Freeware Monaco - Just Stunning

Featured Replies

It does look stunning in the video and screenshots but it's definitely "Cadillac" scenery for a comparably-equipped system, at least for now. I have a mix of old and new (i7-4790, 32G RAM, RTX 2070 SUPER) and have it tweaked to the best of my abilities to maintain a smooth 30FPS+ just about everywhere in MFS. But no sooner do I point the nose in the direction of this scenery, let alone get close to it, does my FPS drop to 10-15FPS.

Hopefully, it will be optimized or maybe toned down a bit for those of us not running cutting-edge systems yet. Kudos to the developers, just the same.

This is just an import from google maps. It's probably illegal and anyone can do this following a tutorial on youtube.

It's unoptimized because it lacks different level of details

Not functional. It is nice... but FPS is down to 10. I have the latest i9-10900 Processor/PC

Not really, the real problem is that it comes with 16.653 individual 256x256 textures in the texture folder, and each one is a different material, and so many material changes are very expensive.

If it used few 4k textures instead, it could have used 256 times LESS textures ( about 65 ), meaning only 65 material changes, but of course that requires knowing how to do proper material baking.

Thanks David.

I also downloaded Asobo Malaga. I'm assuming that I extract into my community folder?

hi

thanks for the download link but have you got the link to where you seen it as it would be nice to see any new updates for this addon

thanks

Definitely better looking than default, but a framerate killer for sure. If the uploader can get the LOD sorted, it will be a nice addition. I love spending time in Monaco and would love to see good representations of Cannes and Nice too.

Umberto,

I grant you permission to make this your new project. 🙂  I know general scenery is not specifically FSDT's realm...but if you model LFMN and throw in Monaco, I'm a day 1 buyer! 🙂

Of course, knock out ORD and DFW 1st. 😉

Can't wait to get them in my sim!  Still blown away with the ORD vid...amazing stuff.

That's the crux of being a commercial developer: you can't do something that might look fun, because while freeware authors can get away with taking Google maps objects, we surely can't and, even if we made it as freeware, Google lawyers would look it as a PR initiative, and will sue us into space...

So we cannot afford doing something like that, even if I had to look at that technique, to know about possible pitfalls, and possible solutions. Maybe the author read my post, and could use it as a suggestion where to improve.

Well...it was a fun thought to bounce around in my brain...but I figured as much.

I hope the author follows your suggestions, I know there is a lot of work that has to be done to "fine tune" the scenery to make it usable.  Some of it may be out of his level of expertise, but regardless it is great to see the community taking interest at a level I've never seen in such a short time of a new release.

While some have mused the idea that commercial devs won't have a place in the market with all these modders popping out of the woodwork, I know the long-time simmers who've been thru this before know there will always be a market for quality addons, but how it functions and looks will certainly change as much as the look and feel of the new sim has. 😉

Umberto, unless I totally misunderstood, the program that does the extraction, et cetera also has the capability to combine and simplify those small textures automatically should one choose to use it.

As far as I know, they use Blender, and there's two step process, first importing the object in Blender, then optimizing the texture with baking. The 2nd step is optional, and the scenery will work, just it will be very heavy on fps because of the thousands+ materials.
