I was hoping they would include the CJ4 in this Alpha version... still nothing. Next (and last) chance on the next Alpha update (V5)...

Back in the Global Preview event, it was said that ATC, AI and seasons were not in consideration for inclusion at release, but thanks to the community's feedback, they are here already.

CB, we saw pics of snow a couple of times, not of seasonal landscapes yet, if I am not mistaken.

I’m a little confused by this update. Are they saying FS2020 will have forecasted weather as well as real time?

Indeed, the Meteoblue guy only talked about weather forecasting.

It is possible that MSFS will not have, strictly speaking, a "real time" weather, but only weather forecast from their own Meteoblue model.

In other words, the in-sim weather will be forecasted starting from the initial conditions (which may be a few hours old) by using their weather model. And the forecast is then periodically reset and updated (probably every few hours?).

I think this is MUCH better than the so called "real time" weather we had until now: in that case, the weather was basically static until a new update was available, and then either a sudden jump of in-sim weather (killing realism) or, as I think plugins like Active Sky do, some fudge to smooth the weather transitions. But basically it still was static weather, just updated periodically.

With MSFS instead, for the first time we should see truly dynamic weather, evolving according to real world physics thanks to the atmospheric model used by Meteoblue. So very plausible weather dynamics and presumably no weather shifts.

I think you might be correct.

The only issue i'd have with that is that even at initial condition, the models can be wrong when you're talking on a local scale. I suppose its still better than creating the weather from METAR's. Active sky is supposed to be accurate, maybe on a regional scale yea but its still not that great.

And at least one Beta version. Since aircraft models are considered content rather than a feature, there are plenty of chances left.

I can't remember anything before that "Let it snow!" video (which I think was the big reveal of a shader solution), except maybe a few snowy landscapes, which could have been part of the imagery. I'm not completely sure about Asobo's statements regarding seasons in the Global Preview event, but they definitely said at the X019 event that they wanted to make seasons more than just recolours before presenting them as a feature.

Impressive even with just one pic of Ontario Place

MSFS impresses me again and again.

  • Amazing effort with weather simulation.
  • Continously improving a flight model with great potential.
  • Great scenery and visuals allowing for VFR practise.
  • Dedicated to the SDK.

This could very well be the sim of sims.

You won't get every cloud that's raining in your back garden, but it looks like it'll be pretty good, at least over uncomplicated areas.  The 250 million cells over 60 altitude levels they mentioned correspond to a 10km grid on the earth's surface, if I did the sums right - that was par for the course in professional weather forecasting a few years ago.  Have a look at this:

What I understand is this is what he showed with the two batteries rolling in opposite direction, a small error might lead to very different forecasts. They alleviate that by simulating several scenarios and using deep learning to select the best forecast. Fascinating.

I wasn't expecting new footage but WOW, did they show us beautiful landscapes and clouds! I've paused the video a few times just to enjoy the visuals and then rewinded to follow what was being explained.
