What's Up With Froogle and MSFS?

Featured Replies

His entire channel centers on promoting 3rd party products. It's no surprise that he's taking the same tact as some add-on developers.

I personally think the "I'm not interested" shtick is stupid. Just say you want to wait and see but I bet you anything, off camera, he's interested.

For the sake of the hobby, everyone should be rooting for MSFS to be a proper successor to FSX. We need a boost into the current generation or things are going to continue dying.

he certainly doesn't deserve to be vilified.

Bill, don't you think you're being just a touch over sensitive here?

We need to "examine our lives"?

Pete (Froogle) runs a YT channel and has put himself out in the public sphere.  He reviews and comments on a variety of products and sims and it's not always positive from him either.  That's ok.

Why is the world becoming so oversensitive?

Is everybody's skin really this thin?

i respect your opinion but one thing  i do know and i'm sure of is that i don't need to examine anything .

Reaction seems a bit bizarre.  I wish I'd seen the video.  I like Froogle's videos and if nothing else I'm interested in his opinions, even if I might not agree with one.

Froogle's you mean?

Yeah I don't get it either.

Before Flight, MSFS was "the thing".

They had one slip up with Flight and all those people and leadership are gone.

I don't understand why one wouldn't give MS the benefit of the doubt, especially in light of the interviews and that trailer.

It has the looks and sounds of being amazing.  Why default to negative Froogle?

I still look forward to Pete’s show every week, I like to hear what he has to say for the most part, I do agree that this may be a bit short sighted but we won’t know until we know, it’s only his Opinion right?

Besides, Opinions are like @-holes, everyone has one and sometimes they’re crappy😉

I'm not trying to promote anything here, but with P3D, XP11, and Aerofly FS2 continuing development, in what respect are any of these efforts in the current generation "dying"?

FSX is dead, and the other platforms in the current generation may not be moving forward as fast as we'd like, but dying? Really?

I'm rooting for MSFS to light a fire under the butts of the other developers, but whatever happens with this new product, flight sims will continue even if the new MSFS isn't a success. And if it is, then great! But I don't see this hobby dying because the next great thing hasn't come along yet. If that were true, none of us would be taking to the air in our current sims, having fun, and talking about it here.

@Paraffin

I think he means the hobby more generally.

None of those brands/products really carry the potential of someone like Microsoft here, especially if considering their desire to bring it to  the Xbox.

Maybe "dying" is wrong, or too strong, but FS is awfully niche still and MS could change that big time with this release.

I disagree about the potential for growing the hobby. At least the traditional FS hobby that involves people interested in aviation who will continue flying in the sim, year after year. I think that has always been a niche interest in the wider world of PC "gaming," and it will remain a niche interest.

It's like car racing sim enthusiasts deep into F1 racing. Or people into military tank sims. It's technical, it's nerdy. It's not going to keep anyone interested in the long term who isn't already interested in aviation, just because it's on the new XBox Cloud service (or whatever).

MS with Flight and DTG with FSW both failed to appreciate how niche this area of interest is. The market they aimed for didn't exist. That's been proven twice now.

That doesn't mean I'm not rooting for the new MSFS to be a success because I am! But if it doesn't appeal to this niche interest, it can't be a commercial success because nobody who isn't already interested in aviation will spend more than a few hours with it.

Maybe I'll be proven wrong, and I hope I am because I'd like to see more people interested in this hobby. But it's been a fairly steady state thing for as long as I've been involved in it, and that's been since the wireframe FS days.

That's the whole point about the Xbox actually.  The potential to add people who might be more serious about it than we think has never been there before as there's really never been a "serious sim" on a console, as it's not really been technically feasible or desirable.  This niche could stand with starting to appeal to a whole new generation of prospective long term users and the Xbox is a great place to find them.

Also - let's not underestimate what it could mean for even just the PC side, having a modern, cutting edge, MSFS back in the game.  We haven't had that for like 13 years (I'm excluding Flight for many reasons)

I'm glad to hear you're rooting for them - me too

The reaction seems bizarre because Froogle's video was bizarre. I too always liked Froogle's videos and value his opinions. But this video was very different from his usual product. It contained no informative commentary at all. It added nothing to our understanding of the forthcoming MSFS. The video was nothing but infantile, pouting snark that a new flight simulator was being introduced. As someone said above, Froogle's channel spends most of its time promoting third-party developers. So he had to commiserate with their depressed psychological state.

While much better than a few years ago with 3 actively developed sims, I don't think the flight sim genre is in a healthy state. $140 aircraft (before expansions) and $30+ scenery is not indicative of a healthy or large market segment.

Triple A games are charging less for season passes and a lot less for other expansons.

Yes, if FS2020 is a success we can see a whole new stream of 'new blood' become active members in the community with new ideas and regular purchases. We may even see freeware become a big thing again.

I hope Microsoft pull it off.

Exactly!

And there's a large reservoir of potential users on Xbox that literally have never had this possibility before.

Hell there's a whole generation of gamers that don't even know what it's like to have MSFS be a "thing" beyond seeing old YouTube videos of versions from 15+ years ago.

If FSX is dead, what the heck have I been flying with just about everyday?

So there is a trend out there now to be anti-business, esp. towards the mega corporations:  Lets break them up 'cause they've become just too darn successful.  (Remember IBM back in the 80' when the government wanted to do that)    I see a hint of this attitude reflected here re: Microsoft's new venture back into flight simming.  By the way, the MS Corp. was able to rebound financially in large part via the cloud, which may play a big part of MS2020...

If there are monopolistic or anti-trust reasons to do so, yes - absolutely.
