Benefits of Steam, Windows purchase stores

There's not much difference apart from the convenience of having all your stuff in one place.

However, if you are a sociable type who likes to fly multiplayer with friends who also buy it through Steam, they will see via the Steam interface when you are online and playing it, so this is a potentially easier way to hook up with them, and you can chat to them through the Steam chat if you like too.

You mean just like they will when you're logged onto your live account and playing..? Right.

This is a flight sim website, it's more likely people on this site will have other flight sims, which are on Steam, not MS. That's the point.

i dont think so, so thats why i am getting if via the ms store.

you dont need an xbox login to play the game. thats nonsense.

you need an ms account, thats not the same.

Of course you do. It's not an "xbox login" it's your gamertag, and it's automatically there with your MS account...

From that point of view could make sense, assuming then flight simmers dom't really game, and at which point they won't even have steam, which doesn't seem too far fetched from the numerous comments seen around the site... 🙄

Possibly, but you've got the two main alternatives to the new MS sim (FSX and XPlane 11) on Steam, plus quite a lot of other sims as well, train and truck sims too, which get mentioned pretty frequently on here by a lot of users. So I'd say quite a few users may have Steam and really they are querying getting it on Steam in relation to this being an alternative to MS, rather than because they are unfamiliar with Steam. Then again, you could be right too.

Personally, I have a bunch of other games as well as friends hooked up on the Steam platform so for convenience of both social aspects as well as reinstall aspects Steam is an attractive option for me at this point. However...I'm also concerned about the need to better understand how patching and 3rd party install/patching will work moving forward before I decide. I've been reading here that the MS file structure can be a real hassle and that Steam might be a more direct path in this regard...but then I also know that Steam patches can make you wait a long time...so Im a bit confused as to which platform will be better for my own needs.

I've originally pre-ordered on the Microsoft Store and was contemplating on getting it through Steam instead. But it seems like MS has already charged my CC. Still don't know if I should stick to MS version of Steam.

Really wouldn't say that is true at all, don't think there is any games where the 'live channel' Steam version suddenly becomes outdated compared to other launchers / storefronts. That would be extremely bad practice in the industry and it would break multiplayer constantly, meaning people wouldn't be able to fly together and storm their support on regular basis. I'm going to assume this is because of X-Plane's beta branch channel? Definitely a very different situation and something you won't see with this.

They have already said internally the beta will be continuing post launch, so to even be on the test channel, it'll be separate installation and to do any tests, they will most likely continue with the watermarked versions. Doubt people will be using that as their primary install like a lot of simmers do with the X-Plane beta. Think how they run that show is a bit of an outlier.

Just put in a refund request if you want to switch over, as long as the game hasn't been released, they can't really keep you locked in; https://support.xbox.com/help/subscriptions-billing/manage-subscriptions/digital-goods-subscriptions-refund

There will be not any advantage to buy via Steam, except you will see MSFS between other games in Steam library 🙂 . Other else will be the same with both stores, so there isn't any reason to change buying metod if you was charged already.

This is looking to be pretty confusing. The Sea of Thieves (SoT) game is an Xbox and PC game accessed via the MS Store. It recently released on Steam. Looking at the forum posts about it, these are things to consider (assuming the comments in the forums are correct):

If you own the game on MS Store, you have to buy it again on Steam (i.e., you can’t simply add the game to Steam).

The Steam game is still linked to the MS account, so the gamer tag is still used and it needs to start up the MS Store so you can sign in before you start the game.

Assuming the SoT chatter is correct AND will hold for MFS, the Steam option looks to be nuanced and not ideal.

You're confusing the Xbox login and MS Store, two separate applications. Regardless which store you buy it from, you'll need the Xbox application login to use their online services.

I think you will find MS are changing the XBOX interface and rolling everything into one, and will end up being Game Store.

So is it confirmed that Steam will download and install the files also as decrypted files into a folder I have no direct access to f.e. to manually delete or reverify contents if something with the update(uninstall process should go wrong and I could end up with 100GB inaccessable data...(unless I hack myself back into the folder structure)? That would be bad.

My MSFS install has 8 folders they will be updated as soon as MS throws the switch i suspect.

It's not 100% sure yet, but it's very probably. It would be very complicated if the Steam version had a different file structure, than MS Store version. It would be problem for on-line updating, streaming, add-ons instalation etc.
