Is Frame Generation Good For MSFS?

Featured Replies

The actual is much lower.  The 4070TI is only 85 watts more than the 3060TI.

Also the cooling is greatly enhanced on the 4x cards hence the large size.

They're even larger than the 30 series cards?...don't want one fur sure then, lol.

Not all 3xxx series run cool.  My 3080ti runs on the hot side .... 70 to 76C during a typical sim session if I unlock frames.  Don't ask about Furmark heat.

By all reports I've seen the 4xxxx cards run cooler than my 3080ti.  Remember that a 4nm process AD102 is at the heart of the RTX4090.  I think that is why they don't generate as much heat.  Plus as was said all the 4090's I've seen are generally very large cards.  Lots of heat pipes and dissipation I suppose.

My 3090 used to run really hot, around 85C and going full blast.

My 4080 barely breaks a sweat at around 55-60C, fans just barely spinning, and my FPS is nearly double with TAA and Frame Generation on.

The 4080 cost about 25% less than the 3090 did new.

The cooler on my 4080 is the same as on the 4090 model of the same card, so it's running cool and quiet.
If it wasn't for MSFS, I would not have bothered upgrading. But I'm glad that I did. It's a whole new experience and feels extremely smooth.

I would be interested to hear from people who have tried the 4070 Ti with TAA and Frame Gen on.

320w (3080) vs 450w (4090).

450 watts in MSFS is NOT the average for a 4090, I have never seen that, but the limit of the card. this 280 watt is what I get typically, @ 4K with FrameGeneration ON, twice the memory and 1 GHz higher GPU clock than a RTX 3080:

"Sky_Pilot071 My understanding is that the 4x cards generate the same or less heat than the 3x ones."

absolutely correct! that's why Nvidia says you can keep your RTX 3080 power supply for the 4090.

I've enjoyed the waggling competition though, all good fun.

Err, yes, sure.  You go with that. 😉

Yes, I would definitely say so. I am using a 55" TV @ 60 Hz exclusively. nobody needs really more than constant 60 Hz for MSFS, just watch the official MSFS trailers: all 60 fps. TV and movies don't run higher than 60 Hz, and MSFS is (fortunately) no ego shooter, where you might  want more than that.

Hi,may I ask your settings both in MSFS and maybe Nvidia Control Panel to achieve that? Asking because I'm in the same boat: building up a new rig I9 13900K and 4090 with a 60 Hz 36'' TV not willing right now to buy a new fancy sync monitor.

thanks in advace

to achieve 60 fps with Nvidia FrameGeneration is trivial as it corresponds to only 30 fps non-FrameGenerated. I use only default LOD 100, most other sliders very high or Max. TAA anti-aliasing, 4K resolution. no traffic tools, mostly GA aircraft in less dense areas. In VR that's a whole different story, only ca.35-40 fps max. you are aware that the i9-13900K uses twice the power, gets hotter = requires more effort to cool and performs still ca. 10% below 7800X3D? for a pure gaming machine I would strongly suggest the 7800X3D instead.

That's exactly where my 3080 runs while gaming, albeit a few degrees cooler on average (50-55), but Playing BF2042 I've seen it spike at 60. I heard the 3090's can run warmer though.

I'm not likely to be building a new system before end of this year or even sometime in early 2024, so I'll see what the 5xx series might have on hand by then...or even perhaps AMD 🙂

Anyone know what the average performance in VR is like these days between the 4090's using Frame Generation VS the AMD platform?

depends on so many variables like resolution, scenery, VR headset etc. I am getting 35-40 fps max and it still feels surprisingly smooth : RTX 4090, i9-9900K @ 5 GHz, mostly general aviation in less dense areas. FrameGeneration is unfortunately NOT available in VR, that's the biggest bummer. so the otherwise biggest advantage of Nvidia vs. AMD GPUs doesn't exist in VR.

Oh ok, did not know that.

This makes AMD a bit more interesting to me considering that the 5xx series from Nvidia isnt expected for another 18-24 months I think.

I guess anything could happen between now and then though. It's not like I'm in a rush either so...

So if I am getting a 4090 my monitor needs to have some kind of Sync for Frame Generation? I have Samsung Odyssey G5 will it be enough?

absolutely not. the GPU will only refresh as fast as your monitor allows. you might be able to increase those graphics sliders in MSFS  if your FrameGenerated fps gets beyond your monitors refresh.
