IFR in VR is awesome!

I'm not sure why you would think you'd fail flying in VR? There's no difference except the world is drawn in 3D around you. It's still the same simunlator, same aircraft. If you can do it on a screen you can do it in VR.

If by "IFR" you mean "IMC" or using the instruments or maybe even using charts you can view in the VR world, good for you.

If by "IFR", you mean simulating real world Instrument Flight Rules using ATC and clearances, I'm skeptical.

Sticking to my cockpit, monitor, etc. so I can simulate real world Instrument Flight Rules for now.

For me its like the coolest part of this VR experience.

Each 3d virtual cockpit has its own character and mood when you are fully immersed inside.

I have 66 addon aircraft in my setup..every aircraft is a totally different visual experience and sound feel in VR.

From the gauge layout to the individually crafted stitching an textures of my cockpit seats in full stereoscopic 3d depth and convergence

And no I don't need to physically feel every button dial and switch in the cockpit or have a physical knee board I have the essential full yoke stick throttle levers and rudder pedals everything else my virtual imported screens and hands can take care of

A picture is worth a thousand words...this shows what my cockpit build once was..what it is now..and my new VR cockpit. 🙂

P.S for all the nay sayers regarding IFR, I just did a full ILS with APR approach just like I used to with my cockpit build. I used the virtual hands to turn all the knobs to set everything up..no problem. I actually prefer it because it's like I'm sitting in the actual plane so its fun to look around at all the other buttons and switches that my homebuild of course did not have. It's way more immersive and a much better training tool. After one flight with the VR 172 I feel I know the plane better than hundreds of flights with my homebuild mock up.

Ughhhh...

I hate wires.

Both inside and outside the computer.

I think I would spend about a week hiding all that.

Other that that..... Cool!

ha ha...oh ya cable management was the next thing actually...just figuring out if I want throttles or just use the virtual...or if I want to add my TPM box...rudder pedals etc.

Yuri,

Yes, the "blended." approach works well for me, as I set up Pilot2ATC in such a manner that I control the runway selections, Sids and Stars, most of the time. However I do like vectoring, and on occasion, will let P2A dictate the STAR and runway at the destination airport. As I gain more confidence in using Pilot2ATC, I will branch out to more challenges. The nice thing about P2A is that you can have the copilot do most of the coms and frequency changes for you.....just like the real world!

I plan to put Pilot2ATC on my sim PC (currently now installed on a 2nd networked PC) as a friend of mine has determined that the frame rate hit is negligible. Currently, I run an overclocked PC that runs reliably at 5.2 GHz with a 1080Ti GPU, so I get really good VR performance.

Once I move P2A, I will use the built in Oculus microphone to communicate to P2A. In addition, I will use more frequently a little program called Voice Attack (VA), that permits me to issue voice commands. For example, raising and lowering flaps, or gear, or anything else, is possible by translating voice into key press commands. I used Voice Attack when I flew IL-2 1946 combat sim a lot, well before VR became available......it is a very effective tool for VR use, and a lot of DCS VR pilots use it for voice coms.

By having Voice Attack and Pilot2ATC on the same PC, I will be able to train the Oculus microphone to work with these two voice controlled apps. I will designate two buttons on my HOTAS to provide separate "Press to Talk" capabilities.

Voice Attack is a really nice app where you can control a lot of the aircraft's functionality via your voice. All of you may want to check this app out?

BTW, Chase Plane works really well for VR users, and you can setup special views that supplement VR camera positioning. such as the OH panel, the CDU, or switch from Captain view to First officers view, as a few examples.

I believe in the future, as VR improves in resolution, and offers additional functionality, and more 3rd parties support VR, that it will be possible to speak to have it converted to text that will land on your "virtual clip" board, for example. The more I use VR the more I comfortable I get with it.

I use voice attack a lot in Elite Dangerous....... The Oculus Mic pics up spoken commands very well.

Glad you’re loving it!

I’m absolutely in love with the Carenado DA62 cockpit it just looks amazing in 3D.

The interiors textures just pop in 3D!

I use voice attack extensively in DCS and a little bit in P3D when pulling up A2A submenu's.  I imagine that there has to be a voice to clipboard program that could be used as a kneeboard in P3D for "writing" down ATC instructions as they are being read to you.   This clipboard could be brought in as a window in P3D via fly inside or oculus tray tool or something like that

I don't understand why people are resisting VR? Have they not tried it? I totally resisted VR until I tried it...and I had a pretty good physical cockpit build. With VR everyone can literally have a full wrap around 360 degree AUTHENTIC cockpit with all the proper functioning knobs switches and controls in the right place, for EVERY plane. I have never tinkered with so many switches before! I can spend 10 minutes just looking around the entire cockpit familiarizing myself with everything. A cockpit build, unless you go full out replica is basically a Frankenstein plane that is close to GA or close to JETS where VR is a perfect replica of everything you fly in.

So why the resistance? The main excuse I keep hearing is about simulating realism?

I just flew the flyinside B55 Beachcraft, set up an IFR approach, punched in the ILS frequency, set up the auto pilot, took off, raised gear, hit the autopilot and enjoyed the view, intercepted the localizer, captured the glide slope, eased the throttle, dropped flaps, dropped gear etc and glided down to the runway. Everything I used to do with my physical cockpit but all with my virtual hands. That was my biggest sticking point when I was opposed to VR, was that it would be cumbersome to use the virtual hands...I was wrong. It is actually easier and way more fun.

On a side note, I  may try out leap motion because having hand tracking to work the throttles, buttons and switches would be the icing on the cake. 🙂

I know they are coming out with hand tracking on oculus quest...

Fly, I completely understand your enthusiasm, I'm a 'can't go back' VRer to. You wont convince anyone who won't be convinced. Let them find out for themselves as you did.

In the meantime, just feel smug that you have seen the light! They'll come round eventually 👍

You know what I respect about you over the rest of Avsim? You have no problem being completely honest with yourself and will accept and admit to being narrow minded and skeptical of something until you’ve actually experienced it. Don’t let anyone here suppress your joy and enthusiasm about your new experiences. Share and rejoice all you wish!

As for throttle controls with leap motion reverse thrust doesn’t seem to want to work.

Ya also, I checked the demo again and it doesn't look like you can twist knobs like with the touch controllers...instead a slide bar pops up.
