Here in the UK (50°-60°N) this comes up most years. It’s always those in the south that want to stay on summer time all year whereas those further north don’t. If the UK stayed on GMT all year the sun would set around 20:50 in June when many people are enjoying summer evenings. Staying on British Summer Time all year would mean it wouldn’t get light in Scotland until 09:00 in December and January. Hardly helpful to those working outdoors. At the latitude of Arizona the difference between day length in summer and winter isn’t that extreme so maybe there’s a case to abandon it. States further north may disagree. Ray (Cheshire, England). Noel That’s 11 hours of daylight. Sunrise here is 07:45, sunset 16:04 in around 15 mins but with the overcast and raining it’s a thoroughly miserable November day. 53° 21°N. November 21, 20223 yr Author Geez, Ray, I read your weather link. Your annual rainfall is over twice ours. The annual rainfall of 14.5 inches in Roswell means that it is wetter than most places in New Mexico. August is the rainiest month in Roswell with 7.6 days of rain, and February is the driest month with only 2.9 rainy days. There are 55.0 rainy days annually in Roswell, which is about average compared to other places in New Mexico. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.

Plus the effects of the Gulf Stream which keeps the climate very mild for the latitude. Average rainfall is 31” annually. Our driest year was 2018 with just 25” and that caused brown lawns and hosepipe bans. Your climate is extremely dry by comparison. Ray (Cheshire, England). November 23, 20223 yr Portland, Oregon. We're nearly through it, but today the sun rose at 7:20 AM and set at 4:32 PM. I'd way prefer 8:20-5:32. Yes, that would make sunsets really late in the summer, but I don't care, because I'm totally done with feeling like it's time for bed at 4.
November 23, 20223 yr Moderator Because of the quirks with the Earth’s 23.5° tilt the sun sets earliest around 10 days before the Winter Solstice but the latest it rises is in early January.
