WX Radar PMDG 737

Featured Replies

Hi all,

what I haven't read or seen in the multiple videos or threads about the PMDG 737 is if the weather radar is somehow working in its current state. I saw an INOP sticker on the tilt up/down swith in one video. But I also saw a video where the WX radar was turned on on the nav display. But no weather/rain was shown on it, but it also was clear skies.

Best regards

Julian

We hope that the API will be released with SU10 in July.

Until then it will not work.

That was terrain display, not weather radar. Radar will have to wait for Asobo to complete the API so that aircraft written in WASM can access precipitation data from the sim’s weather system. That is slated to come with SU10 in July.

I know the videos with the terrain radar on. But there was definitely one video with WXR on the nav display. But due to at least clear skies nothing was displayed.

If the radar button on the display control panel is pressed, it might display the text symbology associated with radar, such as tilt, but there is no data to actually display precip (yet).

I don't doubt you.  But I'm curious...

Is the terrain drawn with a "sweep", just like radar would be?

Because I could swear I saw returns being drawn in a sweep pattern, but I suppose if could have been terrain, if in fact terrain draws that way on the 737's display.

Terrain radar is based on a database 😉

I hope the API that will come in the July 10 update will reflect more realistic rendering of precipitations because what's in the current gauge is not really looking like what we see in the real thing IMO... let's see how it looks like when it comes out...

We still haven't seen anything display weather on the PMDG 737, yet. I don't know what you're talking about when you say the current gauge is not really looking like the real thing.

WX radar is available in the default A320.  I still don't know why this can not be utilized while the SDK is still developing.  Yeah, I get it that it may not be 'real world' but would be more than adequate as a place holder.  This statement goes for the FBW add on also.

It's about coding language. There is no WX API for C++ aircraft (NG3), so it can't read weather data until Asobo make it available.

The terrain display is just a display, it's not a radar at all but reads from a database of world wide terrain data and matches that with the aircraft's position. The real aircraft draws it using the sweep just like PMDG do, but it's still a database. PMDG also use a database and don't scan anything.

The real EGPWS terrain display does “sweep” back and forth just like the radar does, but no actual radar is involved. Each “sweep” erases the display data that was there before, while laying down new data. It keeps the display less cluttered - especially when the aircraft is turning.

Speaking of the MSFS WX radar, in default aircraft, does it allow you to adjust the tilt? Can it *see* past obstacles and mountains? I never really got a chance to play around with it. Curious how "far" the simulation goes in this regard.

Yes I have known that for years.  My question was whether or not terrain is drawn in a "sweep" pattern.  And the answer I see is "yes".

I'd love to see WX radar in the sim. However, I have never seen a simmer who would deviate, offset, or go to alternate  due adverse weather painted on WX radar LOL Most of us like "oh look red spot we just go through that stuff" LOL
