MSFS2020 Satellite scenery

Featured Replies

I love the satellite scenery in FS2020, however does anyone know if this will be updated. My home airport is already outdated as the second runway is now built and operational at YBBN. However in the game the scenery is taken from when the runway is still being build and alot of sand where the runway is now located. Does any one know if the scenery will get updated?

It’s updated frequently, but they don’t say when and where. I’ve noticed updates in some places (South America for example). Also, on the World Updates they usually bring new and better imagery to the countries/regions they are updating.

I have noticed also updates on Bing aren’t automatically brought to the sim. I’ve seen places where Bing has updated but the sim is still showing older imagery.

Yeah. Was wondering this myself.

In Philadelphia the Comcast Technology Center (a 1,121ft 60 story skyscraper) was completed in 2018 (started in 2014) yet in game it's not even so much as under construction and still a parking lot. Kinda weird looking at your home city and seeing a giant piece of infrastructure that is 3 years old  missing.

I think before Asobo can update the satellite areas in MSFS, they have to go through Blackshark AI first.  Remember, Blackshark AI will go through the satellite & photogrammetry data, and create 3D objects based off of it.  So even if an area has been updated in Bing, until this updated area has gone through processing by Blackshark AI, I doubt that the updated area will appear in game.

In any case, if the area isn't updated even in Bing, it probably won't be updated in game. So check Bing first.  If it's updated in Bing, it may make it into the game but at a later date (keyword here is "may").  If it's not updated even in Bing, then I doubt it will make it into the game because it's Bing first, MSFS second.

Thanks for the info, although I wish they would say when and where.

I usually stick to places I know has good satellite imagery, but if they suddenly announced some region / area had been updated on the weekly dev blog I would definitely check it out.

A little correction here, they can update areas with imagery/photogrammetry not on Bing yet, they do it for the World Updates.

Oh nice.  But they only do it for World Update areas though, right?  Meaning, for the last patch, they would only do it for the Noridics countries in Europe. This means everywhere else outside the "World Update" countries will probably rely on Bing.

I think the adjustments/improvements to Bing imagery have to be vetted and authorised manually before they are allowed into the sim, as they have found that it can disrupt some imagery, such as the watermasks.

If these were simply allowed into the sim without vetting, you would see all of the reflections on the waves / water spoiling them again.  The watermasks currently have to be manually edited for this, that is why they take so long to complete.

As far as I know, yes. They only use other than Bing imagery within the World Updates, but I could be wrong.

your lucky, Darwin imagery is over 10yrs old with bing, half of the current suburbs dont even exist and the titles are mixed matched with different colours and season, the ground is covered in terrain spikes, places like australia are low detail, i did a flight from YPDN to WARR and there was no imagery just black terrain in some areas.

Strange -- I have just done flights in the Darwin area and saw no terrain spikes or terrain problems whatsoever. Not being from that area, I don't know about the suburbs, but it all looked great to me.

Are you sure that you fly with Online Functionality and Bing Data World Graphics ON  ? like Cobalt I don't see anything specially bad there.

i will post some pics when i have the time, when you notice it sticks in your head, it looks like older lower res imagery mix with slightly new imagery, we only have 2 seasons here its either brown or green and the change between the two is quite visible and is measured in days

yep online maps is on 24/7, the land tiles match the same with the bing maps webpage online which also are very dated and mixed for the area. like fsx, p3d with 3rd party unless you know the area your only limited to whats depicted and most times many assume thats is how it is in real life. however there is a significant difference between google and bing map details for my area since the US marines moved in.

not so much of a good comparison as google maps improve quality when you zoom in further but you can see the colour changes in the terrian and there are muplite areas within short range of the city and low res imagery with the older title
