Why the high GPU Temps?

Featured Replies

Can anyone explain why my GPU temps go from about 33C to the mid-60's when the sim has only opened as far as the main menu? There are basically no animations even running yet.

No idea but you’ll want to cap FPS to something like 60 if you haven’t already. High FPS = high heat.

as it will be hitting really high fps. lock your fps down to 30 and it will help

I recently built an almost new pc to run MFS and as soon as possible XPNG...

I used the win 10 game optimization menu and set it to the best performance.

While my cpu changed from a rather old i5 2500 to a Ryzen 5600X, the gpu is still the same old gtx 960.

As I loaded the sim I started listening to the fans spinning wildly... the temps were certainly way above anything I had experienced before with my old rig.

Alec helped me understanding the limiting factor on my install was now the GPU, and MFS was pushing it to the limits.

I did this:

1) enabled VSync in game menu;

2) set max fps to 30 in game menu;

later I also set the windows game optimization to "let windows decide", and temps got down to acceptable values.

Strange. Since SU5 my GPU has been running quite cool (in the 60s) whilst my CPU has been running in the high 80s/low 90s.  I found locking at 30 fps kept the temps down a bit.

How about your CPU Bob?

Well, you guys were right. I turned Win 10 Game Mode back on, Monitor had been set to 120 HZ at 60 FPS in game settings with VSYNC ON. I Locked FR down at 20 FPS instead, with monitor remaining on 120. Within the next 5-10 minutes, with MSFS still on the Main Menu and Options pages, the temps dropped from mid-60's down into the 40's. Never realized FR could have that much impact on temps. Makes you conscious of the fact that chasing high FPS comes at a cost. Still haven't attempted a flight since the latest updates. Have made suggested changes in cockpit accessibility settings in hopes of regaining lost controls, and also anxious to see if any of my coding in Stream Deck and Xtouch Mini devices has been restored.

There appear to be 2 completely different phases to launching MSFS 2020....

When you start it up.. it goes into a pre loader program to check whether there are updates...  this program is NOT affected by either the In-Game frame limiter, or setting your NVIDEA or AMD gaming limits to 30 or so...

Once the installer has finished checking it goes into the main MSFS where all the frame limiting comes into play.

Now.. setting windows to run at 30fps and MSFS to run at 30 FPS (for example )    doesn't include this checking for updates stage  and you will still get the whole system running away like crazy whilst checking for updates or updating.

I have set windows to 30FPS and MSFS to 40 FPS  and both those hold true..  but checking for updates or actually downloading an update runs at 600FPS with max GPU usage and just gets warmer and warmer...

I have no idea why this is the case, but I reported this to Zendesk shortly after launch and it's still there.  If there are big updates and its slow downloading I sometimes have to stop the update a few times and restart it to cool the machine down again. 😞

My temps remained high even when I was at what I'm calling the main menu - where you choose your activity or set up a flight. They did not begin to go down until I went into the Options and made settings changes, and saved them. They started to go down within the first minute after that. I have not yet tested any of this in game. Hopefully some time today.

What I don't understand is why the vram usage is incredible low, even with higher settings.  My GTX 1080 ti shows like 4/11 GB at most.  Are others seeing similar results?

Yeah temps...I wasn't prepared for the heat generated by my 3090. In the winter, yeah. Bring on the heat. But now. August in Texas. I literally only play high-end stuff in the mornings.

I had to redo my case fans and added a side dumper fan. My point? Just that these new cards are monsters and can generate a huge heat load. That's an additional cost with these cards I didn't really consider.

At 4k and locked at 60 (never seen 60 but it tries) and mostly on ultra settings, I generally saw a GPU temp of 80-83 in the previous version, but much less in this new version. Don't have a number (don't remember) but I DO remember it was much less.

Just had a 15 minute test flight. C172 G1000. First since I've had the latest updates. As I booted up MSFS my temps were about 34C. By the time I got to the Welcome screen I was showing 43. Went up just a few degrees as I prepped my flight out of my old field, 0E0 Moriarty NM. Live WX. Made a short outbound flight, barely managing 200 ft/min climb, with the local temps almost 90 degrees F. at 6200 MSL. About the performance I would expect to see from a 172 here in these conditions. Hooray, Hooray, My peripheral controls had re-appeared. And functions like trim were back. Functions on my Stream Deck and Xtouch were also back. I re-entered the pattern and landed. A gigantic fuel truck (which has never existed at this field) met me on the ramp and waited for me to park. The ramp boy (also never seen at this field) guided me to my parking spot and signaled me to shut down. My GPU temp was 64C, and that's as high as it went during the entire flight. I must admit, everything looked and worked great with my new settings. I wasn't running a frame counter, but assumed from my settings that I would be in the 30-40 FPS range. No complaints there. I had a couple of brief twitches while in flight. That was about it (I had deleted the cache saved for this area). Overnight I had gone from a completely unusable program to one that seemed to be working perfectly. Good job Asobo! And thanks for help in getting my temps under control.
