30 seconds a day to prevent cancer?

Featured Replies

"Stepping outside during these times could cut the odds of developing cancer from a one-in-two chance to one-in-ten, making it a more effective inhibitor than any other single preventative measure."

(I'm not sure how good they work but they do make indoor NIR lamps too).

Apparently for outdoors, the key is 'morning'... that's when NIR happens.

Worth remembering that one study tells us little, Research has to be replicated, repeated many times and the same conclusions drawn.

What we do know is that walking is great exercise, especially if you can get close to 8000 steps per day. And of course we need that Vitamin D.

A 10 second morning walk to the mailbox and back sounds easier. Please somebody do a 10 second study now...

I was only grumbling to myself this morning about having to get up and walk the dog at 8am every day , it seems it might be worth the effort after all. It was a miserable morning to be outside today in the U.K. though .

Since our company moved location last April, I have been walking 1.5 miles to and from work almost every week day (except when there is heavy rainfall) at 7-7:30 AM, so I get more exercise now at the right time of the day. In addition, I have been taking calcium and Vitamin D tablets ever since I broke my left hip nearly three years ago, so that is another plus.

Definitely. The latest study, and this has been pretty much confirmed by many other studies, is that walking is very beneficial.

8,000 to 10,000 steps per day is associated with the most benefit according to a latest study but any walking is beneficial. 8000 steps is akin to about 5 or 6 kilometers, but obviously step size varies. I'm doing a bit less than that, but obviously the benefits are on a sliding scale, its not off or on. Any amount of walking is beneficial, especially if you can pick up the pace. You should aim for at least 30 minutes at a reasonable pace.

Yes the NHS recommend that all of us in the UK/British Isles take Vitamin D in the winter, and some vulnerable people in the summer too. In the winter  we just don't get enough sunlight to generate Vitamin D and our diets tend to not provide enough. I take D in the winter, but not in the summer.

Sunlight is strong in Guernsey by the coast, in the summer, so not required. Having said that, my daughter had blood work done, and despite being summer was rather low, not under the normal range, but lower than optimal. We spend so much time indoors working compared with in the past, that deficiency is possible.

Shouldn't be be over done though. Vitamin D can be toxic in excessive doses.

I've walked early in the morning for almost five years. Three to five miles. And during that time I've developed skin cancer and bladder cancer. Do you think my daily usage of Jack Daniel's has anything to do with it ?

I get no exercise anymore except walking from room to room in the house.  My arthritic feet and poor balance make it very uncomfortable.

I often wonder what will get me.  So far no serious health problems.  No cancers or coronary problems.  I see a cardiologist quarterly and he always says heart and lungs sound good.  And despite my affinity for red meat and butter and eggs my blood tests for annual my renal clinic visits show no cholesterol or kidney problems.  I see my primary care guy quarterly and he concurs with the cardiologist that my heart and lungs sound good.  Then he says, "See me again in three months."

I do suffer hand tremors.  But not so bad that I have a problem with a fork or a spoon like my brother did.

I think a great deal of our health and wellbeing has to with our genes.

So, I'm guessing it will be a sudden stroke or some sort of accident.

The tires are worn.  The shocks are shot.  The steering is wobbly.  But the engine still runs fine.

It does have an impact.

The fact your cholesterol is low is interesting. My LDL is a bit high but my HDL is high too, which offsets it. Triglycerides are a bit high though, but dropped a bit since I've been walking more since moving here. I have hypothyroidism of course, but not excessive. I need to loose some weight.

Remember the words of Paracelsus:

"All substances are poisons; there is none which is not a poison. The right
dose differentiates poison from a remedy ."

So, perhaps you just need to adjust the daily dose.

That doesn't sound good, Martin!  Just had mine done.  Total was 173, LDL (bad cholesterol) was nice and low 114, HDL (good cholesterol) was 1 point lower that what is considered normal and Blood Creatinine/Plasma and Potassium levels were in the middle between very good and high.  I'm good for another 10,000 miles. 👩‍⚕️<------- I have a very nice female Primary Care doctor who specializes in Geriatrics and is a teaching doctor At UCSF Medical Center.
