November 3, 20205 yr I thought the idea of doing this rather than just typing in the username is that is allows Avsim (or any other program) to send a notification to the user that they have been mentioned in a post....otherwise how would they know and be able to respond. November 3, 20205 yr If anyone is actually curious about the origin, rather than just wanting to gripe about it (not that there's anything wrong with that), the short answer is that it has long been internet shorthand to indicate that a particular comment was addressed "@" someone. However, its pervasive usage as an actual semantic indicator for a username is largely an outcome of its heavy use on Twitter, where it was first symbolic, then became a fully supported feature of the system as a way of "tagging" someone. And it grew from there.
