Should I Upgrade to P3Dv5?

Featured Replies

Hi.  Looking for some feedback in regards to whether you think it's worth it for me to upgrade from P3Dv4.5 to P3Dv5.

I have a 9700K cpu, 2070 super video card, 2560x1440 monitor.

I really like P3Dv4.5.  Performance is great, better than I've ever had actually.  I also have lots of addons, payware and freeware.  I'm pretty content.

I'm really looking for concrete attributes and features of v5 that are noticeably better than v4.

Thanks for your responses.

Dave

I upgraded from FSX to P3DV5. I think most of my comments also apply going from V4.5 to V5.

Pros

most of my add-ons worked great with free updates, this included Just Flight, Carenado and Lionheart Creations and other planes. All the ORBX add-ons also worked ok with free updates.

V5 includes a major update to airports worldwide including getting rid of some airports abandoned long ago and adding new airports. Also modifications to a lot of airports.

V5 has been very stable for me.

Cons

LM decided to include their own vector data, it does need more work, the Canada Arctic is a mess for example. If you have ORBX vector for P3DV4, the update to V5 is free and will fix this issue.

My weather engine had to be upgraded at full price as well a FSUIPC.

MILVIZ planes have still not been updated, and their may be a cost to update.

As you move sliders to the max, you could have GPU memory issues.

Overall, I have been very happy with V5. Please note most of flying has been GA.

Specs: black box thingy with spinning fans, lights and a bunch of wires that go to screens with pretty colours and a keyboard with many keys. The black box thingy also has a push button activated coffee cup holder.

I opted to skip the MS 2020 sim due to the numerous issues when it was released and bought V5 about a month ago. Like you my V4.5 is running well and until V5 has matured it will remain in place. Initially I used similar settings to what I use in 4.5 and just used it in stock form with no addons and I had no obvious issues other than it required lowering the expectations a bit for performance. I added airport scenery, some A2A aircraft and a PMDG product but soon started having CTD issues as others have posted with video card errors. I set the sliders to mid range and that seems to have stopped the CTD. However I have seen random unexplained stuttering with or without the AE option enabled and am trying to determine if it is related to addon software or it is something in V5 that needs a fix. Overall I like this version but at present my 4.5 version is completely stable on the same system and using the same addon software with no issues at all. I would not discourage you from using V5 but be prepared for some experimentation until further updates are issued from LM. I read about a 5.1 version supposedly in the works and I have V3, V4 and now V5 and each required updates along the way to get there. My specs are 8700k, Nvidia 1070 8GB, 32GB ram.

I have v4.5 and it works well and for me I see no reason to move to v5. v5 was released too early (seemed like a beta release) and has had many issues. It might be good to see what the reviews of v5.1 bring and learn of the problems that others will have once it gets released, but if things are good for you in v4.5, I would just enjoy what you have. If 5.1, however, is pristine, then it would be worth asking if the airport fixes and minor eye candy is worth the cost of another license. Only you can be the judge. Unfortunately for me, I would have to at least get a new GPU, so the cost of a new graphics card and the $200 license is not worth it for the minor improvements. P3D 4.5 is a solid platform.

For me V5 has been the best and most stable sim I have ever flown with the best performance! I5 8400 Gtx 2070 32GB ram

Personally I think it's a worthwhile jump, providing you have a GPU which has at least 8Gb, since that's enough of an overhead to allow you to have the graphics up high enough to look good without risking it running out of steam.

Might wanna give this a look. This is my review of V5 where I go over literally every new feature and explain them all. If after you weight that list up and think it will offer an advantage, then you will be able to make an informed decision:

If you are really happy / content, why go through the turmoil of a replacement?

Personally, I went to V5 and like it, but you sound like you are happy with 4.5.  🙂

Yes it’s worth it, but I would wait till 5.1 first.

I'm waiting to upgrade as P3D 4.5 is running great for me. The latest FSLabs A320 has improved performance in 4.5 and all my addons work - some of which are not available in v5 (the PMDG DC6/NGX and Coolsky's DC9/MD88 for example). The 'Flight Simulator Aircraft Dynamics and Navdata' website allows you to update navdata in 4.5 to the latest AIRAC cycle. I think v5 would see improved performance but the new environment does not always look better IMO and the compatibility issues with scenery really put me off upgrading.

I have been flight simming since 1983 and P3D 4.5 is by far the most stable and satisfying flightsim so far, I'm not going to risk moving to what is still effectively a beta version that is priced as a fully fledged package.

Well, i’ve got both installed, and i use v5 for 99% of my flights.

There are several reasons to use v5, but Truesky Is the big one.

so the answer to your question is: yes, upgrade

Thanks for the responses everyone.

I've decided to wait until v5.1 is released before upgrading.

This is a smart approach. I too will wait to see if v5.1 gives enough of an upgrade to compel me to pay $200 for a v5 license and $500-$700 to buy a new graphics card.

Chaps, discussion of pricing of the different versions of P3D is not allowed. As the OP has said he'll wait for v5.1 his question has been answered.
