Worn out vs New cockpit

Featured Replies

Hello, I like MSFS to add the option to toggle on and off between old vs new cockpit looks, that apply to the windshield as well, I think it looks cool and realistic to have some dirt and dust all over the window, but also I find it to be distracting and annoying to have a black spot that my eyes focuses on the whole time while I'm trying to enjoy a beautiful scenery.

Hi Evan and welcome

The wearout of cockpits adds to the suspension of disbelief if it is not overdone. The MV 732 comes to mind. I don’t want to seat in an aircraft which seems just pulled out of a junkyard. As for the reflections or dirt on windshield a minimalist approach is also welcome. I still remember the annoying scratch on the windshield of one of my all time favorites, the Do-27😏.

VC wear and tear is generally acceptable if it is subtle, but smudges and marks on windscreens are definitely not welcome in my flight simulator. As Evan has correctly pointed out, they would be an annoying distraction when I am trying to enjoy the view.

Agree with the above here - when the first trailer came out I kept wiping my screen because I thought I had some dirty that was obstructing the glorious view of the new sim but alas it was part of the cockpit. Same with finger prints on digital gauges.

As far as I'm concerned the plane I fly is "mine" and I don't want it to be dirty!

Brand new cockpit, fully seviceable, full of juice and no monthly insurance.

That being said, what i would like is an a/c that has some wear and tear on the outside( Dont feel soo bad when i fly a hole into the runway)

On second thoughts, a clean windscreen definitely, but some wear in the cockpit would not bother me too much( tho mfs2020 wont sell second hand planes I am sure)

I would also like the intensity of wear and tear effects to be customizable.

Yes, that would be nice, especially in choppers( like the Huey ) and GA craft

But i think we are asking a bit too much now.

So Asobo, see what you can do , but dont forget the next surprise for us early in the coming week please☺️

You know, just to clear away the early January blues.

This is why I am not interested in those "bugs on the windscreen" features seen in one or two top end airliner packages. It may well be ultra realistic if you consider real world operations in their entirety, but there are some things that I can do without in flight simulation, and that is one of them.

I don't mind appropriate levels of wear and some hazing and crazing of old windows and windscreens, just so long as it is not so bad that you really cannot see through it.

My computer: ABS Gladiator Gaming PC featuring an Intel 10700F CPU, EVGA CLC-240 AIO cooler (dead fans replaced with Noctua fans), Asus Tuf Gaming B460M Plus motherboard, 16GB DDR4-3000 RAM, 1 TB NVMe SSD, EVGA RTX3070 FTW3 video card, dead EVGA 750 watt power supply replaced with Antec 900 watt PSU.

Wouldn‘t mind some wear and tear either, as long as it looks realistic, but I‘d like to have a repair option (in the hangar?).

I know we have rented our fair share of "beaters"  and  few scratches and smudges don't bother me as long as it's not excessive and distracting. Like it's been said, it's my aircraft now, not a rental.

In my flying career I have operated a range of old and new aircraft. I have even picked up aircraft fresh off the assembly line with that new jet smell to them. I can tell you that we primarily love a nice clean aircraft and complained heavily when the cockpit was worn and looked to be falling apart. The C-141B was the oldest jet I operated. I used to carry eye glass wipes and paint brushes so I could brush out dust/lint and wipe down the FMS and instruments. We refrained from touching things to minimize finger prints. I tend to look at the flight deck as an office and feel I work best in a clean operable environment. When things are clean and looking nice, you actually feel better. Even after a flight, I take time to put things back to an orderly fashion and remove all paperwork/trash. When the glareshield gets raggedy and tattered or the sun visor is crazed and cracked, I write it up. Any thing that's broken or worn, I write it up. Even in places where the paint is worn and metal shines through, they will touch it up until the jet goes down for painting. I have even leaned out the window to clean my own windscreen.

I have seen some of the old cargo operators who aircraft looked cringe worthy when you step onto the flight deck, makes you feel dirty. I also have been fortunate that the maintainers of the jets I've flown take pride in the jets they manage. They are quick to change out things that look worn out and unserviceable. It's a bit disrespectful to let an aircraft look as if it was pulled from a salvage yard. I have seen plenty of old aircraft, like the G3s I used to fly. They were old, but inside and out, they were pristine. Only the steam gauges would hurt your eyes every time you would fly one after flying a G5 or G550.

Maybe a slider where you can scale how much dirt, dust, oil, greasy finger prints etc to apply to cockpit surfaces, from 0% dirty (ie brand new) to 100% dirty (filthy).

And a slider for the exterior too... dirt, oil, paint chips, bugs on windscreen, etc etc.

Presumably surfaces are somehow "tagged" internally, like "glass cockpit display", or "windscreen" etc.  Asobo could apply appropriate textures to the surface (eg fingerprint to a glass cockpit display) and with subtle random variations, the amount depending on the slider.

Third parties could produce custom textures.

I like this idea, it could even enable 3rd party developers to sell light versions, that don't include all the extra work, for less.
