No clouds visible with EA volumetric clouds using P3D5.3

Featured Replies

i did fresh install of 5.3, not applied fix u talking about and i do not have such issues as shown on last picture. Of course i have too much haze for my taste but my view is closer to the photo next to last one. I use EA but no volumetric clouds.

Of course you don't see it, you neither have the fix AND you are using EA. In order for it to look like the bottom pic you need to have applied the fix and run without EA on and then switch on Active Sky and BANG, you're in the soup. I suspect that the fix has indeed fixed an issue Lockheed created somehow because it defintiely was broken and the fix has fixed the problem I was seeing although I think the haze should still be a little closer. But in doing so have either broken something else or have broken something with Active Sky and HiFi will need to fix it. Honestly though, I have no idea. The only thing I know for certain is that something was fixed and now something else is broken and one or both parties need to resolve it.

Yes but I'm not flying Concorde, just the humble PMDG737. I don't have Volumetric Clouds on. Just ASCA feeding standard clouds into 5.3.

What is the weather setting? Live, historic or a set profile?

Live. Don’t think it would make any difference if it was historic.

I think you will all see a new beta from HiFi very soon that will be compatible with the LM fix. It was released briefly yesterday afternoon but apparently had some sort of issue with simconnect I believe. So they withdrew it for repackaging the installer. Didn't sound like a big problem so I think we should see it soon.

Keep the faith,

If you happen to have downloaded v8023 you should uninstall it and redownload 8016. That is HiFi's direction. See https://forums.hifisimtech.com/threads/beta-8023-p3d5-3-incompatible-simconnect-message.14160/

Yes the "shader fix" did conflict with our earlier 8016 attempts that were posted near simultaneously (unintentionally of course).

We have a new build coming very soon, and the shader fix will be recommended, since it works better than our earlier "fix" attempts at working around the bug in the first place (which have been mostly reverted in the upcoming build).

I am not seeing any clouds when I switch on volumetric clouds. Not sure if this is a setting in ASP3D or maybe ASCA. I can recall that it worked in older versions of P3D.

Did you try loading the scenario and then going into the weather menu to manually add a random cloud layer? In 5.2 this is what I do before I launch AS because without this P3D won't show any clouds at all.

For what it's worth I just ran a test combining the LM shader fix with ASP3D Build 8005. The visibility is vastly improved and the ASP3D Maximum Visibility setting is working perfectly. I have an idea the upcoming build will work very well.

Active Sky v8024 has just been released by Hifi. Here is an extract from the revisions.rtf:

Open Beta Update – December 20, 2021

- [12/20/21] Fixes for AS Connector package/revision issues in previous build

- [12/19/21] Added automatic force of maximum upper visibility to 200sm when EA mode is on, or EA mode is changed to on during a session

- [12/19/21] Added automatic hide of visibility options that do not have effect when EA mode is ON

- [12/17/21] Reverted some previous 5.3.12-intended visibility changes, as the now-available P3D shader fix from LM is available to apply and does a better job and providing expected general visibility vs. ASP3D adjustments – This shader fix is expected to be available officially in the next P3D update/hotfix – See https://prepar3d.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=250756#p250756 to apply the fix yourself until it is provided in an update

- [12/17/21] Minor volumetric fog adjustments for better visuals

- [12/17/21] Removed max upper visibility slider option when in EA mode to avoid confusion and assist with better visuals in all EA mode conditions, forcing this internal setting to 200 miles when EA is active (changing option on the fly in simulator may result in unpredictable visibility behavior, and a restart of sim/ASP3D is recommended when changing modes)

- [12/17/21] Updated option descriptions and documentation to account for changed/missing options in recent updates

- [12/17/21] Adjusted legacy (non-volumetric) cloud theme load update process to avoid potential clear or thin clouds issue in some cases

- [12/15/21] P3D compatibility updates and tuning

- [12/12/21] Various adjustments and tuning to visibility, both upper and lower altitude, for better P3D 5.3 results in all cases and all graphics/depiction modes (EA/Volumetric Clouds)

- [12/12/21] Horizon distance adjustment options and relevant visibility depiction results tuned for better P3D 5.3 results (applies only to non-EA mode)

Testing it now and the haze soup problem seems fixed

The visibility problems has all been fixed now. Thanks HiFi 😃

I have not tried volumetric clouds again but I am very happy with the non EA solution now.
