Just some encouragement for those out there having troubles. It can be done!

VR in MSFS is OK, but let's not get carried away now, Devon. "VR in MSFS is ABSOLUTELY UNBELIEVABLE"? Really??? Perhaps would a better title would be: "If you can get it working despite the mass of BUGS, VR in MSFS is actually QUITE COOL...if you've got a Nvidia 30XX video card". Let me expand on this a little further.

Firstly, the people who are amazed by the immersion of sitting in a cockpit in VR have been some how missing out on flying in VR in AF FS2, DCS, IL-2, X-plane and P3D for the past 6+ years or so. Guys, it's 2020, VR for flightsim is not remotely new tech.

Secondly, let's be honest here - MSFS's VR implementation is currently a buggy mess. The performance is pretty awful, even with $2000 video cards and Intels'latest and greatest CPU. If you want your Oculus HMD to work, there's a good chance that you'll need to hack the registry. And then you'll still have black artefacts blocking your view, or everything will be yellow. It's a substandard release, and Asobo should have done some better beta testing before letting this out into the wild.

The performance issues are also not going away any time soon. You need to drop your resolution, turn off half of the eye candy and fly a simple plane in the middle of nowhere to get truly smooth flight. And if you want to use your motion controllers to interact with the cockpit - bad luck.

So is it worth flying? I'd definitely say yes, despite all the issues. I sat up from 1am until dawn this morning, testing things out (am at work feeling sleepy atm). Flying a simple aircraft like one of the cubs is great, with smooth flight being possible. Airliners are certainly not smooth, but cruising through the clouds is a lot of fun. Addon airports in big cities in poor weather? No, MSFS VR is not ready for that yet.

So is flying in VR in general a good thing in flight sims? Absolutely - duh. Should you choose MSFS for your VR flying? You do need a beast of a machine, but the world that Asobo has created is honestly pretty cool, and the lighting effects and clouds look beautiful at times.

I'll definitely not be throwing away the other sims for VR flying, but I can definitely see myself spending a lot of time exploring Asobo's version of the world over the coming months.

Happy Christmas all!

Oz

Sorry, but no, you're wrong.

I don't have a system like you described and VR performs more than adequaltly on my PC with most of the eye candy turned up to very pleasing levels.

Wrong...I am an X-Planer and I find performance in MSFS to be a big improvement over it.

Oz,

you have had bad luck getting the MFS VR going (you may have to reinstall the Oculus software),

i woke up at 2:30am Australian time - saw the update was released,

basically, updated my Steam Standard version & put on Rift S,

it worked, but with the black frames,

quick check of what to do - only updated to Oculus Public Beta version - sweet flying,

i have all the sims for VR - & never have i had the feeling of flight as this morning with MFS VR - in stock Bonanza (i removed all aircraft mods before updating),

Asobo said it - 'The Sky is Calling' - & frankly, that is exactly what i felt in the Rift S, with High/Ultra settings,

what blew me away is - the VR was super smooth - i was gobsmacked!

I‘m completely new to VR simming, so I can‘t say anything about VR in other sims. But what I can say is that I‘m blown away. Being in the cockpit of the c172 for the first time was overwhelming. When I first took of I had to laugh out loud. It felt so real. It was a physical sensation, as if I could feel the forces. I knew it would be a great experience, but this exceeded all expectations. Performance is pretty good with my settings, no stutters, nothing, at least in the c172. Today I‘ll check out some other aircraft and more demanding places to see how far I can go with my settings. Anyway, I‘m having a blast.

Lol, don't be offended if I point out MSFS's VR shortcomings. People are way too quick to leap to defend this sim. If you don't believe me about the bugs, look at Asobo's list of "known issues", or the comments in other threads here and on the MSFS forums.

I'm lucky to have a wide range of headsets to choose from, so I've got it flying no problem, and can troubleshoot my Oculi when I'm in the mood. But quite a few are stuck without usable VR.

The performance is poor given the hardware we are running on. Who here is honestly getting a consistent 45 FPS? I think I'm getting half that in the 787, whereas 45 FPS is more or less achievable in other sims with much more complex airliners (With systems that actually work).

As I said, I'm enjoying MSFS VR. It's not revolutionary if you've got 100's of hours of VR time in other sims, but would better be described as evolutionary. If you want to explore the world without paying a lot of money for addons (or spending the time making ortho yourself), then this is the sim. If you like volumetric clouds, this is one of the better choices. The underlying platform is still very limited in many ways (systems, aircraft choice, performance), but having VR as an option is a massive step forward.

"performs more than adequalty", perhaps if your standards are very low.

Can you get a stable 45 FPS in VR mode in one of the airliners? Sorry, no, you can't. Can you get this over a major city in poor weather? Unlikely.

People are using RTX 3090s and still getting frame rates in the 20s. That would be laughable in any other genre of game.

Rob,

Is this one good enough for a beginner? I want black.

I‘m not offended at all (if you were referring to me). I just described how I was feeling during my first ever vr flight. I‘ve just done a first full flight in the a320 and performance with the same settings were rather poor and the dials were very blurry. Still a cool experience but nothing compared to the smaller aircraft. I guess I‘ll have to do some tweaking or wait for further optimisation. I‘ll certainly try out Xplane. I still have it on my HD with over a TB of addons and orthos.

I would be more happy and start to think about the MSFS VR capabilities only if Asobo fixes: (1) water in coastlines going uphill, (2) AP behavior in all aircraft, including those that were modified in this latest update, (3) FMC functionality in general, (4) performance issues introduced after Update 7 still present (micro pauses, stutters), (5) and now the terrain spikes near some lakes. To me, Asobo is still paying too much attention to eye-candy features instead of concentrating in the most important parts of the sim that apparently remain or are either getting worse after each update.

First things first.

Cheers, Ed

Two "WOW!" moments to speak of:

1 - Last Night quickly jumped in the 747 from JFK to a NYC shortly after sunset, breathtaking simply put!

2 - Swiss Alps up the Valley to the mighty Matterhorn, was a wonderfully Epic sight until I got closer and realised the "mod" doesn't blend with the surrounding area at all so if you come up from the Valley you can see underneath it 🤦‍♂️so that ruined the initial lovely moment, from up high all is fine.

Saitek X45 HOTAS - Saitek Pro Rudder Pedals - Logitech Flight Yoke - Homemade 3 Button & 8-directional Joystick Box, SNES Controller (used as a Button Box - Additional USB Numpad (used as a Button Box)

instead of seeing inop, i'd love to reach out with my VR controller and tweak every 747 dial and have it work as it should, like in X-plane (well maybe nearly all the dials) 😁

No, I wasn't referring to you Shack. You'll remember in the other thread I told you you'd like VR. See, it's pretty cool, isn't it?

I'm just throwing a dose of realism into the mix as the thread title here was a bit OTT. Just trying to restore some balance to the universe!

I'm flying MSFS VR again tonight. I'm sure I'll be back to P3D and DCS at some stage, but right now this is the new, shiny toy. 🙂
