I had no idea that the coffin would descend into the crypt, so that was a huge surprise! I was also taken aback when I noticed that there is a wall and doorway separating the forecourt from the very VIPs, choir and clergy. Those folks in the forecourt couldn't see anything!

Pity the BBC missed it by keeping on the lone piper. Did you mean Westminster Abbey or Windsor? They all see the procession as it passes them in and out.

I thought the lone piper walking down the hall was very poignant and an image that will stick in my head, but yeah it would have been cool seeing the complete descension. My coverage was the CBC so I imagine there was one feed that all the networks around the world used to put their own commentary to.

One thing I found impressive was how smoothly those Grenadiers handled that 660 lb. coffin.

Maybe there was a reason why they did that. They could have shown both on a split screen.

I assume you are talking about the partition between the body of the Chapel and the Altar area.

Interesting history. Very briefly, the partition is called the 'rood screen' and originally (medieval times) carried a cross. Its purpose was to separate the clergy and the Communion actions from the ordinary folk. This was later abandoned as contrary to biblical teaching. The screens have stayed in place in some places due to structural or other issues.

Perhaps it was requested by the RF not to be shown.

In the Orthodox churches, the clergy is  still completely separated by a wall when they celebrate the Mass

Can you imagine the stories the people who participated in the funeral march will be able to tell their children and grandchildren.

Especially, the Royal Sailors who pulled the gun carriage and the soldiers who handled the coffin. Their faces were there to be seen in sharp vivid color, worldwide.

Nice to see the Gurkha's had a prominent role.

Found the entire thing to be class.  While the lying in state and services were appropriate of her service it was the approach to Windsor and Windsor services which truly put it over the top for me.  The flowers adorned along the path was spectacular.  Not sure if anyone else saw but Emma her pony actually appeared to curtsy and bow at one point... The lone bagpiper really closed it out as well.  The entire week start to finish were fitting of a lifetime of service...

Not to get political but regardless of Harry's personal life/choices/decisions I do feel that first and foremost a veteran is a veteran regardless of being a royal when they have served their country and risked their lives in the military.   I would have like to have seen him in uniform throughout, not just at the vigil (just my personal opinion of course) regardless of his position within the Royal family.

Outside of that irking me this whole week as I said I found the entire thing to have exactly the pomp, precision and respect she deserved after a lifetime of service and devotion to her people.

Top class Brits, good show for your Queen!

Have a Wonderful Day

There is a video up that shows the complete descent into the crypt. This applies to both Westminster Abbeyh and Windsor. As for the "cheap seats" in the narthex, they had no view whatsoever of the actual proceedings due to the wall separating them. The "prime" seats in the transept could see most of the action, except for that which took place in the altar area.

I read today that those bearskin hats cost $64,000 each! Yikes. There was an experiment with making them from synthetics, but that was a dismal flop. The darn things weigh around 4 kilos! I can only imagine how heavy they get when wet...

I note also that the trumpeters are going to have their tabards re-embroidered since EIIR is no longer accurate. I suppose it will have to become CIIIPO, er I mean CIIIR of course! 😉

I've been to many Orthodox Churches so am familiar with the rood screen. However, Anglicans are about as far from Orthodox Church architecture and liturgy as it is possible to get. 😉

I got a real giggle when of the horses in the procession up the "Long Walk" slapped one of the bass drummers in the face with his tail! 😆

I also noted that young James Viscount of Severn was wearing two medals, the which struck me as a bit odd. They aren't for any military service but are closely akin to the US Military's practice of issuing "I was there" ribbons, except they are obviously available to anyone who happened to be breathing during the late Queen's Jubilees. One was to commemorate Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012, and the second was for her Platinum Jubilee earlier this year.

Huh? There was no descent into the crypt at Westminster, only Windsor. Perhaps it was a director’s decision not to show the full descent. I watched BBC but perhaps ITV did.

I don’t think any would complain. Just being present at such an historical event would suffice.

🤣 Yes, lots of work to do in that regard.

I’ll take your word over the cost. Yes, alternatives were tried but weren’t successful. I imagine they last a very long time so could remain cost effective.

Here’s an interesting fact I only became aware of yesterday. The Queen’s first Prime Minister - Winston Churchill - was born in 1874. Her last - Elizabeth Truss - was born in 1975.

One hundred and one years separate them! Wow! 😳
