Sensibly, unless you drastically need a card right now, it makes sense to wait and see what Big Navi looks like and THEN wait a wee bit longer to see what the Nvidia response is and then way up the pros and cons at your particular price point. It is not possible to make an informed decision right now, By Q1 2021 the dust should have settled.
October 6, 20205 yr Actually.....its getting more interesting by the day. I've been in nVidia cards for decades now....always wanted AMD to compete but in the end it was always a wash, hopes dashed that big blue had serious competition in the video card arena. Been watching all the videos out there from Gamers Nexus, Jay 50cent, etc...and they are not necessarily declaring the race over with Big Navi just yet. In fact...I'd be willing to bet that there is some super-secret NDA going on....they HAVE the 6000 series cards already and benchmarking them.... and will be ready to drop reviews on day 1 release like they did with the 3080 (Those vids take a while to professionally produce I've heard). Sooooo....if AMD is smart and think (or know) they have a card that will compete THIS TIME....I'm struggling along with my ancient Titan (Maxwell), and not dropping a penny on a video card until I see where this goes. Call me the ultimate optimist, but if I have choices, and NVidia has "Actual" competition this time (price/performance, total vram, Cuda Cores, etc.....EDIT: And here's an important one: AVAILIBILITY!)...we may ALL benefit from this. 🙂 @Glenn Fitzpatrick we were posting about the same time...and saying pretty much the same thing.....patience......wait to see what shakes out of the red tree! October 7, 20205 yr I used to use AMD CPU's and graphics cards, but I suffered with the dreaded AMD water corruption bug in FSX. This was when, after a short period in the sim, the water would turn to zig-zag lines, then the whole screen, and sometimes even a CTD to follow. Normally though you had to hard reset the PC in any case as the screen was completely corrupt. I bought the next two new series AMD graphics cards even after that, hoping that it was a hardware issue and that the 'new cores' or new technology would fix it. I wasted hundreds of pounds and the response from AMD to my communications was either nothing, or the standard 'update your drivers' response, which never fixed it. Apparently, they were well aware of this issue in FSX but were not bothered to attempt to fix it. I believe IIRC, some of my first contact on these forums revolved around this issue, as I looked for help, and people said 'just switch to NVidia, as they just work in FSX'. I did (a 970 card), and it solved all of my problems. I ended up selling the AMD cards on Ebay for a fraction of their value. So I cannot say that I would never buy an AMD card again, but I wasn't too impressed, and the whole thing has left me a bit anti-AMD now. I would love an NVidia 3080 with the 20 GB of VRAM, but I will wait for it to calm down first. When they actually get into stock in the UK 🙄 and availability is good, I will look for a deal. October 7, 20205 yr I noticed in the video, the comparison is done in 4K resolution. It will be quite a while before and if I'll ever go to 4K. 4K is really nice, but I don't know if I'll ever get to that point. I'm still on 1080p at the moment and all is well in my world - even with my dated GTX 1070 and i5 6600K. I run the game on High-End and get mid thirties most of the time flying where I like to fly, but obviously around KLAX my frame rates drop considerably. I will say tho that I flew around Tokyo with frame rates in the mid thirties - which I enjoyed very much. Given how much better flying around Tokyo was vs LAX, I it would seem LAX can use some optimization. Nevertheless, it is interesting to see the comparison between the AMD and Nvidia cards. I also noticed the AMDs ran much cooler. I assume these cards are off the shelf? Is the AMD 6000 version supposed to be their version of the 3080 or is the 5700 it's equivalent? For example, Asobo acknowledged that they messed up the LOD system on the last patch. This gave everyone a FPS boost at the expense of LOD. Once they fix that, you will very likely have to give a little back... or scale your settings back down. Lets see what their Navi can do but my money is on Nvidia and Intel, not AMD. I've played Flight Simulator X with three ATi/AMD GPUs from wildly different architectures and never had an issue. In fact, I noticed that anti-aliasing looked worse when I switched to NVIDIA, something that I never found a solution for.

My first NVidia was a 970, so it was for the generations before that - a good few years ago. Strange you didn't have the problem. I was told it was widespread and FSX users only ever bought NVidia afterwards due to the issues. Edited October 7, 20205 yr by bobcat999 Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind). October 7, 20205 yr Well my GTX 1070 locked @30, with most settings in ultra handles MSFS quite well with about 25% headroom left, so far I have not seen vram being maxed either. I rather wait until these new beasts come down in price, $700 for a 3080 is way beyond my budget. My 1080Ti is on the edge to hold 30 fps at 1440 (medium/high), and I would really like to go for 4k, as I have had a 4k monitor for a few years but not had the opportunity to see it shine yet! 🙂 Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind). And when MSFS goes to DX12 it will be interesting to see how much VRAM will play a part in performance. Hopefully by then the 20G VRAM cards will come down in price a little! Chris Camp

But you know what it's like; we tend to push the budget a little if it related to a thing we really like doing, and sometimes get the credit card out! We all have our different limits I suppose. For me, a 3080 would be a significant purchase, but if you work hard all day, you sometimes need a little enjoyment and should treat yourself (while trying to avoid getting ripped off of course). 🙂 Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).
