIOS w/ no user control?

Just to clarify: it is the first definition that I am using.  But yes, the other definitions are quite funny if one wishes to apply any of them.

Won't matter where nVidia builds its products, or Intel or AMD or any other tech company, the price of computing will be going up because of tariffs.  Tariffs make everything more expensive (they're the true definition of "trickle down economics" 😀 ).

One of the many "solutions", all of which will raise the cost of tech: https://www.techpowerup.com/246644/taiwan-odms-pulling-back-production-from-mainland-in-wake-of-us-import-tariffs#comments

I have to say.....I find it pretty disappointing to even see political conversation on a hardware thread.  It's strongly divisive nature in itself certainly isn't good for the community which typically has a common interest in flight sims.  I believe the "Hangar Chat" area is probably the best forum for this type of conversation if it is even appropriate there.  There are also plenty of other sites dedicated to discussing what "really matters" which are also a good forum.  Granted I am not a moderator but it is not too hard to see the negative impact going down the political road has had on this thread.

With regards to the 9900K ….it sure will be interesting to see what it will be able to do, especially paired with some of the 1100 series GPUs that are expected to come out soon.

Hope everyone has a good day.

No worries Brett I'm sure we can get right back into the 9900K now.   The entire topic began to deviate after someone brought up the idea of tariffs potentially impacting PC building costs at some point, after which I made one offhanded comment re the source of tariff policy and who it will affect most, this opinion being mirrored by 99% of economists.  Rather than let this comment die of its own accord a few folks here decided to respond w/ a personal attack or two, even though I never personally attacked anyone here, and even though they're very careful to always remain on topic, cough cough.  So yes, by all means let's get back into talking nice and safe politically sterile commentary and save reality for another place.

I plan on building my next box w/ a 9900K, air cooled, and an 1100 series GPU.   I think I will see a full 40+ increase in total performance and that is exciting since I already enjoy P3D immensely even on old hardware.

I'll add something in that regard: I don't believe the 9900k will hit 5.5GHz with standard ambient+ cooling, i.e. without a water chiller or better cooling.  5GHz and 8 cores on air or water would be good, even with a soldered IHS.  Either way, I look forward to the impending release of this part.

Yeah, I'm not confident that this thing will bring anything more to the table (p3d 4.3) than what a current properly tuned Coffee Lake already brings. With my current setup it's the GPU that is the bottle neck not the cpu.

Political comments removed per AVSIM ToS.  They are not permitted anywhere on AVSIM, hangar chat or otherwise.

On topic, I also heard reports of a Sept release for the 9900K.  Just to clarify, a 9900K even at 5.5Ghz or 5.8Ghz with a pair of 1180's is not going to provide acceptable FPS with everything maxed out in XP11 or P3D with add-ons.  But lets see what the future holds for these platform (and others), lots of good optimizations and new features in the works.

Cheers, Rob.

I suppose that depends on what you define as acceptable.  For me, 30+ FPS is desirable, but I'll even take a locked 20 if that can be maintained with settings maxed and numerous high quality add-ons installed.

I am with you on that but keep having that nagging feeling that it's not going to change much. I do hope I am way wrong. I took the time to look at that AeroFly2 thing that everyone keeps commenting on. It looks like a nice thing and some nice graphic and the Frame rate numbers look impressive. I was reading that this thing was just an iphone game sort of ported over to some flight sims. It is completely gutted of systems, AI, Weather and the a long list. Yes I guess they are playing with some of the newer engines but really come on. If you happen to be 20 or 30 Years old then maybe.... just maybe it will be the thing to fly when you retire. It takes Dev's 2 years or longer to make a single quality Plane for the current two Simulators. How long do you think it will take a few guys to go from an I-Phone do-dad to a Flight Sim. I am sticking with LM. They got pro's on the job and Money. So let's hope that the little performance in-crease and new GPUs and a little magic from LM will help us out at least some.

I can get my current 7900X @ 5Ghz with TitanXP to drop into single digit FPS with the right combination of add-ons and graphics settings, I wouldn't expect a 300% improvement (30 FPS) going from a 7900X @ 5Ghz to 9900K @ 5.8Ghz (assuming it can).  I think an optimistic increase would be around 25% provided the 9900K does overclock well.  Just have to keep chipping away at it.

Cheers, Rob.

Well Rob, that sounds pretty hopeful to a guy like me going from a 3770K @ 4.5 and a new GPU coming out soon to finally upgrade my 980TI. I have been holding out for a long time on this upgrade. It should feel as good as getting new socks at Christmas.
