Why sometimes both pilots have their hands on the thrust levers

Featured Replies

Since the take off is usually always being aborted by the Captain, there can't be a misunderstanding.

Btw the only situation where I can think off where both pilots are having their hands on the throttles are old multi-engined planes like the DC-3, where it can be necessary to constantly adjust MP during the takeoff run.

On four engined planes like the Dash 7 it can take quite some time until you have established the identical torque settings, but in this case the Captain usually has his hand hovering slightly above the power levers until the 'take off power set' call out.

Like I said, it depends on the company. I can call stop for 4 items (6 if I’m flying), the Capt can call stop for whatever he likes. If stop is called, the takeoff is aborted by whoever is flying (driving?).

No misunderstandings, no hand holding.

I’m not saying it’s wrong to cover the thrust levers, just that it’s not wrong not to.

Sorry to muddy the waters and add some grey to people’s black and white thinking, I know it can make people uncomfortable but “always” and “never” are big words when operating an aircraft.

Hope this helps,

Ian

Just out of interest, are you flying for an airline or are you flying biz jets?

That makes sense. I definitely wouldn't want a 250hr total Copi make a go, no-go decision.

That's....hm....interesting....

It's only when the Capt starts gently rubbing the FO's hand on the throttle that you have to begin to worry.  😱

It depends if they are an item or not ..

As long as they don't have a lover's tiff on the flight deck..

Throttle creep isn't only on older aircraft.  KingAir's have a tendency for throttle creep due to the design of the friction lock on the quadrant.  I'm not sure if Beech fixed the issue with newer aircraft...

PMDG DC3? Are you sure?  I wish they did have one. Are you referring to the PMDG DC6?
