Minimum download speed with faster aircraft

Featured Replies

Sadly, so many things are beyond me, so excuse this noob question

I understand in pre cache mode i will be able to fly fro A a to B, but what if i want to fly randomly in an area of lets say a 150 nm

Will i be able to download only that "tile" so to speak

Also, if downloaded once, will i need to download it again next time i want to fly there

Thanks for the patience in answering this

as far as i know, if you dedicate enough hard disk space (cache), it will stay there, so if you fly the same place it will not necessarily download it again.

I think so too. Maybe Microsoft should offer a device together with MSFS that kills internet connection for all except us in our houshold, once we decide to go flying 😊

You may already have one. Many Internet routers have options to let you control or limit the Internet bandwidth of each device on the network. Although if the router was provided by your ISP, these options may not be available.

This pre-cache mode has not been demonstrated yet. Explaining how something works and actually seeing it in operation are two different things. I can make an informed decision when I have more info from Microsoft. I don't know if I want to fly offline or online since not enough info has been provided yet.

Anyway, this is my last post on this because my initial post was directed at the developers who read these boards. Perhaps they're read this post and respond in due course.

I've seen no demonstration of this pre-cached mode. How does it work? You feed it a flight plan and it determines from that how much data needs to be downloaded? What if it's greater than the available space on someone's SSD? What happens then?

See above. How does this work? How long for the data to be downloaded? Do I have to wait 30 mins before I can take-off?

Microsoft really do need to demonstrate a fast low-level flight to push the sim to its limits.

I have enough to do setting up my aircraft for a flight. I don't need the extra workload of using a map and selecting areas to be downloaded. Early days but this side of things needs explaining better. Hopefully that will come as the sim develops.

I don’t want to see any more low speed flights in the Microsoft videos. I want to see them push the limits of the sim with typical user download speeds and even below average ones so potential customers can evaluate its performance.

Don't be so bloody condescending! 😠 How many Gigabytes will be needed? No examples have been shown as far as I can see. All this is theory.

If I want all of the North America continent from New York to Vancouver how many Gigabytes and how long to download? Actually, don't answer that rhetorical question because you won't know the answer. Only Microsoft know that and they have published any info.

As I said earlier I'm done debating this.

If that is necessary then the product could be considered not fit for purpose. It should be able to handle all aspects of flight, not just some.

Wow Ray, you really do want to have your cake and eat it! You do realise this product's likely 10+ months away from release, not even in full Alpha yet and thus not optimised; therefore showing only "low-level high speed pushing to the limits" will tell us nothing! You don't need to "make an informed decision" yet because the product is a long way from being available to buy and a lot this thread you're asking for answers that are yet exist. I can't see why anyone would need to download the whole of North America in full detail!?

Asobo have given us plenty of info already explaining there will be a full online, hybrid and offline modes, that detail levels will adjust according to your ground speed and internet connection, you can pre-cache areas according to a map or your flightplan (you act like this is going to be such a chore, in flight planning terms it's a drop in the ocean as you well know) and it will use as much cache as you want to assign replacing the oldest stuff with the newest stuff on the fly, and that a 25mb connection was more than sufficient for full quality at the the demo sessions they ran. No matter what mode it's in, it's probably going to look a lot better than any existing sim anyway. Technically it's always pre-caching to an extent so you have seen it. There'll be plenty of previews towards the end of beta where you can decide, and if you're still umming you can just get Xbox GamePass for a month and try it out.

@ckyliu, you haven’t told me anything I don’t already know. I’m well aware of what an alpha build is having been a programmer in my professional life.

I asked a specific question on 30 Nov about downloaded data that hasn’t been answered. Knowing the answer to that would be helpful.

I’m not bothering to comment further on this sim until more info is made available by the developers.

Question is, why ask these super specific questions when you know you won't get the technical answer you're looking for? The developers aren't posting here. You aren't getting some long-haired insider update with precise numbers or measurements, given that most people don't have a clue what it means and it's still so far from release, it would be silly for them to tie themselves up in specific numbers they can't be sure of. Plus, there's things such as latency, distance to CDN, quality of connection, all governs the quality of the experience and even come release, specific numbers might be wildly inaccurate for individual users, who now expect a certain experience.

If you had truly been a programmer, you'd also know you wouldn't get the answer you were looking for.

Anyway, perhaps Microsoft will read this and put some info out.

Microsoft have provided plenty of information on this baring hard numbers which they probably don't know yet.

They have already explained they use an adaptive download system which will tailor the graphical quality to the download speeds available. The download information is also accumalative so if you stay put in an area the graphical quality will increse overtime.

This information was delivered in the World video of the deep dives.

You can get more hands on experience from the audio interview which Flightsim did with the developers who implemented aerodynamics as his home PC only had a 2MB download speed available and he was able to play in reasonable detail.

Granted faster planes will increase the download requirement but the adaptive nature of the system they've implemented should be able to handle the majority of use cases. Let see - I'm sure there will be a lot more information on this stuff closer to release. I'm not worried (he says with a 72MB connection speed!) 🙂

I could be wrong but Ray sounds like one of those people who dumped a lot of money on P3D and is now hoping against hope that the new sim won't meet some specific criteria that'll allow him to not have some kind of buyer's remorse lol.

You couldn't be further from the truth. I want a 64-bit FSLabs Concorde. They will only build one version. Either for P3Dv5 or MFS. I am at their mercy. I will go with whatever sim they decide on.

Don't judge people until you're aware of all the facts. That is my last word on this.

I can't imagine you get much time to look at the scenery anyway if you fly a Concorde lol

This has turned into a Ray bashing party which is unacceptable.

He asked a legitimate question directed at developers, not regular sim users.

Thank you.
