Might help with some CTDs - Nvidia driver update

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Just wanted to share this one, in case it helps anyone who is getting CTDs after a Nvidia driver update;

I updated my Nvidia drivers to the latest version last week.  I immediately started to get lots of CTDs, at various phases of using MSFS.  I tried a few things, such as resetting all of the settings in the Nvidia Control Panel back to the Nvidia defaults, but nothing seemed to help.   I was even driven back to X-Plane for a couple of days!

Anyway, I contacted Zendesk and was advised to delete both the usercfg.opt file, and the flightsimulator.cfg file (both residing in the 'LocalCache' folder). Apparantly the [Display] settings in the flightsimulator.cfg file has some references to the specific GPU drivers that are being used.

So I deleted both files, booted up MSFS (which regenerated new versions), reset the settings in MSFS that had been put back to default (it wasn't all settings, just the graphics ones) and I literally have not had a CTD since!    I even went back into the usercfg file and made my preferred adjustments (eg. film grain off) and again, no issues.

So if you change GPU drivers and have problems, make a back up of both of these config files and then delete them. Sure worked miracles for me.

There's a new NVidia driver that just released today - 471.96. GL and fingers crossed...

Apart from CTDs, my MSFS was looking amazing on my PC.  I loaded GEForce Experience and there was indeed a new driver update.  I renamed the two files you suggested. MSFS started and informed me I had a 127Gb mandatory download.  That download failed and now it will not install.

Why do we keep doing this to ourselves!

I'm using the studio driver, very satisfied with results. 4.7168

Thanks for the info JYW. I'll include that tip on driver changes in the future.

no change regarding the (clr.dll related) crashes for me with the new drivers and after deleting the above mentioned files... ☹️

You don't have to re-dowload the 127Gb.
Browse to your installation folder when prompted and you'll be OK.

Or @MrBitstFlyer at the bottom of your old user config file you will find your installation path.  You can copy and paste this into your new user config file and all will be OK.

Been there done that etc. etc.

Guys, stopp running to new drivers that hit the market, this is shure not necessary for most people, can't understand that hipe with new released Nvidia drives , sorry !!

DONT delete your usercfg.opt file.

Open it then delete everything but leave the bottom line. ( if you installed onto your C drive then fine but you should not have done that anyway)

I don't change a driver that works well, ever.

I like to keep upto date, as with new cards they seem to be more focused on the newer cards at the moment 30xx, so I just like to keep updated. DDU first ofc.

Each to there own.🙂

Oh dear, I deleted and re-installed before I read this!  Thank you because if it happens again I know what to do 🙂

This is the first big test of my Starlink internet.  I was seeing downloads of 140Mbps from Microsoft, so It didn't take long - better than the two days it took me with my last internet provider!

Well... not a single menu click CTD since installing this one.   Would CTD in the menus every time at some point in the session with the previous two drivers.  Good stuff.
