I thought the idea of doing this rather than just typing in the username is that is allows Avsim (or any other program) to send a notification to the user that they have been mentioned in a post....otherwise how would they know and be able to respond.  But what do I know....I don't use Twitter or Instagram, etc.  Thanks for brining this up @Ron Attwood

I wasn't being entirely 'funny', it really is an itch that needed scratching. So you were right.

Oh he's very adept, it's just that he doesn't want to adapt!

I bet I'm not alone in being slightly irritated by the @whoever_77 thing. Why? What does it signify? Is it a smart phone thing? Maybe a Twitter or Facelook thing. I don't know about the hundred or so other 'apps' where 'People shall talk cr4p unto people' ***

I'll wait patiently for something that irritates/annoys/irks/upsets you.

It wont be long I suspect. 🙂

If anyone is actually curious about the origin, rather than just wanting to gripe about it (not that there's anything wrong with that), the short answer is that it has long been internet shorthand to indicate that a particular comment was addressed "@" someone.

However, its pervasive usage as an actual semantic indicator for a username is largely an outcome of its heavy use on Twitter, where it was first symbolic, then became a fully supported feature of the system as a way of "tagging" someone.

And it grew from there.

This is a good page if you want to read even more history than that:  https://qz.com/135149/the-first-ever-hashtag-reply-and-retweet-as-twitter-users-invented-them/

And yet, here we are participating in "social" media.

Definition of social media

: forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)

The "dictionary" definition of a word or term is often vastly different from the word or term's common usage. I was referring to the latter, not the former. I'll bet not one person in a thousand would think of this forum as "social media".

If it's not social media, then I'd like to know what is. Think your 1 in 1000 stats might be a little orff old boy.
