Preview: Microsoft’s new FS is a beautiful work in progress

Featured Replies

A couple of points that were clear was that the sim is going to have an incremental update ability , this was a constant element in the alpha testing according to the interview as is the scenery data being updated , streamed as it is can be constantly integrating new images , all considered a modern upgrade pathway compared to FSX with 2 service packs and one upgrade .

Wow. Everyone should be required read that article. I think it may capture the sentiment of many, many of the alpha participants. There is so much still to be excited about, but people absolutely need to go in with eyes wide open that this is in fact a beautiful work in progress.

Agree... expect for this part

Actually, that's true as well.

I don´t want to start any rumours, these are purely my own thoughts - but if someone told me that Microsoft gave Asobo a deadline to finally get this out of the door (especially with the bumped up release date), I wouldn´t be falling off my chair with being surprised.

No flightsimulator is ever finished and at some time it needs to get out into the wild.

This is true of all games. The publisher sets a deadline and it usually launches on the published release date, bugs and all. Some games have been delayed, but it isn't typical. Forums (and reviews) are filled with negativity, while the pressured development team (who are well aware of the game's issues) frantically continue to try to work out why the main character's horse suddenly hovers above the ground, upside down, when dismounted by a lakeside. A patch will come, eventually, but the media and social media damage is often done, putting off many potential players.

My brother is a games developer, ever tied to the deadlines set by the publisher, continuing to work long hours after a game's release.

yes, this can happen and it even has a name. It is called a contract.

Simming since 1981 -  [email protected] GHz with 16 GB of RAM and a 1080 with 8 GB VRAM running a 27" @ 2560*1440 - Windows 10 - Warthog HOTAS - MFG pedals - MSFS Standard version with Steam

Scenery artifacts and bugs are not a big issue. It has 0 impact on the quality of the sim imo. And Asobo can't possibly fix every one of them before release, that would just be a complete unnecessary release delay. You hardly even notice most of these scenery bugs from altitude anyway, unless you're at a very low altitude and look for them.

I'm sure Asobo has a long list of scenery bugs they're working through to fix, and that list will be ever growing as more and more people get access to the game and report bugs. There is no other way around this with today's tech and they're limited by Bing maps. The scenery will also improve as Bing maps updates anyway. Bing Maps is constantly adding more oblique imagery (photogrammetry) for instance. Hopefully they also solve the issue of very outdated imagery in certain regions.

I'm just exhilarated we don't have to fly around generic autogen that all looks the same anymore. All parts of the Earth will now actually be interesting to explore. Some parts will look relatively nicer of course because of better imagery coverage, but all areas will look stunning compared to P3D and x-plane autogen, and even compared to Orbx scenery.

This is only confirming my perception, that the release comes at least 3 months too soon and that the Beta phase should be at least thrice as long as it is now.

These issues are not minor.

I don't really understand your attitude here. If you feel like, its released 3 months to early, just wait 3 months. Asobo/Microsoft doesn't stop development, simply because they have released the sim.

🙂

As somebody who didn't get into the Alpha/Beta I'm more than happy for them to release as is. Sure there'll be some rough parts and maybe it could've used another couple of months of polish but it seems ready enough for me based on what I'm seeing and what I'm hearing from level headed people who were in the Alpha. What's more key is what happens post release over the next 6-12 months.

I really hate this NDA thing at this point. Because while no testers can now see the same than I can see, I can’t talk free about it.

Don't think you need to say anything else than you already have to know your constant negative thoughts about the sim. You'll likely never be happy with anything.

There's so much footage I think most who are interested have a pretty extensive impression of what the sim is like now.

Welcome to the world. People have opinions, everybody has one, and can differ from yours.

Sure. Is just than I can’t explain what I mean about the part I disagree with.
