Savage Carbon: a new STOL champion

Featured Replies

This popped up on the official forum two days ago and I had a lot of fun with it over the weekend.   It's a modified version of the Savage Cub that shaves weight with a carbon frame and replaces the Rotax 912S with a 915is, netting an extra 41HP.   It also improves the brakes and moves the undercarriage forward to allow sharper stops with less of a tendency to nose over.  It's not a "real" model, but it's a perfectly credible one that's not dissimilar to various custom STOL planes that already exist.

It's also an absolute blast to fly.

Here's a sneak peak at the 5 super-colorful new liveries it comes with, too:

And this is the impossible butte I dropped it on top of yesterday, and then took off from uphill in the remaining distance you see there.

For some reason, this airplane starts up with the handbrake on, for me.

I have to use the keyboard shortcut to turn it off.

Look at the toebrakes in the cockpit and verify that they move freely.. 🙂

Or, you end up on your nose...

Yeah, in the latest version they added a parking brake, but since it's not modeled in the cockpit you have to use a key or controller bind for it.   I was thankful for it when I parked on that slope for a while.  😄

Once again the community creating content that is really fun!

You can actually get a 180hp ECI Titan 340 in Shock Ultras and Savage Cubs, though the engine will likely cost you more than the entire rest of the airframe (Zlin list it as a € 49,900 ($US58,000) upgrade on the ultra):

That should give even more HP than the 915 .

By the way with all those liveries expect to get a LOT of Savage appearing as AI aircraft at airports (unless you mod a few of the liveries to not be available for AI) as the game seems to think every livery is a new aircraft

Planning to give this a try tonight.  I really enjoy the slowwwwwww landings with the Shock Ultra, so I'm looking forward to it.

Slightly off topic question - if you use a modded default aircraft and do a landing challenge to you get the modded performance in the challenge ?

Took this for a spin around Vermont tonight, plenty of power, trims out nice, well behaved during STOL landings & takeoffs (if anything it could probably use a bit more P-factor effects, didn't take much rudder work to keep it under control), love the bright-colored liveries. Well thought out in terms of what an actual custom STOL aircraft might be like.

Really fun to cruise around in and land in some farmer's fields, faster than the Savage Cub or the Shock Ultra (~110 kts cruise) and better at STOL than the X-Cub (~1/2 the empty weight).

@kaosfere

Rob, as an old Champ driver, I'm loving this... lots more basic than the Xcub and she flies quite well.  I posted a few of my thoughts on the developer's page.

I DO like simple for just relaxing and scenery watching, and when I want to play- she's got the power and loading to do that as well!

Appreciate the find.

yay. this is a nice one.

It appears that the link for this has changed for some reason.  Perhaps because the title was edited?   (It would be silly for Discourse to change the URL if the title of a topic is edited, but perhaps something else is going on.)

At any rate, here's a current functional link for it so more people can enjoy this beauty.

There also seems to be a nice looking update inbound:

Quote

Coming in the next update v1.0.3 (end of this week or earlier):

  • A refined simulation of the oil temperature. It will now go into yellow followed by red if you rev the engine at 5800 for too long.
  • You’ll also get at least one new livery, maybe more.
  • CG setup includes an important fix too…I spotted the engine being positioned forward too much by 20cm (oops!) … which does not sound like much but has a major impact on braking especially (resulting into those easy nose-dips). So nose dips will be harder to get, and brakes have been improved further. You’ll still need to apply full back pressure on the stick during braking, but hey…this is a taildragger.
  • Am also playing with an entirely redone Rotax 915iS engine simulation, but that may or may not make it in the next release…we’ll see. There are limitations on what we can do with engines right now, and one of them is get the correct Kw/Hp/Torque for each RPM. It’s a pain to configure and requires hours and hours of tweaking and trying. But I’ll get her as close and realistic as I can.

The oil temp simulation will be welcome, for sure.  One thing I was slightly saddened by was that I could run the engine to the redline continually without seeing any apparent side effects.

... and she’s received yet another update... I am thrilled with this developer, who despite not being a pilot, loves aviation AND HAS SUPERB PROGRAMMING ABILITY unlike me.

Can’t wait to fly her now!

If you want GREAT Bush/Back Country/Sightseeing flying... GRAB THIS MOD!  Just flew Beta 5 with @Steve Dra and he took me somewhere I have always wanted to go... never thought we'd get THIS CLOSE!  That's the top of Vesuvius... probably not going to make the local Carabinieri happy... but with that third notch of flap and the constantly improving FDE... it was a piece of cake!  Check it out- it's well worth the effort- promise!

Its a WHOLE DIFFERENT ANIMAL than the XCub he flew, and they are both great, but for plonking down on a postage stamp, this one’s lighter wing loading and power to weight ratio SHINES!
