Ground level fps with Asobo PG cities deactivated.

Featured Replies

We start with no files deleted. Everything like Asobo wants it to be. We are at KMOD because the scenery is sparse but the town (Modesto, California) is an official photogrammetry Asobo city, in standard edition MSFS). I am locked V-Sync 30 fps in MSFS options. Raising altitude straight upward with Slew keys.

ground (80 ft ASL) 23.3 fps.

300 feet high: 25.8 fps

867 feet high: 29.9 fps

We see severe fps loss at ground level which goes away as we rise above sea level.

---------------------------

Next test we go to content manager and remove 8 photogrammetry files WU 1, 3, 4, 6,7,8, 9,and GOTY.

(You can't delete WU 2 (USA) and WU 5 (Nordics) photogrammetry)

Careful, these 8 files are only about 300 mb worth of files total. Make sure to type photogrammetry in the content manager search bar, and make sure the total being deleted is this small, about 300 Mbs (the entire WUs are many Gigabytes large, you probably don't want to delete all that, LOL.

==> Exit MSFS and reboot it up and the changes take effect.

Same everything here except those 8 missing files. Nothing about photogrammetry in Modesto, California was removed (it would have been in WU 2).

Ground level full 30.0 fps. Before we removed those files it was 23.3!

--

So when you read something from several members here that removing photogrammetry cities increases performance at ground level even far away from the PG areas, it is true to this extent. Which may or may not matter to you, because over a few hundred feet AGL and there is no performance difference.

Only delete 8 files, total 300.4 MIB (not 40 GB!).

Don't delete the whole WUs (40 GB).

What exactly do you think those photogrammetry citiy files contain?

Well, my take was a bit more radical... I disabled BING and PH completely from my MFS install, and will surely stay like that unless for playing gliders tasks with the need for proper VFR that MFS allows like no other sim I have used so far here in Portugal.

I am mostly using airliners with MFS ( or any other sim, because I don't really like small aircraft ), so, this is a good performance gain for sure.

But I have a question to the OP: When we delete PH for a given WU, what exactly remains from that WU ?

Flying gliders since 1980

The updated Airport layouts, the bespoke Airports, the updated DEM, the POI's, the landing challenges and the discovery flight.

Seriously, do you not know what World Updates consist of?

Oh well, I have a faint idea - I just have the Iberian Peninsula installed, rest of the World is default scenery only, now without Bing or PG. I'm fine that way - more than sufficient to please my needs in a desktop flightsim, provided FM and Weather are good enough, as well as systems modelling 🙂

Then why didn't you stick with X-Plane if the entire Online Data Component is of no interest to you?

I have no local cache enabled on my mediocre 2K monitor display.  Here's a picturesque airport in a Swiss alpine valley before and after one quick trip to Options. General, Data, Bing off and Bing on.

I seem to prefer Bing PG on myself, but that's just me.

Are you quite sure that PG (Photogrammetry) is? Because what you're showing in your screenshots doesn't have anything to do with Photogrammetry.

@Fielder

I appreciate what you are doing here because it can help some users get better performance.

However, you are not deleting PG cities, but you say "8" files from the content section. Can you please list the "8" files so that users are not confused?

If a user goes by the pic, they are going to delete 80 GIGS. That's a lot to have to re-download.

Thanks.

Actually the difference between the two images is Big Data On and Off.

I can confirm @Fielder's finding. In another test, I got an even wider difference. Miami Opa-locka KOPF on ground, empty Community folder empty except Shift+Z mod, 22 fps with PG Cities, 42 fps without PG cities.

This is a glaring bug. It was introduced in the 1st SU9 beta already. I and others reported it immediately on the official forum. It was marked "bug-logged". No fix until this day, and performance issues are "under investigation" several months later.

Here's the files to delete:

From looking inside the red ring I drew at the bottom, it is 300.4 Megabytes only for all 8, less than 1 gigabyte.

The 8 files are the ones you get when you type 'photogrammetry cities' into the search box of content manager like I typed in the red circle up at the top of content manager.

The 8 files are pg cities from WU 1, 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9. and GOTY. (It might actually be files from 8 folders, I paid no attention to what was being deleted. But it totals 300.4 Megabytes only as you see content manager reports at the bottom.

The content manager is 'touchy' about what order you tick the boxes for 'installed' , 'not installed', and when you type 'photogrammetry cities' in the search box. In other words, DJ Jose is correct that if you don't do the 'ticking' and 'typing' in one precise order, then Content Manager will display a huge number for the total amount to be deleted, lots and lots of gigabytes. But if you go back and do things in a slightly different order and wind up in exactly the same place, then it is only 300.4. I don't really know the correct order, I just mess around until it shows the 8 listings and a total of 300.4 Megabytes.

MFS is still very acceptable with default scenery and as I mentioned in another post I enable Bing an PG when using MFS for soaring task planning or debrief.

Most of the time I am using it to play with the airliners, pretending I am a captain on the cockpit so, nota much time to glance the scenery details unless it's an airport I know from RL...
