Is MSFS ATC smoking crack or am I doing something wrong?

Not always in the USA.  As you approach the runway you switch to tower on your own. Or ground will say "monitor tower" which means switch to tower but do not call ready - tower will call you.

Thanks. I know you’re a r/w controller so know your stuff. 👍

In RC it works out when you are at the half-way point from your parking position to the holding point. At that point you are told to either monitor or contact Tower.

If you are the next to depart it is contact. If there are other aircraft ahead of you it is monitor.

That is the universal RC ‘rule’ where the airport had separate Gnd and Twr frequencies.

There are already third party ATC programs for MSFS. Aren’t those enough?

Looks like you missed my point, Mr. Proudfoot. I was saying the folks working on the sim now are willing to think outside the box. They bought a freeware third party dev and now MSFS has the most advanced default G1000 for any sim. There's no reason why we should think they wouldn't give us an amazing default ATC just because of the past.

No, I didn’t miss your point at all. My reply was to your post that included this...

“The sim has its own marketplace and they're outsourcing a ton of work to 3pds and even buying some outright. I'd say expect the unexpected with Jorg at the helm.”

Did they explicitly state what aspects were being outsourced? If that list included ATC then fair enough. But you only mentioned the G1000 so perhaps they were being deliberately vague and non-commital.

They've used 3pds to make default planes, scenery, airports, points of interest and so on. That didn't happen with the ACES team so I'm saying anything is possible right now. If they don't want to fix ATC themselves, precedent shows they can always get someone else to do it.

Right, so you’re speculating. Thanks for clearing that up.

Yes, from the jump I said anything is possible. This was in response to you speculating that work won't progress on ATC based on the past.

I think this would also qualify as speculation, even implication.

So far on the feedbacks, all ATC related items are "Under investigation". And: "Improve AI Traffic at Airports and in the Air" has "Started". I think this sounds hopefull.

What does RC4 rules about ground and tower have to do with MSFS?  What does all this talk about RC4 and it's "rules" have to do with MSFS ATC?

Shouldn't we be discussing Real World vs MSFS?  How about we talk about FSHUD or PF3 which both work in MSFS compared to MSFS ATC?

Quite bluntly who cares what Rc4 does in P3D in an MSFS forum if it's not available or doesn't work in MSFS?

Isn't it ironic that someone who is being so vocal about MSFS ATC and comparing it to RC4 in P3D has already said they don't use MSFS, they see it once a month at their flightsim club and have no desire to bring it home, will continue to use P3D for "serious" flights, MSFS is for VFR only and all of their references are based on RC4. So why do they care so much?

In fact no matter what we say they aren't going to run out and use MSFS so I'm not sure why someone who has explicitly said (repeatedly) they can't use MSFS and have no desire to bring it home and try it is so concerned with MSFS ATC and is now calling out users for speculating when they have been speculating about MSFS this entire time as they don't even use it.

But "Time will tell" if their comments are speculating so I guess so it's ok for them to do it.  Remember that speculation that FSLabs?

Don't worry, I'm sure this thread "will run it's course" soon now anyway.

This is my last word on this. The rules for ATC are the same irrespective of the simulator in use. Given RC4 had the input of two real-world Air Traffic Controllers it’s not unreasonably to describe how things work for that program whether it is in P3D or X-Plane.

^^^^^ This

though I was excited when this sim was pending release as it promoted these items specifically, I have come to realize for full enjoyment I have had to payware:

  • aircraft
  • navigation data
  • ATC
  • airports

It's frustrating isn't it?  I was like sweet no more having 5 programs open every time I want to use flight sim...

Approaching Mt Everest, please Descend to 8000 to begin your approach.

1 minute later, please ascend to 35,000...
5 seconds later, you are 27,000 feet below your assigned altitude, please expedite your ascent.
2 seconds later, please descend to 10,000.

Yes, I had a session like that once when I first got MSFS, and turned off default ATC forever.
