Live weather down for beta users

Good grief, that video is from Sept. 2020, and the first public comment listed shows he/she updated his/her conclusion 24/2/2021 or February 24, 2021.

Over 17,000 views of misinformation about the weather in MSFS.

Go try it for yourself and get back to us.  REX can't do anything to improve this if the SDK hasn't given them the info.  The mis-information is on you if you can't prove otherwise.🧐

For a more recent overview by an experienced reviewer, have a look at

Is this video definitive? No, of course not, but opinions vary and they do so widely. We've had this particular discussion too many times on AVSIM and we keep going in circles. Calls for opening the SDK for 3PD weather are made without any knowledge of how the weather system actually works. Whether one particularly likes WF or not, it does serve as an existence proof that real-time weather can be injected into MSFS. Maybe there's a better way. Until someone can explain how all of this works, discussion of the weather system SDK seems fruitless.

BTW, those making claims about how a particular add-on harks back almost two decades to earlier software might want to post comparative videos as evidence. Hyperbole can be amusing and certainly it garners attention, but it isn't particularly illuminating. Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence/

Hope everyone has a safe and healthy 2022.

First off, the default weather in FS2020 does more than inject weather, it adds snow on the ground as well where reported.  Not only snow but accurate accumulation.  This hasn't been shared in the SDK yet as far as I know.  I've given proof and unless someone can provide a recent video showing otherwise this whole back and forth is mute.  The latest updates seen in the beta aren't even out for general use.  I know hands down REX can't do what's possible in the beta version of the weather engine.🧐  When the next update comes out later this month (if Asobo doesn't break anything) you'll see what's offered in REX can't compare by a long shot to what's happening now in FS2020.  That being said Asobo overhauled the weather engine (and broke it) back in November so I know the latest incarnation of the engine can't be fully realized by a third-party developer, it's too new.  So, anyone with common since can see what I'm getting at here.  REX to me is not a good alternative until Asobo releases everything that's needed in the SDK.

Yes, Rex can set the weather but it is limited. They are using a weather theme, which sets the weather to be the same everywhere throughout the world, based on the closest METAR. It is kind of like using the weather presets in MSFS

Hey I didn't link the year old outdated youtube video and ignore the author's 9 month old update. A year ago he was probably right, but things have changed dramatically with each Asobo update to MSFS so what was broken yesterday got fixed today. I'd be very hesitant to link a video more more than a week or two ago especially if a sim update occured in between. You went back a year thru several generations of MSFS updates.

Is this any different than what 3PD did in FSX, P3D, and XP11?

From what I can tell, Asobo has made it very clear that they have no interest, let alone plans, to open up the weather to outside developers. Likely they have legal reasons for this, given their relationships with weather data suppliers, proprietary reasons, and technical reasons, as they made certain architectural decisions early on in the development that I can appreciate are really not easy to change. So, these periodic calls for "Asobo must open up the SKD for weather" likely fall on deaf ears.

While it is not all working, I think the ingredients for a great weather system are there in MSFS and I think Asobo are committed to developing this aspect of the simulation. They seem to be taking the stance that weather is integral to simulation and they as the developer need to get it right. I like this approach, I fundamentally agree with it, and I want them to get it right. I think too this is likely one of the hardest if not the hardest thing to do so I am happy to give them time, as long as they continue to demonstrate they are making effort. I really, really, really do not want to have to go back to launching one or two other external programs in order to get weather. I want weather integrated. So, I will continue to point out where things are not working and what I think can be improved, keep trying to help Asobo get it right.

REX, from what I understand, is essentially hacking in to manipulate weather, which to me is far from a desired approach, either technically or the result you can achieve. So, I have chosen to avoid these programs.

In the case of ActiveSky yes. They use a completely different and far more complex method to inject weather in FSX/P3D that allows the depiction of actual storm systems, moving fronts etc.

Other 3PD programs like FSGRW and Opus do something similar, but they are not as full-featured as ActiveSky

What Rex does is comparable to the original default weather in FSX and the default “NOAA Weather” in X-Plane, where the closest METAR is used to set the same weather globally.

Well for my planned MSFS flight today perhaps I am better off without live weather.  St Louis → Minneapolis to take in the NHL Winter Classic outdoor hockey game at 6:00 pm Minnesota time (0000Z).

RW weather forecast is for a band of snow showers across northern Missouri, skies clearing between there and Minneapolis.  6:00 pm game-time outdoor forecast for Minneapolis is -4°F temp, -18° wind chill.  (-20°C and -28°C respectively).

Sure would be nice to be able to fly in and through that weather if one wanted to, though.

Dillon, with all due respect the early mention in this topic of REX WF was as a fall back today while MSFS default is down.  It is an alternative under those circumstances.

I won a copy of REX WeatherForce back in October 2020. Haven't installed it and don't intend to.
Asobo is doing an...adequate...job with their Live Weather. Why would I want or need a 3PD's adjunct to kill my frames just for candy?

I don't see Asobo ever releasing their weather SDK. They are partnered (for better or worse) with MeteoBlue and that partnership ain't going poof anytime soon.
Asobo's "Live Weather" or whatever one wants to call it, when it is working, is a world-beater.
