Any potential fixes incoming for "morphing" mountains?

Featured Replies

I had a look around here, at FS forum and at the official buglist, etc, but couldn't see anything specific about terrain LOD issues. Sorry if this is a well worn subject but I just haven't spotted anything in a while.

A lot of people on FS forum are talking about LOD problems with respect to trees and buildings, specifically melted building and photogrammetry issues. But no one seems to be mentioning the "morphing" mountains that I am seeing since the USA update. Terrain elevations adjusting and changing withing 1/2 mile of the aircraft. Its most noticeable in places like the Grand Canyon.

This for me is the most "jarring" visual issue since the update. Along with the coastline glitch, the Gulf Island near where I live, look hilarious! (that one does seem to be mentioned in the official buglist so I'm not as concerned). Both seem to be elevation related and I'm not seeing anyone discussing either of these much. Has anyone seen or heard anything?

Again, sorry, not bitchn, just really curious. Thx

I have noticed this as well since the USA update.  The newer higher resolution terrain mesh seems to pop in at a relatively close view distance, resulting in the morphing/popping mountains you describe.

In another thread a scenery developer mentioned that the sim seems to run realtime processing algorithms to correct errors in the more detailed mesh.  Perhaps because of this, it can only draw in a limited areas.

That's interesting. I haven't seen that before. Makes sense to what I'm seeing too. Thank you. I'll see if I can hunt down that thread. Thx

This used to be a massive thing in P3D that was never fixed. I too see it in MSFS sometimes, however it doesn’t appear to be as bad

I also noticed this and I wrote a topic about this. It doesn't only happen in the US, I saw it in France too.

Noticed it too since the update, I thought it was my mind playing tricks on me and that it was there all along.

I have to say that it does bother me. I would rather have lower-resolution mesh but none of the morphing, particularly so close to the mountains.

They really need to extend the range of the highest LOD. That would probably solve the problem.

Well, if the new Xbox is going to use the same MSFS photogrammy servers/real-time processing algorithms I don't see how the LOD/Morphing can be extended or improved without causing FPS issues on that system!  Won't matter if we all have the best processors and 3090ti cards if they run the same processing algorithms and server side loading of LOD based on the hardware and internet connectivity of the X-Box.

I haven't heard if they are going to run two separate server side, AI photogrammy programs and servers for PC and X-Box but I doubt it!

I am 100% confident that this did NOT occur prior to the USA update. Prior to the update, I could fly over any mountains at around 5-10000 ft and see as far as the horizon with zero "morphing", for lack of a better word. Now if I look out of the side window of the plane, I can watch the mountains pop up and down directly below the plane. No settings changes have any effect. Its driving me crazy! haha

I think it may be linked to the morphing coastlines as well - they look terrible from a distance now.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

I see stuff popping in and textures morphing all the time. i just figure it is my internet. We will see what this Tuesdays update brings if anything.

Been going on for a lot longer than the USA update. Just search the forum for morphing or spikes and you will see a long list of threads on the issues.

I can only speak for myself but, this is absolutely new to this latest build. The reason I say that is that I do the exact same 6 flights after every new update just to get a reference/baseline of what's changed, for better or for worse.

I use the trusty stock Cessna 152, with the same settings and with hardware & software monitoring running.

1- Land at LAX and YVR

2- Fly up the Grand Canyon toward Hoover Dam then over the Vegas Strip

3- Fly a specific route around the Bahamas

4- Fly from Victoria to Seattle at low level

5- Fly a specific route over Mt. Hood in Oregon

This mountain "morphing" and the coastline "glitch" is new. I am getting older ..so I may be mistaken and going a little crazy, but I'm very confident that I have not seen this happen before. Its very jarring and ruins the experience for me personally.

I noticed this too and this is new, for Me at least....I take off from Burbank and fly toward downtown Los Angeles and chunks of the Hollywood hills jump up and down and all around very close to where I’m flying (and my nice freeware Hollywood sign add on no longer works until you’re right on top of it or looking at it from just the right angle.

Again I really am starting to believe this is an Xbox preparation photogrammy server nerf!
