Recommend use DX11 or DX12 with dinosaur (old) computer

Featured Replies

Good morning everyone guys and for those who celebrate it I wish everyone a Happy Easter!
I wanted to ask you guys for help: having a somewhat dinosaur (old) compuer with i7 8700K, 64GB Ram, Nvidia GTX 1070 8GB what do you recommend: use DX11 or DX12 as graphics use, I'm not very expert in PC and MSFS even if the my computer is a bit prehistoric, it runs quite well but I had this doubt, and if you are also kind enough to advise me which AI to use like: AIG, FSTL, or Just Flight FS traffic based on the PC I have available! Really thanks to Everyone, and I really look forward to your welcome response!
Best wishes to all and a good weekend and greetings from Lake of Como!

To be precise, excuse me, the processor is an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-8700K CPU @ 3.70GHz 3.70 GHz.
Excuse me! Thanks a lot again!
Alessio.

Wow!  That isn't a Dinosaur; that's a Trilobite!

I bet it can still run MSFS though.

Rob (but call me Bob or Rob, I don't mind).

I like to trick airline passengers into thinking I have my own swimming pool in my back yard by painting a large blue rectangle on my patio.

Hello mate! 3930k with rtx2070 here.

Yeah, MSFS 2020 runs rather nicely with my 32” 1440p monitor in DX12 with DLSS.

I feel kinda guilty when I read about people complaining of low frame rates with a 4090😃

What screen resolution?

If a 1080 screen 60 hz, like mine, set fps to half screen refresh, 30 hz.

Hi Guys, first of all thank you all for the replies, you are always very kind, my monitor is a Samsung TV 50 inch series 7, I have to use the pc on this which is the TV at home because I don't have a monitor dedicated to the pc! I think that my GTX 1070 is a bit tight but guys unfortunately for now I can't afford a more powerful card! It seems to me that it runs quite well, but not being an expert I was asking you if with a system like this and with my old GTX it was better to run below DX11 or DX12! Thank you very much to all!!!

Alessio

Until recently, I used a 1070 and, honestly, couldn't tell much difference between DX11 and DX12 with my personal graphics settings.

Processor: Intel i9-13900KF 5.8GHz 24-Core, Graphics Processor: Nvidia RTX 4090 24GB GDDR6, System Memory: 64GB High Performance DDR5 SDRAM 5600MHz, Operating System: Windows 11 Home Edition, Motherboard: Gigabyte Z790 Aorus Elite AX, LGA 1700, CPU Cooling: Corsair H100i Elite 240mm Liquid Cooling, RGB and LCD Display, Chassis Fans: Corsair Low Decibel, Addressable RGB Fans, Power Supply: Corsair HX1000i Fully Modular Ultra-Low-Noise Platinum ATX 1000 Watt, Primary Storage: 2TB Samsung Gen 4 NVMe SSD, Secondary Storage: 1TB Samsung Gen 4 NVMe SSD, VR Headset: Meta Quest 2, Primary Display: SONY 4K Bravia 75-inch, 2nd Display: SONY 4K Bravia 43-inch, 3rd Display: Vizio 28-inch, 1920x1080. Controller: Xbox Controller attached to PC via USB.

DX12 is technically still a work in progress. AFAIK it causes excessive VRAM usage and there are bugs with ground textures popping through taxiways and runways. I guess YMMV, but with older hardware I don't see much benefit with going to DX12. Stick with DX11.

I have a similar hardware as Alessio (just a GTX1070ti) and I only use the DX11 mode. If I remember correctly, DX12 was creating a few visual issues, and performance was not greater at all.

Not being a smart azz, but I say try both and see which works best for your system.  I have a fairly powerful system and dx11 works better for me.  Dx12 gives me major fps drops when panning and on approach.
