August 25, 20205 yr OoO now this is something. Just going to sit back and wait for the fireworks to start over at MS HQ lol i7-8600k @ 3.70 GHz 16.0 GB Ram OS Win 10-64 bit Geforce GTX 1070

We very much need a website (or forum section) exclusively for publishing freeware MSFS creations, much like x-plane.org and their forums (minus their marketplace). Unless i've missed something here, AVSIM has an enormous library with sections already created ready for free creations to be added?

You're more likely to get a C&D from Microsoft. Can you picture the Google PR campaign? "Microsoft couldn't quite get there with their new flight simulator so we stepped in to help them finish it." I really haven’t explored this site much but I should haha 🙂 I was thinking an exclusively-MSFS type site where everything is directly compatible with the sim. Can you at least filter by sim here? Haven’t tried it.

If you distribute something using Google's hand-made 3D objects and that violates their terms of use (though I have no idea if it actually does), it won't be MSFT sending a C&D. And Azure is the showcase, not Bing. MSFT won't feel threatened by this in the least though they certainly won't promote misappropriating other's content. But there is the 3D Warehouse website like the OP said. This can be done without upsetting anyone.
August 25, 20205 yr Nice! I can't believe we are one week in and the community is coming up with stuff like this! i5-12400, RTX 3060 Ti, 32 GB RAM

I was thinking separating the actual help with MSFS2020 from the opinions about MSFS. I put a mod to the CJ4 that makes it fly rationally (not a rocket with 30 minutes of fuel) in this forum 12 hours ago. It quickly found its way to page 5 of the forum, yet I know more than two people have complained about wanting a better CJ4...it's just impossible right now to find useful stuff amongst all the "here's why I'm not installing MSFS" or "I wasted 3 cheeseburgers" threads... 16 minutes ago, Ianrivaldosmith said: https://www.msfsaddons.org/ Thanks for pointing this out! 24 minutes ago, FlyingInACessna said: That was my thought too. Even if distributed as freeware, is this technically legal? Is it any different than using Google Maps imagery for X-Plane orthos? I think that's right. I have built a lot of 'ortho' for P3D using Ortho4XP. And I believe while it's all fine for me to do that, some have gotten into trouble for distributing it. Many do it, though. 5800X3D | Radeon RX 6900XT

Maybe that was Ortho4XP’s workaround... they didn’t technically distribute it themselves, they simply created a tool that very very easily allows the user to create their own ortho tiles... hmmm even that sounds odd
August 25, 20205 yr Very exciting. I hope there's away to drop the polygon count because 3D Warehouse stuff tends to be on the non-gaming very high mark. MCX used to be able to optimise and drop polygons before exporting so hopefully coming if not already available. Good stuff OP well done!
August 25, 20205 yr Even the lighting on the stadium is done well vs. the surrounding area. Good job. Is it possible to embed an entire city of Google's photogrammetry to MSFS, or is it extremely labor intensive? Google has many more cities rendered in photogrammetry, while Microsoft's is of better quality. But I'd much rather have Google's stuff than Azure AI. Edited August 25, 20205 yr by Heli

I'll try again. Yes, if Google's TOS actually says you can't distribute it, they're perfectly within their rights to send a C&D. However they would be incredibly stupid to do so, because the marketing opportunity it presents is too good to pass up. If they're smart, they'll very quickly offer a license to the infringing individuals so that those people can continue using Google to make the Microsoft product better. And yeah, I get it, Azure, etc etc, but we're talking about public image here, and the general public sees "Microsoft Flight Simulator," not "A flight simulator produced by Microsoft but developed by Asobo and using Azure AI interpretation of Bing maps." Similar things have happened in other industries. A brewery in Colorado decided to make Count Chocula beer. Count Chocula being a cereal produced by General Mills, the brewery should have asked General Mills for permission before using General Mills branding on their beer. General Mills would have been completely within its legal rights to send a C&D to the brewery. Instead, they sent a truckload of Count Chocula to the brewery and enjoyed the good PR from doing something cool for a local brewery, and the free advertising from having Count Chocula beer make national news. And then they upped the ante, and sent the brewery a truckload of Wheaties, which got turned into another beer called HefeWheaties. That's doing PR right, and if Google is smart they'll follow General Mills' example. Ryzen 7 7800X3D/B650 X AX | 5090 | 32gig | Win10 | Pimax Crystal Light
