December 29, 20223 yr Tonight is Gregory Peck night at Turner Classic Movies. And two great ones are playing back-to-back in prime time. 'On The Beach' which gave us a popular song of the time, 'Waltzing Matilda'. Followed by 'The Snows of Kilimanjaro'. I'll be enjoying both. I gotta make some popcorn before they start. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
December 29, 20223 yr Two excellent films. 'On the Beach' is as thought provoking now as it was when first shown. I read Neville Shute's book back in 1960 and I found it very scary. At that time the cold war was distinctly warm and the V bombers in the UK were practicing their 4 minute scrambles. We had bizarre public information fiims about protecting ourselves from nuclear blasts by closing the curtains and getting into a sheltered part of the house. Two years later in 1962 we had Cuba and everything in the book seemed even more real. Fortunately common sense prevailed. John B

Neville Shute is a fascinating character in his own right; a distinguished aero engineer and pilot, at one time deputy to Barnes Wallace.
January 1, 20233 yr We had drills in grade school where we would hide under our desks. I got in trouble for pointing out how silly it was. We were < 3 miles from what would have been ground zero in Baltimore.

We were < 3 miles from what would have been ground zero in Baltimore. The town where I lived in my early school days was in California next to a major military base. In the early 1950's we also had drills to hide under our desks. When we asked why we were doing that the answer was always the same...we were doing "earthquake drills." January 1, 20233 yr Oh yes Spencer Tracy and The Old Man and The Sea ! I need to watch that again. It's been years. And I just found out that Anthony Quinn did it in 1990. Hmmm... Edited January 1, 20233 yr by Penzoil3

January 1, 20233 yr We recorded and watched "The Great Sinner" with Peck and Greta Garbo. She sure was a looker! One beautiful, gracious and talented lady. Gregory Peck in "Twelve O'clock High " ranks IMO along with Gary Cooper in "High Noon" as my favorite movies of all time. "Shane" was one of the best as well. Especially when Alan Lad blast Jack Palance into the nether regions. I think Tex Ridder singing "Do Not Forsake Me" just added a touch of drama in "High Noon" that hasn't been matched. Vic green
January 1, 20233 yr Author I also like the spaghetti westerns with Clint Eastwood. Sergio Leone certainly knows how to pick and photograph some of the ugliest faces I've ever seen in a movie. Tonight one of our local stations is presenting The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly. Pretty long but is favorite. Another good Clint Eastwood movie is Pale Rider. Once when I was on home on leave my brother and I took my dad to see Paint Your Wagon. I love that movie. Clint Eastwood walking through the forest singing, "I Talk to the Leaves...." I never saw my dad laugh so hard. Noel The tires are worn. The shocks are shot. The steering is wobbly. But the engine still runs fine.
January 2, 20233 yr Yet another Peck movie... 5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel. Crystal Light VR.
January 2, 20233 yr Father Mapple. Many years later, 1998 TV version, Peck was now too old to play Captain Ahab, so instead he played Father Mapple. In both video versions and the book Father Mapple's sermon from the Church's high pulpit shouts the great theme that guides Ahab's passion. And Ahab was played by Patrick Stewart 5800X3D, RTX4070, 600 Watt, one or two 1440p 32" screens, 64 GB RAM, 4 TB PCle 3 NVMe, Warthog throttle, VKB NXT EVO stick, Honeycomb Alpha yoke, CH quad, 3 Logitech panels, 2 StreamDecks, Desktop Aviator Trim Panel.
