Auto-update disabler program

Featured Replies

Hello,

We are home cockpit builders, we have some custom software that gets erased with every single update and it's tedious, so I just released this tool to disable them with one click:

This AIN'T A MOD! This does not modify the code of the game, this just adds an entry to the hosts file, which is completely legal to do, it would be the equivalent of disconnecting the internet cable while it's checking for updates.

If Microsoft or any dev of MSFS2020 consider it goes against the EULA or license, please let me know and I'll inmediately retire it.

Download here: https://github.com/maduranma/msfs2020-updates-disabler/releases/download/v1.0.0/msfs2020-updates-disabler.exe

Source code here: https://github.com/maduranma/msfs2020-updates-disabler

It requires to run as administrator in order to edit hosts file, as otherwise it couldn't be modified.

Interesting approach.

I'm sure that some people will appreciate the effort, but be justifiably apprehensive about running an executable with admin permissions, posted by a first-time poster on the forum.

Given that MSFS relies heavily on the relationship between synched version of the server and client software, I wonder what sort of issues it might cause with a superceded client contacting the updated server version.

Well, there's the source code too so anyone can compile it, also it's not my first time posting on GitHub simulation software, but first time for MS2020.

I guess old versions will run for some time until something changes dramatically, or they just refuse connection.

It's likely that by missing certain updates the sim will become more unreliable with every new update. One example might be the change in Azure voices, but weather or streaming scenery might become erratic too. Off course people will have forgotten by then they have tweaked the hostfile and blame Asobo for their issues.
The same thing is happening already with people who tried out Google maps instead of Bing and forgot to remove it completely.

Yeah, that might happen, but I just offer a solution for what some people ask, even if it can generate a problem in the future.

By the way, the program also Enables the updates if you click again, removing the line from the hosts file.

In my humble opinion, this will open up new issues. It is very dangerous to leave the sim not synchronized with the servers which may ultimately make the sim unreliable at some point.

Yes, but there's people who wants to avoid updating... It'll work until they restrict the version, maybe days, maybe weeks, maybe months... No issues at all, the moment they want to update again, just open my program and click "Enable updates".

Excellent. I might keep this on standby for SU10 as SU9 is too perfect to last.

People have said many times on here, they wish they did not have to do mandatory updates and they wish they could keep the version they have.

Well now they have an option to do just that. 👍

I don't think this will end well, but I do respect others wanting freedom as PCers and consumers from todays ironed fisted forceful software update practices.

Good luck!

this just adds an entry to the hosts file,

why not also list the required entry in the hosts file for those who prefer to edit it manually?

Man, it's open source, and it's in a constant in the main form file, it's not hidden haha

On GitHub anyone can browse the code, the app Is very simple and clever and reduce user error

But,

The big question Is, will a non updated msfs works?
