Radio Towers MIA?

Featured Replies

Are radio/TV transmission towers not in the database?  I just did a short night VFR local flight over an area which should have had a tower with a flashing light.  I did not find it.  Towers can be significant hazards as well as landmarks for flight.   These structures appear on VFR section maps.   I will be a little disappointed If they are not included at some point.

I've seen a couple towers and wind turbines so far in my flying.

FSX Gold SP2 (FSGen + GEX + UTX + REX) --- XP10 / XP11 --- MSFS 2020

Intel i5-7500 CPU @ 3.40GHz / 16GB / NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3060 12GB

Honeycomb Alpha & Bravo / MFG Crosswind v3

I think they do not have an obstacle database....  I mean yes I've seen wind turbines...but no cell phone towers, tv/radio antennas.

Everything that was in hazards.bgl in P3D appears to be gone.  I used radio towers extensively as landmarks during VFR flight.

Oh! I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth
And danced the skies on laughter-silvered wings;

MSFS has plenty of wind turbines in locations where they actually exist, but no antenna towers. I have heard there may be plans to bring an obstacle database to the sim eventually, but that is not confirmed.

P3DV5 has gone overboard in the opposite direction, with way too much content in the obstacle database, including light poles and other objects which are really not actual hazards to air navigation. It wouldn’t be a problem but for the fact that anything in the database appears to grow into narrow spikes hundreds of feet tall when viewed from high altitude, which can make the sim world look like a pincushion.

That's a bit of a shame the radio/TV towers are not there yet, hopefully some day MS will add these in - very important for VFR navigation - they are on the aviation charts.

Also miss the water towers...

I noticed this as well earlier today.

I would file a bug report as they show on Bing "3d" maps, I would think that the sim should have them as well. I filed but the more who do will make some noise.

Power plant smokestacks are also not rendered (at least in rural areas).

I was actually just going to post this. The local nuclear power plant that's been a staple of my flight sim scenery is not there. It just doesn't feel right despite the otherwise gorgeous scenery.

I saw several extruded via photogrammetry on my recent flight this morning. Your graphics settings may be too low, altho I also agree these should be generic actual 3D objects in a hazards database

Outside of photogrammetry areas there are no obstacles other than windmills.  They have said that integrating a full obstacle database is in the plans.

This was mentioned as being part of the world updates. Just gotta give it time.

I don't think they can just use an obstacle database because they have to make sure it lines up with the orthos.

I do think it is kind of funny - the big microwave tower about a 1/4-mile from my house is not depicted, but the house right behind mine on my block which has solar panels on their roof actually also has solar panels on their roof in the sim as well!  So whether you have solar panels on your house or not seems to be in the Bing database somehow.

This is exactly the kind of scenery that 3rd part developers can provide.

We could have many different tower types in their correct locations all over the world.

ORBX, are you listening?

It's reading it from the aerial image. It can also spot satellite dishes sometimes.

Towers are tougher I think because I bet the AI reads them as solid buildings a lot of the time from the top-down view.
