METAR fears have been realized

Featured Replies

When a METAR reports 10SM, the vis is 10 in the sim lol.  This is a real bummer - I think XP had this issue for a while too.  Hopefully they can address this along with the many bugs introduced.

I'm not sure how it is outside USA, but 10SM here means unlimited visibility essentially.  I loaded at Palm Springs and the cinematic showed 35 miles (so they have the data it just needs work).

And this illustrates why this bug is a big deal.  10SM is rendering haze or fog (with colder temps), showing up as icing on my plane.

I remember this on X-Plane, yes, but I guess this is now happening just in the US. I don't fly in the US and don't see this. In Europe it's 9999 and it's not limiting visibility.

I trust that they'll get this ironed out assuming it is some sort of European developer/ European weather provider metoblue overlooking what 10 SM means in the U.S., but yeah, this isn't great.

The equivalent in metric is "9999"  e.g. "METAR SBPA 190200Z 13005KT 9999 BKN030 OVC060 18/15 Q1014=", which means that visibility is equal or greater than 9999 meters.

Afraid it is much like the perception of thunderstorm lightening and thunder.  I have checked several airports and haze/fog looks nice but is well overdone!

I believe automated weather stations are  limited to 10SM. So it's max in US

Right - which is the issue here.  Matt and I were quickly chatting on their Discord where someone had posted a nice picture of it - and I posted a pic of mine above.  He was mentioning how does a PC differentiate between 10SM as unlimited vs 10SM?

I'm not sure what the answer is but perhaps as a hotfix they could just make it unlimited...or read whatever the meteoblue area forecast data says.  (in this case there was SOME data, because PSP was showing like 35 miles).

That's only like 6ish statute miles though...  are you seeing that low of vis in your area?  Or is it correctly showing unlimited (or mostly unlimited)?

Can confirm METARs aren't working properly. Just did coastal flight and landing reported 900OVC ceiling (PIREP for OVC 900-1300 layer as well). Was scattered clouds instead. Major bummer.

You beat me to it, Ryan.  Was just going to post about this ...............

We're both from Minny and this so unrealistic for calm, clear, 26F conditions.  Summertime yes.  At least the metars were correct.  Maybe they could (should've) conditioned this haze based on the temp/moisture/winds instead of 1 size fits all.

Oh and I also hope they begin to adjust their AI tree algorithm's - there shouldn't be forests in the middle of farm fields.  Seems much better flying over Iowa.

Yeah I submitted a comprehensive bug report to Zendesk.  Matt said he'd mention it at least to the Wx team.

They did say this will be buggy yesterday, that this is indeed a new data and they haven't ironed everything out yet.

No doubt.  I am very happy that they're making the weather system a priority.

I am too.... the 10SM thing is kinda overlooked I'd say...especially to a dev who has no flight experience in this part of the world.

I'm limited in what I can say, but let's just say this caught me by surprise today.
