MSFS and Ram

Featured Replies

I'm supposed to be getting 32gb ram on 2 sticks today replacing my 16gb.  I'll post what differences I notice.

I was thinking about this, but I look at my 16GB Ram usage when I am running MSFS , and it averages around 65%, so I think for me it would not be necessary,

I suspect MFS will use whatever RAM you give it, to a point. Previously opinions and feedback from others led me to believe 32 GB was the ideal amount of RAM for MFS, but Asobo's much touted big update at the end of July purports to more than halve the memory footprint of the game so the advantages of that additional 16 GB RAM may be shortlived.

I can't say I noticed any major differences upgrading 16 GB to 32 GB.  Maybe seemed a bit smoother, but that was probably a placebo effect.

I'm mainly interested in loading up larger airports which cause my system to choke right now.

I get major stutters when heading towards big hubs - and I have 32GB's.

I wouldn't say its a waste of money getting 32GB's now, but SU5 looks promising and may negate any advantages there might have been using it.

those stutters have nothing to do with ram, its the streaming of lotsa data.

but if you run 4k 64 might still benefit somewhat.

RAM usage for me us sometimes 27-28 GB, but apparently the update coming with WU5 will improve performance and lower RAM usage to about half that.

I went from 16 GB to 24 GB of RAM.  The main difference is, MSFS eats up more RAM if it your system more RAM.  But I honestly don't notice the difference in performance between 16 GB and 24 GB of RAM.

The reason I got 24 GB of RAM is because I didn't want to close my other applications when I play MSFS.  I can keep all my browsers and other applications open when I run MSFS on 24 GB of RAM.  With 16 GB, I had to close all my applications or else I could run out of memory with MSFS running.  But if I closed all my applications on 16 GB of RAM, it seems to run the same as 24 GB of RAM.

At least for my system, there is no performance difference with 16 GB or 24 GB of RAM.  Seems to run the same to me.  24 GB of RAM just allows me to be more lazy and keep my applications open when I play MSFS.

Does the RAM still work in dual-channel when you use three sticks for 24 GB total?

Not sure.  I'd have to dig around my motherboard's manual but that would take time.  I am using a 16 GB stick + 8 GB stick, on the only 2 RAM slots available on my motherboard.

Alright, then you're definitely not using dual channel, because both sticks are different capacity. I don't even understand how anyone would build a system with just one stick of RAM and give up on the performance boost from dual channel. Was this a prebuilt system?

The additional 16gb of ram (total 32 now) makes a huge difference on my system.  I can load Chicago O'Hare now and fly smoothly whereas with only 16gb ram it was choking my computer.  Big Big difference here.

That's interesting.  I just checked the ASUS manual and it says: "You may install varying memory sizes in channel A and B. The system maps the total size of the lower-sized channel for the dual channel configuration. Any excess memory from the higher-sized channel is the mapped for single channel operation."

According to this wording from ASUS, it is dual channel for the first 8 GB of the 16 GB RAM, and the second 8 GB RAM stick.  Then the remaining 8 GB of the 16 GB stick is single channel.

This is pretty much consistent with this Quora answer as well: https://www.quora.com/Is-it-worth-it-to-buy-a-16GB-RAM-upgrade-and-lose-the-dual-channel-benefits-or-should-I-just-buy-a-matching-8GB/answer/George-Wright-34?ch=10&share=f886c5ce

And the same conclusion with this Reddit thread:

So at least for Asus motherboards like mine, 16 GB stick + 8 GB RAM stick gives dual channel for 16 GB, and single channel for the remaining 8 GB

I never said it was, in fact if you check my post history you will find I’ve mentioned the injection of data being the cause of stutters on more than one occasion 👍
