Any word on manuals

Featured Replies

Let's be honest there should be a manual but there is not whilst asobo did incredible things in some areas they certainly dropped the ball in others, that's where the forums come into their own as there are some really smart helpfully people. I would prefer asobo focus on the patches and worry about the manual later

😂 might be the wrong forum to disparage boomers.

And the Internet (forums specifically) might be the wrong medium to suggest that only people who read manuals know how to read.

It's the 21st Century. Actually, we are entering the third decade of the 21st Century. Let's be real. There shouldn't be a manual. There are far better ways now to convey information about a PC-based product.

I was going to try the checklists for the Longitude, but they only have two.

One reason you need the manuals is for the charts to do calculations with. They are not going to have YouTube videos for every conceivable condition pre-calculated for you.

As a new flyer I don't need a full manual, but I'd sure like to know take off and landing speeds.

A 1 pager listing them all would be sweet.

Cheers

So, now I know why when I do a search for "microsoft software manuals" just on Amazon alone I get only 896 results. I wonder if there would be more if all software vendors were included. Sure seems like a waste of paper given that there are far better ways.

The aircraft have checklists, which state what needs to be done and even highlights the button required at each stage, and you can have it all done automatically by the sim of you like.

That level of detail is more than enough for beginners.

I think the interactive checklists go a long way and are a very engaging way to learn the new air planes. The only thing that I would like with them is landing/flaps/takeoff speed charts.

Well there’s this available, but don’t know how good it is...https://sofly.io/product/flight-simulation-guide/

I’m sure nothing will compare to the good old days when we had proper manuals like this....https://www.ebay.com/itm/A2-FS2-Flight-Simulator-II-FLIGHT-PHYSICS-AIRCRAFT-CONTROL-SUB-LOGIC-BOOKS-/124062184210

This SoFly digital manual actually looks like a handy overview. £10 might be a tad high.  Maybe Asobo will buy it and include it as “ manuals” and hush the crowds.

I would go for a few TOLD cards for the Longitude and CJ4 myself.

When Pigs Fly . Ray Marshall .

I should imagine that the developers well know that the community will produce websites, youtube videos, etc, so why should they devote expense to producing a detailed manual, when it can be focused on the sim.  This seems reasonable to me.

Having said that, I go into options (and I use this only as an example, I realise most will know what v-sync is), and select to turn on/off v-sync, what is the "description" on the RHS?

V-sync:  "enable or disable v-sync"

Well, no sheet, Sherlock.  That is not a description of v-sync, it is a description of a tick box.  Would it really have been so much trouble to have described what v-sync is, for those who might not know?

P.S. Before the rabid f4nboys descend on me, on first impressions I'm actually very impressed with what I've seen so far and an optimistic that we have a base on which much can be built over the next decade(s).

But irritations like the above just grind my gears.

That would be great if I could get in, but I can't and I don't see any way of getting help 😠

If you have an account try to get help from
https://flightsimulator.zendesk.com/hc/en-us

I have yet to buy the sim but have a xbox account and get in smoothly.

We need some precision manuals.

Really wish the community had a development group for that sort of thing

Take-offs are optional, landings are mandatory.
The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire.
To make a small fortune in aviation you must start with a large fortune.

There's nothing less important than the runway behind you and the altitude above you.
It's better to be on the ground wishing you were in the air, than in the air wishing you were on the ground.

I sure would appreciate manuals - but something that would be nice and work for all generations is to have a bunch more of the in game tutorials for each aircraft? I would like to a have a couple per aircraft that you can go through and then get "certified" on the King Air etc. But I agree that the way they have set up the checklists is actually a nice way to learn the systems as well.

But even though I am post-boomer (1970) - there is nothing like a fat manual to slam in the table. In the DCS community we have Chucks guides that are really nice as a compromise beteen the dry 700+ page manuals of 1998 and the 32 page manuals of today that are useless. An example below - his Guide to the F18 Hornet in DCS that I really like. And it is a couple of hundred pages 🙂

https://www.mudspike.com/chucks-guides-dcs-f-a-18c-hornet/

And that is a non paid enthusiast... Impressive! So if he gets bribed by MS that has the money to do it for MSFS, I would be happy...
