How I've decided to fly in FS2020...

Featured Replies

FS2020 is arriving soon for those mortal people like me who did not get the chance to play it in the early stages of development. As a good "simmer" I have already pre-ordered on Steam and will install it on day 1. One thing that I have noticed is to how many things I have thought about doing it when I load it the first time. A short flight on the C172 or straight jump to the big jets?
I've been wondering for this a lot and also the thought of taking a look at the detailed airports that come with it has also crossed my mind.  But suddenly the thought of spoiling it and the surprise effect would be lost too. Let me explain:
Today we live in a society in which everything is done in a very fast and "right at your hands" way. No need to ask a person where is restaurant X or Shop Y; Google Maps will tell you. Remembering which movie that Actor or actress was also comes in handy IMDB.com. Other questions that arises on your mind during the day Wikipedia is there. I feel that I am becoming one of those passengers from that space cruiser from the movie "Wall-E" you know, the ones where social contact is through electronic devices mostly even though the person you are talking to is right next to you. This indicates to me that our current technology is turning myself into a very anxious person. Waking up and checking W/Up messages and e-mails instead of yawning and stretching. I don't even go to the shower without checking for messages before. What is happening? Why can't I do morning stuff like enjoying a nice breakfast before checking my apps or social media updates?
This process has taken many years of cell/apps usage and I have realized how it has increased a lot my level of anxiety. So I have decided to tone it down a lot. I see kids and teens going through the same process, and we are all turning into DZ (Digital Zombies). A simple test that you can perform on yourself is by reading a magazine or a newspaper article  (printed one please) and see if you can read the whole article uninterrupted. Thoughts like the desire to check for messages or anything that can get you off from a text you are subjected to read is also a factor that increases anxiety in my opinion. Reading boring report charts or that e-mail from a disrupted client the urge to escape that moment and stay in your comfort zone (W/Up, Candy Crush, Poker etc) increases a lot. We just cannot concentrate any more like we did in the 90' and before.
I see a lot of posts and YouTube videos on FS2020 and people already are loading and checking out every detailed airport or just trying to find animals in Africa. Also, famous spots like Giza, Grand Canyon, Mt. Everest etc are loaded and flown in seconds. So I have decided to counter that anxiety force or whatever modern-day psychology term that is by trying to enjoy FS2020 to a higher level than I had when FS2004 came out. I'll be doing this:

1- Choosing a single airport to be my Home Base.
2- From this HB only I will be starting my flights.
3- FSEconomy will be in use for all flights mostly.
4- I will not load an airport just to check it out. I will fly there from my HB. If the airport is located in another continent, I'll fly with the appropriate aircraft to get there than swap for a lighter one to enjoy the scenery.
5- Changing Weather will be allowed but it will change gradually if there is that option. No changing Wx on the spot especially when flying. The surprise of my first storm will be expected when I see SigWx charts and flying towards it.

I think this method will extend FS2020's surprises and make it a very enjoyable experience. Any location that I visit will be a great almost real-life story to tell friends and especially to myself. The first flight to Japan, West Africa, Canada, Alaska, South America, Caribbean etc. Lots of potential here. So my advice: take the phone down gradually on a daily basis and treat FS2020 not as a flight sim game, but as a tool to give you excellent memories in years to come. Oh, have I mentioned better with multiplayer and shared cockpit? Don't forget to always take pictures from your flights and write it down on a journal.

Happy memories for you all.

😉

Sounds like You have a really good plan. Enjoy it! I sincerely mean it.
On those intercontinental or transcontinental flights, a good read of where You are going or flying over could add more substance to Your journal.

Cheers.

If you're able to keep that sort of discipline then that sounds like a lot of fun! I don't think I would be able to do that, however I saw another post on here about an around the world flight that has over 200 legs that I'm curious to give a try. Good Luck!

I love the idea of having a purpose behind flying. I've never really used Fseconomy but am looking forward to getting into Air Hauler 2.

Bring on the 18th!

Gonna do the same

Instead of spawning in airports will fly there as well, get an Aircraft and give it a unique tailnumber and gonna go explore the world until PMDG drops 777 or some descent Airbus.

my first commute will be from home Tbilisi to France to “pick up” TBM. Gonna do that in Cessna or Cirrus with many stops on the way. Hopefully most of TBM issues will be solved by then if there are any.

and going to take every flight as serious and real as it gets.

Nice. Hadn't thought about reading something on my destination. Tks

I plan on taking a look at my hometown first in the 152 or 172, but mostly getting familiar with the new features, playing with weather, ect..

When I first got FSX I planned a flight that took in every high definition city and every high definition airport and each badge location, and flew from one to the next.  I originally flew the Mooney until I had to fly to Narsarsuaq for the Atlantic crossing and used the Baron for the extra range.  The flight from Tahiti to Easter Island was in the Lear, then I flew around the island in the Bell 206 to look for stone faces.  When I wanted to land at the south magnetic pole, I used the Goose, fell in love with it, and used it as much as possible from then on.  But I flew whatever aircraft was appropriate for that mission.

Of course I didn't plan it all at once, but I hit everything in one area, then flew to another area and hit everything there.  This whole thing took well over a year.

Start off in some small aircraft and find your house, then go from there. 🙂

That is the spirit

I too have a plan for the first few days in the sim: I am going to first fly over my home town (rite of passage). Then I am flying to Oslo to have a look at our capitol. From there I am flying down through Europe to Innsbruck, on to Italy and Malta before crossing over to Africa and Libya. Then I am heading east untill I hit the Nile. From there I am heading south untill I reach the Cape of Good Hope.

That should take me a little while. I am going to fly pretty low and slow. Only GA. I will continue where I left off last, and no skipping ahead. Real Weather of course (which is why I might have to change the frame because I might need a de-icing kit (mostly relevant in northern- and middle Europe).

After that, though, I will probably plan other trips. I won't stop myself from taking small trips wherever I want, and I don't want to make a rule for myself that I can only fly there from where ever I left off. I feel that is a way of closing down the sim world instead of using all the possibilities that the sim offers, but hey. That's just me. To each his own, and I wish you the best of luck on your journey, @Pilot_76 👨‍✈️🛩️

I have taken a somewhat similar approach since 2010.  I fly primarily out of three airports.  My home base here in eastern Maryland; the town where I attended college; and another base of operations related to past life events and following the Indianapolis race car series.

I have in some years flown the entire away game schedule for my university's basketball season; have flown to tracks to take in the entire Indycar race schedule; and have flown to many Chicago White Sox baseball games and to St Louis Blues away hockey games, including their successful Stanley Cup Championship run last year.  When my schedule allows I also fly to selected NASCAR Cup races.

I also fly to airports to take in family events, like my Dad's 94th birthday near Asheville, NC.

All of my flying is GA, primarily with the Real Air TDv2, the Milviz B55 Baron, and Milviz Cessna 310R.  I complete additional flights with the Carenado 337, and with the Carenado B58 Baron.

My MSFS habits will be much the same.  I am blessed with a home base airport (KESN) that Orbx has included in its Global Freeware Airport offering.  My St Louis airport for Blues games and my Indianapolis base for Indycar races are also in that Orbx series.  KSUS and KUMP respectively.

If you actually may see your house that would a nice touch. I'll look for mine for sure...

I actually did this exact thing when I started with xp11.

I've been flying XP11 for over 4 years now and I will be getting MS2020 next week, I too fly in real time, real weather and I have flown all over. I live in the UK and I bought X Aviations TBM900 from day one nearly 2 years ago now, i fly nothing else, i love the aircraft bigtime and I know it inside out. I will be parking it up on monday evening at LFBT in France (Were the TBM is built) and on tue evening maybe wed all being well  and I get the new Sim downloaded etc i will be picking up my brand new TBM930 and starting my epic journeys in MSF2020, I  just hope the new Sim runs well on my i5 ..3.4ghz, Nvidia 1060 computer.... i can't piggin wait!!!!

Yes, I was intrigued by that too, and have written up all the legs in a spreadsheet, ready to begin the journey!

May all your landings be safe ones!
