Might help with some CTDs - Nvidia driver update

Featured Replies

Hi,

I installed the new NVDIA driver yesterday.

I had CTDs before that and I continue having them!

No difference whatsoever.

Regards.

This is the first big test of my Starlink internet.  I was seeing downloads of 140Mbps from Microsoft, so It didn't take long - better than the two days it took me with my last internet provider!

Alrighty!

Starlink is from Elon Musk's SpaceX company.

Some pets are easily amused.

Elon Musk.  I have been seeing download speeds of 300MBs and no dropouts here in the UK.  Should have seen my face when I was seeing 140MBs downloading MSFS!

Guys, stopp running to new drivers that hit the market, this is shure not necessary for most people, can't understand that hipe with new released Nvidia drives , sorry !!

cheers 😉

A lot of this seems to be the "old-school" mindset where graphic driver updates did have noticeable improvements on things like framerate and stability, with people sometimes choosing specific older versions that gave the best results.

These days, if you glance at the driver update notes, you'll notice what's really going on with these updates.  They are adding more games to the "Optimize" feature, and they have specific updates to handle all sorts of crazy gaming hardware setups (various display technologies, etc).  When a hot new game releases, you can be sure a driver will come out that does something with RTX or DLSS for that specific game.

It's a leap of logic to think that they are bit-twiddling in C code to get you 22% more FPS in driver 1.2.123456 over 1.2.123457 in some edge case in MSFS2020.  Or that their quality control process just happened to miss that tiny case that is causing you to CTD.

It's possible, of course.  It's just highly unlikely a new minor version driver from NVidia is going to do that.

I'm still using the trusted 457.30, and I see no reason to change driver before I switching to a newer card.

471.68 and likely this one are actually improving the general landing light artifacts and complete malfunction of lights in one eye on HMDs (well, for me) introduced in some earlier version.  The issue is still there for strobes tho (weird).

Since the SU5 stability issues are very diverse, random and some apparently depending on time and location (and some of them are likely not related to SU5 at all), any generalized observations/impressions on something allegedly fixing them should likely be taken with several grains of salt, aspirin, several days of curing and some thorough re-testing. 😉
