Clouds

Oh so nice that we're discussing the nuances of clouds. Beats all the constant threads we used to have on FSX about the word not allowed blurries and popping and stutters and screen tearing and CTDs'. But here we are looking for and being promised even more in clouds that will 'blow your mind'.

Notwithstanding the SU5 hotfix issues (does SU stand for Stuff UP by the way?) which I get the impression many are now happy with, this sim is rocking.

FWIW I think the clouds look pretty stunning as a default offering but I imagine a third party weather engine like REX could do wonders.  So long as it doesn't affect performance and doesn't cost an arm and leg.  I wonder what Asobo have up their sleeve?

Bring on more cloud discussions 🙂

Uhm ... more precisely this is the clouds thread, so we are talking about clouds.

There is a thread on stutters, pauses (newly introduced by SU5 for most of us), shimmering, LOD, CTD's (also got worse with SU5). Not to mention what some third party devs think of the SDK.

It doesn't look as a sim that is rocking to me.

I think the clouds are pretty good, even after the update, especially when compared to x-plane 11.  Remember those?

Easy win ....

it is obvious that the clouds must be reworked (shapes and colors)
there is also the fact of crossing the clouds which is not very realistic

Oh. is that right. Then you never used FSX or FS9?  Never said it was perfect but I stand by my decision. This sim rocks. 🙂

No. No, Mav, this is not a good idea.

Sorry Goose, but it's time to buzz the tower!

Boeing Thrustmaster TCA Yoke, Honeycomb Bravo Throttle Quadrant, Turtle Beach Velocity One Rudder Pedals.

The clouds look realistic from afar.  Up close they lack definition.  They are also too dark most of the time....  like volcanic ash as someone said.

I used FS2. MSFS is better than FS2 - 9 - X. Yes.

But if you say that a software that was pretty stable (and beautiful) one month ago and then was downgraded to lesser visuals and worse stability rocks, we have different views about software development.

If my team develops something in this way, none of our customers will say that it rocks. More probably they will be pretty crossed.

Different opinions, ok.

In all these pictures you guys are posting, the clouds don’t look grainy at all. My clouds have that weird graininess to them and when you fly close by them, the edges are pixelated and look like complete garbage. How come everyone else’s look super nice and fluffy smooth?

Different light angles, different time of day, different season. Sometimes they look good, some other times they don't. Admittedly, volumetric clouds are hard stuff, and take a lot of resources with all the light effects. What we see in reality is the result of an incredible complexity: multiple reflections and refractions. Not easy to do in a desktop sim.

Is anyone still disappointed with the clouds with all the latest hot fixes?  I just did my first couple flights after the updates and the clouds look horrible.  I thought they fixed this?

i went back to P3Dv4/5 with REX SKYFORCE/Active Sky plus XP11 until MSFS gets more love👍  right now my p3d looks better............oh my how things quickly change in 1 week, i'm not too happy right now with clouds and atc bugs 😞

Have same issue which was exacerbated in HDR in HIGH...  Are you using using HIGH or ULTRA? SDR or HDR?

It's because on screenshots the forum shrinks them, making them look better.  When you're in sim - there's plenty of those pixelated areas and super fast morphing clouds.  I've definitely had awesome moments where I'm thinking "yes this looks like real life" but also, "yikes these dark puffs really need work."  They look great and awful at times, depending on angles/lighting etc.

By the same token the smallest screen you can be happy with at your ergonomic optimal viewing distance should be the smallest possible.  I wonder how close people are to the big TV screens.

Yep I am also seeing the high alt clouds like that....  wonder if Asobo is attempting some sort of cirrus cloud?

In the pre SU5 twitch stream for Q and A they had said that they were working on "something really awesome" when it came to high clouds and cirrus type clouds when they were talking about improved weather.  But.... they did not specify if it was for SU5 or a later update.  I believe it was for a later update.  Obviously,  but it would be great to get rid of these wierd blurry mine craft clouds. I believe this was implemented in SU4. Before this they just used thin cumumlus/stratus looking clouds.

Hello.   I don't post hardly at all, but here is how I sum up the current state of the clouds...

In their current state the clouds are far better than any sim before this one all the way back to the beginning (yes, I'm that old too...lol).

However, again in their current state, they are degraded (still nice) from a level that we have experienced already in this sim.   We've seen some evolutions of the clouds since this sim was released.   It started out seemingly very good quality in almost all respects, then degraded during an update with blurriness, pixellation, etc, then got very good quality again in an update later and now has degraded again with the most recent update.

So, while I am loving volumetric clouds even in their current state because we've never had it before, I know that they can and have been better in this sim than they are right now.   Of course subjectivity comes into play for everyone and that is to be respected.   I'm sure like we experienced the first time the clouds degraded, that in a future update we will once again see them restored to their majestic self.

Take care.  See you all at the local airport cafe!
