Outdated Bing Maps Data

Featured Replies

Hello, I have great worry that my homecity (Bursa, Turkey) do not have up to date bing map data despite google maps, apple maps and yandex maps having up to date data. Bing maps shows my homecity from like a decade old like form 2009-2010. After this discovery, I looked my country's bing map data and It is very out dated. Even new Istanbul Airport does not exsist. What will happen for these areas, do you guys also discover that your hometown do not have recent map data?

Thank you.

An excellent question. The world will not be perfect, you can bet on it. It will be a long process  to get everything updated everywhere. A process with no end actually.

I had a look at Bursa, never been there to my regret, the Bing DigitalGlobe map is dated 2019 and the map is pretty sharp. You could navigate at ground level without getting lost.

Now tell me, how Bursa is right now in the sim even with OpenLC EU ? Much worse I suppose !

Simming since 1981 -  [email protected] GHz with 16 GB of RAM and a 1080 with 8 GB VRAM running a 27" @ 2560*1440 - Windows 10 - Warthog HOTAS - MFG pedals - MSFS Standard version with Steam

Very interesting to see that even if this simulator is not out yet, we are already asking for the latest Bing imagery to represent our favorite city 🙂 knowing that all the simulators we use now have super primitive representations of the global world using random repetitive textures, in their default scenery.

As far as I can see, no matter how fresh a Bing aerial image is or is not for a specific spot in the world, what we will get out of the box, scenery (and weather) wise, is already a huge value compared to the other simulators available now.

Aerial imagery covering the world compared to generic textures... I will take the Aerial material even if it is 10 years old.

Aerial imagery is very expensive, if let's say you like to create a scenery for a specific area on this planet. Here we get a world wide coverage by paying what a typical video game costs or subscription or whatever method will be used.

For my freeware scenery, I was lucky to have an aerial survey company giving us for free an aerial image for our city yet it was like 10 years old. Things have changed a bit there but I could retouch it  and tweak it in some spots and  no need to say despite being a bit old, when we placed the 3D infrastructure over it, the illusion of realism was like 1000000 times better than the generic textures of the default scenery.

So for most scenery developers, freeware especially, the Bing coverage will be a great gift, as it will reduce the work process and resources required for their freeware project...

Yes Bing Maps stated that it is 2019 but unfortunatly it is not. For instance, I cannot fly over my house as stated ( :D) beacuse my house was built in around 2015 and it does not exsist in the Bing Maps.

Yes you are right there are great value from that but it is very sad for that Bing Map's competitors (Google Maps Yandex, Apple etc.) have recent map like 1 year maxium despite Bing's are over 10 years. I hope they acces data from directly digital globe but finger crossed.

I prefer quality to actuality

They can actually turn this into a feature some day, maybe they can preserve the old satellite data sets and allow us to fly over places the way they were years ago. Now this might not be interesting for every place on the planet, but it could be for certain special places. I'm thinking about Manhattan pre 9/11, Kai-Tak airport and of course Chicago Meigs Field.

I wonder how often updates will be a thing.

The Seattle viaduct situation comes to mind.

That fixed in latest content we’ve seen?

Actually, looking at the Bing Maps view of the new Istanbul Airport, I note that the entire airport has been "smuged over" with a sandy/tan brush. It only appears when you zoom in to a closer view, zoom back out and see no such smudge!

Stuff like this was to be expected. On average Bing map data is neither as new as Google Map data nor does it get updated as frequently.

That is the drawback going on here. But perhaps there will be some synergy effect going on with the Flight Sim and the interest in updating the data more regularly and more widespread will raise within the MS corporation.

What is interesting though is that Bing doesn't seem to be under the same scrutiny as Google Maps is.

Greece has a relatively new law implemented that requires photo imagery of greek airports to be blurred out. If you compare the imagery of Google maps to that of Bing you will find that Google does indeed blur out the higher resolution, so zooming will only give you so much detail, whereas the Bing data is not blurred.

Ahh.. Even without the smug the sattelite imagery looks very bad.

Could be a bit of drawback. I wouldn't say my home city of Manchester England was an obscure city in global terms but the data seems a few years out of date with missing skyscrapers (they aren't even being built in street view!)

But then we know there are only 400 random cities with photogrammetry as well, I guess it just pot luck for now on how well and accurately your hometown will be represented but the good news is that what is represented looks amazing and we will constantly be getting updates which means new cities to visit flying VFR all the time.

That almost looks like censoring.

Indeed. I don't understand what is going on there. Google even has Photogrammetry for that area.

What you see on the right is simply the beginning phase of the construction site, it's pretty clear if you zoom on it. The left picture is even older from a time that the construction hasn't even started yet. And this area is not the "entire airport", it's a very tiny area
