Can my system run a 4090

Featured Replies

My motherboard is an ASUS Rog Maximus Hero XII WiFi. My CPU is an intel i9-10900. I have 32Gb of 5000 speed memory. My current GPU is an  Nvidia 3090 but I can't seem to find the answer to the question of whether my board supports an Nvidia 4090. I have the slots and case space. I have a high capacity power supply. But does my board support the device? Anyone know or can point to exactly where else to ask that question?

Case: (Lian Li PC-011 Dynamic XL), PSU: (MEG Ai300p pcie 5 & ATX 3.0), Motherboard: (ASUS TUF Gaming x670E-PLUS WIFI 6E), CPU: (AMD Ryzen 7 7800-X3D)

Memory: (G.Skill Trident Z5 NEO RGB Series 64GB DDR5 6000), GPU: (Zotac Gaming GeForce RTX 4090 AMP Extreme Airo). CPU Cooler: (ASUS ROG Strix LC RGB 360)

Fans: (7 Corsair LL Series 120mm RGB)

Issue isn't the PC or the Board it may be the Case length (4090 being 30.4 cm long and upwards). Using the PSU Cables you'll need 4 of them to the ATX 3.0 cable adapter connecter that's supplied with the GPU. Just check whether you have the extra cable/cables.

Yes, any modern PC with enough space and power will work with a 4090. With 1000 watts you will be fine. Just be aware that the Founder's Edition 4090 has a power connector that sticks out the side of the card and not the back, which may require more width in the case. Triple check your measurements before ordering a card to ensure if fits in your case.

1) I have the slots and case space.

2) I have a high capacity power supply.

3) But does my board support the device?

yes, since only 1) and 2) are critical. I had a 3090 that I replaced with a 4090, except for space in your pc case I see nothing that needs specific "support for the device", except cash. 😊

60-130 fps. no CPU overclocking.

very nice.

Your motherboard is the older PCIE 3.0 x 16

The RTX4090 is PCIE 4.0 x 16  - but is backwards compatible with older slower PCIE 3.0 x 16 motherboards.

Will it matter for MSFS 2020 ???

I have absolutely no idea.  The 4090 will be faster in a PCIE 4.0 motherboard but how much faster depends on what you are doing.

Here are some videos ...

If you have the case space and the power you’re all good.

IanR does 🤣 at least this year.  In two years he'll be clamoring for 200-300 fps.  Why?  Because it will be 2025 by then 😂

Yes, the 4090 is compatible with the Hero XII...the PCIe4.0 and PCIe3.0 pinouts are the same, and the GPU is backwards-compatible to the PCIe3.0 spec.

As others have mentioned, as long as it fits (my 4090 did not fit into a relatively huge Coolermaster HAF-X case) and the power supply is up to the job, it'll work.

One question, though--is your CPU really a 10900 and not a 10900K?  Not sure I'd overmatch a non-overclockable 10900 with a 4090--with the non-K version restricted to using the stock Intel boost clock scheduling (e.g. 3.9 GHz with all cores loaded), I have to wonder if the 10900 can keep the 4090 busy enough to gain much from the upgrade.

My mistake, it's a 10900K and it's overclocked to 5.1Ghz on all cores.

That’s the same CPU I have paired with a 4080, all good here.
